- No matter how much you know about lawn care it's all too easy to make any one of these lawn care mistakes throughout the season. I've made some of them before as have every other lawn care professional out there.
I actually presented 22 different mistakes people make in their lawns in this video but I have also asked viewers to submit extra mistakes through the comment system.

Active subscriber here. I've been following your channel religiously for the past year or two and must say that this is by far the most helpful I personally have viewed. I can basically take all of the points you make here and by simply 'inverting' them (i.e. 'Lawn Care Best Practices') and maybe slightly rearranging the order, I've essentially got a complete full-season guide to the best practices to observe for maintaining a healthy lawn. Superb job!
FOOTNOTE: I can personally attest to the first point you make - namely not to dethatch/scarify too early. I did that with my SunJoe in early April this year here in north Jersey, and my lawn is taking much longer than usual to really get going.

My biggest mistake has been not observing the signs my lawn is telling me. Another video for you Brian…signs your lawn may be trying to tell you. I believe it was one of your videos that talked about when you see signs of mushrooms in your lawn it’s mostly lightly due to over watering which is my biggest mistake. I will be more cognizant of it this spring. Another mistake is not applying preventive fungicide.
Also, as a lawn care novice, thanks for educating me on so many lawn issues from understanding thatch buildup to choosing the right fertilizer for your lawn.

Always love hearing from you Thurston and thank you for the comments. In most situations mushrooms look a little weird or bad in a lawn but they are frequently a sign that you have beneficial fungal activity underground. The mushroom we see is kind of like the flower on a plant, it's just the tip of the iceberg. I'm usually pleased when I see mushrooms although I don't want my one year old popping them into her mouth either. Later this season I have a mushroom video on my "want to make a video on this topic" list. We'll see if I can get to it.

YES!!! That should have been first on the list! What's the point of having a lawn if you don't take time to enjoy sitting in it and playing in it with your family! Right now my kids are having grapes on a picnic in my lawn in their jackets. That's the reason my lawn is important!

I went back to some of your past videos on early spring lawn care and decided not to reseed this spring based on your information. I think it will pose challenges. I’m going to move forward with a granular pre-emergent (Barricade) and reply on a fertilizer to thicken up my lawn.

Common mistake #145: pushing your spreader with one hand and accidentally dumping everything on the grass!
Side note, I'd be interested in seeing a mini series on getting a soil test and methods to fix the results.

Thanks for the great video! I have a dilemma!!! I hear and understand your point about not dethatching before growth is happening… but what if I’m planning to put down pre-emergent this spring?
In my case, temps are still below 50 F, but I have travel coming up and need to be ready to put out the prodiamine soon. I aerated and dethatched this last weekend to get ready (since I can’t do this after pre-E). What’s the right way to do this combo?
in a perfect world you would core aerate at about 40-45 degrees just before growth, then run a surface level power rake with a sunjoe style dethatcher (don't dig deep) around 50 degrees when you have green up and sluggish growth, then you could put PE down after growth starts at 55 degrees. Then I think best course of action for a deep dethatch is later in the Spring but before summer or in the early fall, Late May may give you a touch of weed pressure in summer but it's an option and Sept 1 is great too especially if you do fall overseeding. Most spreading grass types will be fine with only a single deep dethatch per year...or even every other year. There is no 100% correct option btw, there is usually a way to make everything work good enough which makes it all fun.

Thanks a bunch, you should be fine applying Azoxystrobin the active ingredient in disease ex on new grass, just follow application instructions on your bag and you should be fine. I've never done it before but I wouldn't worry about it if it were me.
Thanks Brian. Great vid. What do you think about applying prodiamine, in Spring, after a full lawn renovation in fall (KBG/PRG). The reno took very well and I want to build momentum this Spring. Is root pruning actually something to worry about? Thanks and keep up the good work.
Thanks for that, always nice to hear. As for your question I know RK just touched on root pruning recently and yes it's a possibility but I wouldn't worry too much. PR is more hardy than other grasses after it's rooted for a couple months. Kbg usually puts on root development over top growth as it establishes which is one reason why it appears to mature so slow after seeding. Unless you seeded near Halloween or later I think you'd be fine to throw down PE especially if you did it a bit late 60-65 degree soil temps and used a dithiopyr product instead of prodiamine for the added post emergent effect. Spring is the strongest rooting time for grass naturally so if you let your grass wake up and start growing (and rooting) into April then put a PE a bit late I'd be surprised if yiu had any problems.

