DAWN ist ein 6,14 m langes und 0,44 cm breites Boot, inspiriert von Seekajaks, Surfskis und Rennkajaks. Das abgeschottete Vor- und Achterschiff machen das Boot unsinkbar und bieten Sicherheit im Falle einer Kenterung.
Alltagstauglicher als ein Rennkajak, schneller als ein Seekajak und komfortabler als ein Surfski.
Das Unterschiff wurde mithilfe von nummerischer Strömungssimulation für Fahrten auf flachen Gewässern wie Seen und Flüssen optimiert. Dabei galt es die perfekte Kombination aus Geschwindigkeit und Kippstabilität zu finden. Ergebnis der Studien ist ein Rundspant, der im hinteren Bereich abflacht und zu mehr Stabilität bei rauen Bedingungen führt.
Der Bau:
1. Die Bauweise ist die sogenannte Leistenbauweise. Bei der Leistenbauweise wird zunächst ein Gerippe aufgestellt, das einem die Form des Bootes vorgibt. An die Mallen werden, zunächst provisorisch, die Holzleisten aneinandergeklebt und an die Mallen getackert.
2. Nach dem Aneinanderkleben werden die Tacker wieder entfernt und der Rumpf bzw. das Deck geschliffen. Zunächst grob und dann feiner mit immer feinerem Schleifpapier. Nach diesem Schritt erhält man eine schöne glatte Oberfläche und ist bereit für das Laminieren.
3. Sowohl Rumpf als auch das Deck werden mit Glasfasern und Epoxidharz laminiert, das Ergebnis ist eine Leichte, extrem stabile und langlebige Konstruktion.
4. Als Finish und zum UV-Schutz wird zu guter Letzt das Boot lackiert. Dieser Schritt holt optisch auch nochmal alles aus der bisher reingesteckten Arbeit heraus und macht das Boot zu einem absoluten Blickfang auf dem Wasser.
Warum Holz?
- Kajaks aus Holz sind um ein Vielfaches steifer als Boote aus glasfaserverstärktem Kunststoff - ja, sogar steifer als Carbon Boote.
- Holzboote sind sehr leicht. Wer sein Boot öfters zum Steg trägt oder es auf das Autodach hebt, wird dies zu schätzen wissen. Hinzu kommt, dass leichte Boote besser beschleunigen und ein agileres Fahrverhalten vorweisen.
- Das Holz ist dank Glasfaser-/ Carbonlaminat und Epoxydharz konserviert und erfordert keinerlei Mehraufwand bezüglich der Pflege als Kunststoffboote.

DAWN is a 6,14 m long and 0,44 cm wide boat, inspired by sea kayaks, surskis and racing kayaks and mainly designed for calm waters such as lakes. The sealed-off fore- and aftship makes the boat unsinkable and provide more security in case of capsizing.
More practical than a racing kayak, faster than a sea kayak and more comfortable than a surfski.
The hull has been optimized using numerical flow simulation (computational fluid dynamics) for calm waters such as lakes and rivers. The goal was to find the perfect combination between speed and tipping stability. The result of the studies is a circular frame, which flattens at the back and leads to more stability in rough waters.
Construction:
Besides the hydrodynamic aspects, the hull and deck should be easy to build. Complex shapes should be avoided and clean lines should be the main focus. The design is such that it can be easily built by amateur craftsmen.
1. the construction method is the so-called strip construction method. In the strip construction method, molds are first set up to give one the shape of the boat.
Wooden strips are glued together, provisionally at first, and stapled to the hulls.
2. after gluing together, the staplers are removed and the hull and deck is sanded. First roughly and then finer with finer and finer sandpaper. After this step you get a nice smooth surface and you are ready for laminating.
3. both hull and deck are laminated with fiberglass and epoxy, the result is a lightweight, extremely strong and durable construction.
4. as a finish and for UV protection, the boat is varnished. This step brings out the best of the work done so far and makes the boat an absolute eye-catcher on the water.
Why Wood?
Wooden kayaks are much stiffer than boats made of fibre reinforced plastic - even stiffer than carbon boats.
Wooden kayaks are very light. Anyone who has to take his boat to the pier or has to lift it on the roof of his car will appreciate a lightweigt kayak. In addition, light kayaks accelerate quicker and have a more agile performance.
The wood is conserved by the fibreglass and epoxy resin. Therefore it does not require any extra effort for maintenance compared to plastic kayaks.

The use of the plane is interesting you remove the flatness of the strip and you now have the flatness of the width of the plane. You did accomplish removing the drag glue. This in no Way fairs the boat. There must be a certain amount of satisfaction.

Das Holz ist Western Red Cedar.
@@deusdelightedkayaks Mit welchen Kosten muss man für das Holz in der Menge ca rechnen? Und was wäre deine Alternative für ein heimisches Holz für so ein Projekt?
@@barneystingson4063 Ich habe ca. 320 m Holz verbraucht, mit etwas Verschnitt sollte man eher um die 350 m benötigen. Western Red Cedar würde in der Menge ca. 1500 € kosten. Alternativ könnte man Fichte/Tanne nehmen. Die Kosten würden dann bei etwa 1000 € liegen. Zu beachten wäre bei dieser Wahl, dass das Boot dadurch allerdings schwerer wird.
Das ist ganz gewiss die edlere Alternative zum einfachen Plastiktorpedo. Wundervolles Design !
