Stitch & Glue Kayak | New Concept Model
Vložit

- I challenged myself to design a wooden kayak. This is a 'proof' model for my custom stitch & glue kayak so that I could test the geometry and think through the fabrication. I have always felt drawn to cedar strip canoes and kayaks but they tend to be a bit busy visually and can be fairly complicated to get right. Stitch and glue kayaks, on the other hand, can look too simplistic, but they fairly straightforward to build. I hoped to balance the ease of fabrication with the beauty of cedar strip construction.

Very nice! I’m looking forward to the full size version.
Wow, thank you! That means a lot to me coming from such a respected designer/builder!
Brian Oltrogge I would not have thought of the pre-cut strips because I would be too worried about the tolerances working out at full-size, but I bet it will work great. It is a cool innovation.
Yes, me too!
Wow, high praise coming from you Nick! I've loved your build series and hope to eventually build one myself. I do think there is something to this approach that Brian has done, especially if he can figure out an effective way to do the stitch and glue method without needing to do any stitching. It would make for a beautiful craft.
@@Grunblau do you have facebook
Absolutely beautiful! and I'm happy to see you're making videos again :)
nice to see you here :D
Now there's a name I've missed seeing in my notifications. Welcome back Brian, great to see you again. I hope all is well in the Oltrogge camp.
Having now watched the video; Wow, that is a beautiful looking design. This is what it looks like when both function *and* form are both done right 👌
I had forgotten how much I've missed you videos. The level of engineering, precision, dedication and forward planning that go into each of your projects is nothing short of brilliant. Keep posting whenever you can Brian, we'll be watching 😀👍
Thanks! This means a lot!
Hey Brian!!! Super happy to see the notification pop up in my feed! Are you still making the CNC tables?
Good to see you again Brian 🙂 beautiful work 👍 hope to see you more often 😎
Excellent use of CAD. Cardboard Aided Design.
Lol
And suddenly 2020 seems a little less crappy.
Nah, still kinda crappy... :)
@@Grunblau More vids, then, please. You've got a lot of 2020 crappiness to compensate for.
Brian, anything you put out will make 2020 better.
One of the few good things to come out of 2020
Brian, your are a gift from God. Hope that you know the vast numbers of people that learn from your videos, your sober an eficient way of talking and working. Every tool you use may be to many of your vwiers the first time thay see it and what a priviledge to be presented by you.
Oh maaaannnn!!! Missed you a lot!
Now I'm once again going through all your library rewatching everything! Thank you so much for posting!!!
It’s really nice to have you back! This was a fantastic start to a fantastic project. Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder!
I'm so happy to see you back at it! I know life has not worked out the way you thought, but you're still forging ahead with new designs and ideas. Great to see you again Brian.
I generally unsubscribe from stations that don't output a new video for years.
I'm so glad I didn't unsub from this one.
Thanks Brian!
Thanks!
This was totally awesome. I am OVERJOYED to see you posting a video after the hiatus, looking forward to the next one and can't wait to see the finished product!!!
YES! I always get nervous when channels I really like stop posting! Glad youre alive and well and making videos!
Absolutely beautiful. Not sure how this came to be recommended to me, but I'm so glad it did. 18 hypnotic minutes.
WOW! what a thing of beauty, I can't wait to see the full size version.
Thanks Brian! Looks like you’re having fun.
Hes back!! I've been waiting for this for forever! THE best aluminum casting channel on CZcams!
Yup, need to dust off the foundry...
@@Grunblau I've watched nearly every aluminum melting channel and video on CZcams, (seriously, the good ones anyway), and your foundry and process are unmatched. Are you doing more leather and aluminum casting videos or are you changing the direction of the channel toward something like woodworking? I'd be fine with either honestly because I love your top notch attention to detail!
I’ll continue to do various projects including aluminum, leather work, etc... I have a few casting projects in the queue as well. Never really had a direction, still basically interested in the same stuff!
I’ve been waiting for this day....for a long time.
Hope you and your family are well Brian.
me to
Doing okay thanks! Stay safe.
That is amazing! I love the model and all of the attention to detail that went in it. I can't wait to see the full-scale version.
So glad to see you back designing, building and making videos!!
So nice to see you active again.
Watched during a short work break, and during a meeting afterwards, it occurred to me that your video is proof that quality > quantity. As someone else said, thank you. I really appreciate you taking the time to document your efforts here, and to share your techniques. You didn't have to do that, but you did, and the world truly is better off for it. Whatever the signal:noise ratio of youtube was, it's a little better now. Thank you very much.
Three years ago, this is the video that made me subscribe. I don’t know if you’re still planning on the full sized model, but you should put a small motor on this guy to drive it around in a pond.
Thanks! This was the last video that got meaningful views for my channel…. Shortly after, CZcams also broke out in a rash of Kayaks and Canoes from various YT makers.
I bought all of the wood and cut the full scale buck. I still need to buy about $450 worth of epoxy and fiberglass.
Going from a self supporting channel where I could budget for tools and materials to barely able to document my own projects I pay for out of my own pocket made it so I had to reprioritize my projects based on what I could actually afford from time and money.
I still intend to do the full size version although I used the epoxy and fiberglass for the Koi Pond that got 18K views. I am considering producing a limited run of Kayak kits to help pay for the full scale version.
I don’t agree with the changes CZcams has made that punishes longer format content from older channels. I think they have gone overboard with commercials and I would rather not do videos for products if I can help it. It is an unfortunate situation that will hopefully resolve itself soon as I know many CZcamsrs are struggling to continue their channel.
I am making content whether anyone will ever see it or not. I am also focusing on developing a prefab building, while balancing a job and taking on uninteresting fabrication work to pay the bills.
Sorry for being so long…
@@Grunblau I have a similar problem with funds towards my own kayak project so I know what you mean. YT is getting really out of hand. I wish there was a better platform, but I know that there aren’t as many views on other platforms. Keep working hard, I’ll keep doing what I can do for you on my end, and I’ll definitely keep an eye out for possible kits.
Happy to see you back!!
Been waiting a long time Sir ! Thank You!!!
Yeah, me too!
He's alive! Alive!! Welcome back!
Love this so much!! Can't wait to see the full scale version.
So good to have you back!
Even though it’s a proof of concept, your model is a gorgeous piece of art! Can’t wait for the full scale build. I’m glad you have returned!!
Thanks!
Pretty amazing work man. Glad CZcams decided to recommend this to me.
Very nice!
Gratitude for sharing the experience!
Good to see you back.
Damn 3 years welcome back
You need to be selling this as a kit. It is absolutely beautiful and i would buy one on the spot. Think about it.
Ear to ear grin. Excellent!!! Bravo Sir!!! Bravo!
I have been waiting 3yrs for this video. Thank you and you didn’t disappoint. You are one of the reason I post to YT and Instagram. Thank for the inspiration and please don’t make me wait 3 more!!
When we see someone execute something with great skill, they have the peculiarity of making us believe that it could be simple until we see the whole process in detail, then we come to the conclusion that only gifted people have achieved it. You have the gift of perfection and extreme skill.
Absolutely gorgeous! I’d love to see some cad files available as I’d love to build one myself
So good to see your work again. Beautiful. Thank you.
Very good to have you back sir.
This is why you have notifications turned on
Welcome back!
Same, I been waitin' forever, and it's great to see another vid.
And the little bell! 😄
This is why i never take away subscriptions that seem inactive: All of a sudden a gem appears!
That is the way I am too... I have only ever unsubscribed from people that put out too much content. If you post a video every Tuesday and Thursday, I know I can check back anytime. If you publish once a month, I’m going to need a notification.

