Fire is a beast in this game. I remember one time I had a fortress that fell to a fire-breather, but I think it was a titan rather than a forgotten beast. So, I'd been finding desiccated dwarf corpses all over the place for several months, but I could never find the vampire. I finally lucked out and had a witness able to identify which dwarf was the vampire, so I isolated him and had him standing on a tall pillar of earth, surrounded by deep pits, so he couldn't go anywhere. I'd set up a ballista and was going to have a public execution. I gathered all my dwarves outside, preparing for the occasion, and just then the titan appeared. It was a gigantic emerald feathered hummingbird with the trunk of an elephant. It gyrated while it flew, and had fiery breath. It immediately started blasting fire down the hillside at my gathered dwarves, killing most of them instantly. I tried to fight it off, but ended up losing everyone. Well, everyone except the vampire. He was safe on his little island, able to avoid the fire and the marauding titan. The irony was palpable.
The music was so loud at the start I was waiting for a joke like Krug asking the dwarves to quiet it down as they are playing their music too loud and then the sound just drops

Some of my favorite forgotten beasts yet, and that elaborate setup with queen bee being dunked in water at just the right moment was incredible
I wish I had the art skills to draw Queen Bee, on fire, with a manic grin on her face, falling backwards with arms outstretched while she matrix-dodges a ballista arrow
When messing with water I consider it always worth it to build a swimming pool first and teach the dwarves a bit of swimming. Lost to many dwarves dodging into water. Loved the ballista kill!

Yes!
If you have DFHack, you can used the Makeown command to turn the gorlak into a citizen. I know you've expressed in the past you arent much for modding or cheating, but DF was made as a story generator and if the game itself is hindering or stopping fun story aspects from happening due to its limitations or unimplemented then I don't think anyone would see fault in circumventing it that way to create story aspects or more interesting an satisfying scenarios.

You're a great storyteller. Your medium is not as important as your skill, though Dwarf Fortress has to be one of the greatest engines for unexpected stories you can get. You could say the medium and the teller compliment each other really well. That's why we keep watching, it's good stuff.
Clever use of game mechanics¹ on top of great storytelling. Yeah, you've been doing this for 7.5 years, and it is all "the same DF" but you still find ways to make it fresh. That is, I think, why we keep on coming back to this channel. Keep up the great job, Krugg. 🍻

I see it like paint vs. a painting. A painter can make a thousand different paintings with the same exact colors of paint, but no two paintings will be exactly the same and each has a different message. Dwarf Fortress is "the medium" but your stories and doodles are the content. Great looks on those forgotten beasts, by the way - I love how you pull off that combination of playful/humorous and grotesque/scary so well!
I have to say, this episode right here, with "dousing chambers", fortification tubes. for ballistas, complex waterways.. peak Dwarf Fortress right there.

You're a gem of a human being. You make very beautiful content and if one pays deeper attention apart from the story and gameplay, one gets to learn even more complicated mechanics. Such as the king trap video or the fortress in the middle of the ocean where you tried to trap a giant sea creature. Thanks Kruggsmash!

Seeing those waterfalls come alive was amazing. Managing water in DF is always a little tricky, and a little scary so it was really nice to see everything work right from the beginning.
well i for one have introduced you too another viewer. my 3.5 year old grandson. i showed him spearcavern a week or so ago. i have other grandkids, but i fiugured he would take to it, and he surely did. i tend not to watch anything when im looking after them, rather do things with em, so this was a bit of an exception. well, he loved it. got a little bit scared by the demon, but every time i said 'lets do something else' he said okay but then wanted to watch more after. oh yeah, i've been watchng your stuff for years. its not boring or "the same" at all. you are a great story teller, and the two of you make a great illustration team. keep up the good work!

So many beasts! Yes! And I love the hall of monuments to what has died. So many good parts to this. Love the dogs everywhere, love the poor unlucky sheep, love the fortress improvements. This was so great!

Glad to see you got hooked on the steam version :). Knew from your initial thoughts before release you would be a good measure how this version stacks up to the original DF. I think they did an excellent job with the visuals. It really feels lights years compared to whats available for DF visual wise. Such a shame Gorak passed away. Saw another person play and had a gentle Ogre roam their fortress, which was later kiled by human visitors. Wonder if there is a way to put entities under the fortress protection. So visiters and fort inhabitants know they arent allowed to kill them, Like how visitors know not to kill dwarfs for no reason. Feels like something that should be part of the game.

Man, I played a lot of Dwarf Fortress while sick in October and I obviously barely scratched the surface seeing as Krugg is making works of art with floodgates and water...as well as ways to extinguish his Dwarfs or get them away from Forgotten Beast. Looking forward to the next episode already!

Personally I like having a sort of 'control room' place, and if there's an urgent need to pull one on demand, I would lock someone inside so they do it the moment I ask them to, rather than 'whenever you feel like it'.
Also helps having said control room adjacent to the great hall, so there's plenty who can go do it when its not that time sensitive.

To carve out a skyscraper from dirt/stone by leveling the whole map around it! You'd start at the top of the skyscraper...

How is it that every episode is so epic?! The evil from the hell-spawned whip is seeping into Boggy and causing him to be in a bad mood which, in turn, will make him enter his villain arc!
I think the series should end in finally fighting Rofa in series of duels to the death with each individual dwarf until one wins or Rofa kills them all. VENGEANCE FOR THE SHEEP!!
Addition: if the series does not end in some unplanned way earlier :P

seeing the water constantly slosh in that chamber you filled, i know that is a big cause of lag in some forts but i wonder if a bit of "surface tension" would fix that. just give the water sim a tweak where if all the water surrounding is only one less depth then instead of randomly choosing a square to move to it will preference staying next to walls and other squares of water of the same depth.

Most other games you probably wouldn't be able to pull seven years of content creation out of. With Dwarf Fortress? You could tell stories forever. You're the best Kruggsmash, don't even try to deny it.
I loved it! And the pacing was great. Just as my inner fighting dwarf started itching to see some combat a new year brings plenty of challenges!

I'd never have had the guts to dunk queen bee into water like that, that was badass. Nice episode :) Religion's always a mood killer for dwarves, in my fort at the mo I have an all elvish crossbow squad and the leader got stranded in the caves for ages and lost use of his hands. I love that elf, but they just got more and more miserable. I ended up taking him out of the military and making him a performer at his god's temple, we'll have to see how he does