yeah, around labor day I'd not change anything then. I overseeded a small pad by my garden about 10 days prior to labor day and am going to apply prodiamine to it in a few weeks. Up to you what to do but I wouldn't worry if it was me.
Question...I have a neighbor who's lawn is straight up Po Annual. Most years I can keep it out of my beautiful Bermuda (I live in GA). This year I could not and his Po has totally infected one side of my lawn. I was given advice from a nursery to use a spray on product by Mirage that kills Po and Sedge. I sprayed it lightly and watered it in, Po anna laughed at it. They advised me to spray in again heavier. Reluctantly I did. Now as of 4/25 it looks like my Bermuda is dead and the Po Anna is still laughing. Will my Bermuda make a come back this season? I have fertilized. I know Bermuda is Alpha and pretty kick ass but am I doomed for the year? Thanks for any help/advice.
Hi Brian, you recently did a video which included some commentary on an organic weed killer that could be applied effectively when soil temps are still low. It was a hose end spray product. Which product was that pls?
My "kill winter weeds" video from December I demonstrated the use of iron hedta spray bottle using Natria, and my "lawn looked bad last year" video from last week I used iron hedta through hose end sprayer with a Moss Out product. Iron hedta applied in daytime when temps get to at least 50 can enter weed leaf tissues even when overnight temps drop below freezing. The kill may be slow and some weeds more resistant but the chemical sprays need much warmer temps to work.

Would overseeing first then applying a pre emergent about a month later be okay?
Too early, rye is the only grass that can get pre-emergent applied after 1.5 months but not all kinds of pe. Other cool season types go up from 2.5 months and beyond. I would say pre-emergent applied to 1.5 month old perennial rye would only work in a situation where the seed bed was perfectly prepared and the plant germinated and grew very well out of the gate. I've never actually tried it though, just know what I read from labels.
It would help to know what part of the country you are talking about.
What is a “top dressing”. Just new soil to fill those holes? Or is it like humate or compost or something? I’m new to lawns lol
It's kind of a broad term that usually refers to soil amendments, things that are hard to incorporate into the soil and aren't usually directly used by plants but do help improve soils over time. Compost, sand, biochar, peat moss, worm castings, azomite, could be leveling material or even top soil of a different consistency. Lots of obscure soil amendments are available.
@@TurfMechanic ok thanks. I didn’t have my soul aerated this spring because I heard that’s a great spot for weeds to grow lol. I put down step 1 from IFA (it’s popular in Utah) which has a pre emergent along with Humate down. Maybe like two weeks ago. I just ordered a soil temp probe. Excited to watch more of your content. You said water more, less often, how would you go about figuring that out?
Your specific location should be getting 4-inches of water monthly by rain in the Spring, if it's not then you need to add a bit. By summer you may need to add more to get up closer to 6 inches of rain depending on how humid your environment is. Best way to tell is to install a rain guage.. for places that get little rain you are in full control, I like to shoot for one watering session every 7-10 days in the Spring or fall and once every 3-4 days in summer but I live in a dry climate with low humidity. Whatever your irrigation practices have been just rule of thumb irrigate less often and for longer stretches.instead of three times a week for 30 min, do it two times a week for 45 min...instead of weekly for an hour try every 10 days for 1:20. Higher volumes of water will saturate deeper and encourage deeper rooting resulting in more drought tolerance. Eventually you may even be able to water less frequently and start shrinking the duration especially if you use water retention products to limit evaporative loss. This question is worthy of a 20 min video and I may just put it out late in April if I find the time. Thanks for the comment, I just wish I could answer it easily.

It took me 4 rounds of roundup to kill off part of my lawn I was renovating last year lol.
4 rounds!? Ouch, that's painful lol. Funny how much effort goes into killing it off when people think of it as a simple process. I've got a project lawn to kill this spring, hopefully I can get it done in just two rounds. 🤞