Beautiful design and model. Can’t wait to follow the full size project as it comes together!
He’s back!!!!!!
Just finished watching. Incredible! So worth the wait Brian!
Your design / build skills are so impressive. Thanks for being such an inspiration to so many of us to put our minds and hands to work!
Holy Cow I was waiting for 3 years for a new movie. where have you been man?!
Will the pattern be available anywhere after you've made your full size one? I love everything about this.
Simply gorgeous. So well done !! Super !! Wonderful!! Thanks for sharing!!
That is a gorgeous piece of work, and a great first video back. Glad to see your return!
You should produce a model kit of that for people to buy.
That is what I was thinking. I would buy and build that kit. The end result was gorgeous. Seriously, please consider selling the model.
I’d buy the plans just to build the model itself. Very cool.
@@brenttate9299 I looked all over that website and cannot find the plans for this kit. Could you provide the link to the page on that site that has them?
I am finishing up the drawings for the kit now so they are not available yet... seems like Brent may have been spamming his own website as my plans are not available through his link. Hope this helps!
@@Grunblau hi Brian. Sounds like Brent is a bit angry.
I am in no rush and can wait for the plans.
Yeah. He wasn’t wrong, I should have had plans, etc... ready to go before I posted the video. He posted his link awhile ago and I left it until he started making people believe that my plans were available there. Seemed kinda salty when I deleted his post, lol...
Awsome - seeing this video triggers the wish to go deeper in projects like this...
A veritable work of art and skill
When may we see the real thing and buy patterns and instructions?
What the what!
And his long awaited return does NOT disappoint!
Can't wait to see the full size version 👍👍👍👍
BRILLIANT JOB
No way. Pinch me or Slap me. Out of nowhere Brian Oltrogge drops a video. Hopefully we'll get some more videos. Please make videos for youtube again. Please comeback. The maker community needs you.
Good to see you're still around, always interesting to see what you do.
Very well done. Beautiful.
Wow!! What a piece! Great work!
You are a brilliant, brilliant man and an absolute master craftsman, and it is such a joy to watch your videos. It was so nice seeing new videos pop up from your channel! Thank you for sharing your mind with us!

I have watched every single thing you have made over the years. This is a beauty. I love your brain.
Thanks! This is one of my favorite channels, I hope you can continue to upload content.
Stunning. Well done Brian.
You're back! And what a project, too. She turned out lovely. Can't wait to see more.
the model is awesome. Can't wait for the full size build.
Having seen all of your videos more than once, I can honestly say I was starving for a new one, and wow this was an exceptional piece of work. And came at the best time possible with this whole covid19 conundrum we're all miserably locked into. I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos, and have learned so much, its truly inspirational, and educational. Thank you so much for sharing.

Your use of the blue tape and pins is new to me, thanks! Great video
