  • Are you planning on Leveling your Lawn? Watch this first.
    In this video I cover 7 common mistakes beginners make when leveling their lawns. This is not a how to level lawn lawn video but more of a what not to do when leveling your lawn video.
    The secret to a perfect looking lawn is having it LEVEL.
    Is your entire lawn or areas of the lawn filled with dips, ruts, low spots, and high spots? When your lawn isn’t level it can lose its once-pristine look, and lead to damage and accidents due to the craters making you twist your ankles and scalp your lawn with your mower. Good thing is, you can level your lawn yourself with your own leveling materials such as sand vs soil .
    A level lawn also leads to a healthier and easier to maintain lawn. Not only does it result in a better quality cut, because your mower won’t scalp the lawn. Not to mention, mowing over a bumpy surface is uncomfortable. Low spots are of particular concern because as the tires pass over them, the level of the mower blade also drops, plunging it into the higher spots and cutting the grass too low in that spot. The last advantage to a level lawn is drainage. Holes and low spots tend to collect water in pools, which increases chance of lawn fungus.
    Basic equipment needed to level your lawn: lawn leveling rake or lawn leveler or lawn lute or lawn level drag or any other kind of lawn level tool . Also you will definitely need a gorilla cart to haul around the thousands of pounds of material. The most important tool is the lawn leveling rake, I will link below for the one I used for my lawn. This rake is used by golf courses to level their courses. It removes stones, breaks up small clumps, and creates a super smooth surface. It does a much better job at final leveling than just a landscape rake or push broom.

    I have been in the landscape industry for over 30 years. And this guy is the best description of how it’s done. This is how you do it. I can not begin to tell you how many homeowners argue with me the second I say the best method is with a fine sand. Many people think I have no idea what I’m doing as soon as I say sand. Sand also gives your lawn better drainage. If your concern about nutrients add compost after it is level. A thin layer it will break down and feed the lawn.

      Same here. I’m the second owner of a house that is just over 2 years old. The soil is hard clay and doesn’t appear to have had much in way of top soil put down. This year was just prepping the soil for grass. My lawn is essentially a decent front yard where they sodded. The rest was a mess of weeds and garbage crab grass that I’ve slowly been weeding out. Next season will be the start of the leveling process.

    Thank you for the video. I hope to start leveling my yard in the next couple of weeks, but it's a daunting task. I'm currently mowing over 5 acres of our property, somewhere around 250,000 square feet. I'm heading to the lumber store tomorrow to buy 8 foot long 4x4s to make a large version of a leveling rake that I can attach to the 3 point hitch on my tractor. We built the house in 2006 in the middle of a sloped hay field and the lawn gets bumpier every year; after watching your video now I know it's the organic material in the soil breaking down.

    Great video! Thank you. I'm starting the leveling process this year. It's going to take several years since my entire lot is sloped front to back. I need to do a little terracing along with to even be able to level! Also low spots in a slow draining lawn can be mosquito breeding areas. I found that out last year when we had rain, rain, rain. BTW, it's in red clay soil.

      @PrincessCutLawnCare  Před 3 lety +2

I have two areas where trees were cut and stump grinded years ago and the lawn has sunk where the remains of the stump have decomposed beneath the surface. I hope you're talking about a beach in some river or other fresh water body!
      Sand from the beach (sea) with it's very high salt content, won't be friendly to your lawn, at all! ;-)
      BTW it's soil, not dirt. What most don't realize is that soil, compost, etc. is basically organic material that will feed the microorganisms in the soil.
      As such it will be consumed making the level return to it's previous condition! That's the reason why people using vast amounts of compost in their gardens. Don't see much change in the general height, even (or specially) after years of application. Otherwise it would pile up quite a lot, which it doesn't. ;-)

    Let’s see, mistakes I made last year: 1.) Went with the wrong grit size 2.) Didn’t prefertilize the lawn 3.) Didn’t allow the sand to fully dry 4.) Did not use enough sand (which might have been a blessing) 5.)WRONG TIME OF THE YEAR (applied too late as my lawn was heading into winter dormancy). Also, didn’t have a levelawn, just used garden broom and rake. This year I will do better! Great short reference video!

      We have voles out here and those things are ridiculous, I ended up getting some of the solar powered vibrating spikes that you put into the ground and from what I can see there have not been any of those little rodents around I guess they can’t tolerate the sound from the vibrating of the stick every minute.
      They absolutely destroyed my lawn but we live in Utah and the area where we are at 6 to 10 inches below the surface once you get through the topsoil is beach sand because millions of years ago it used to be the edge of the ocean and the great Salt Lake. When we moved here I didn’t know but I need to rent a skid steer to move stuff around in the yard and I was blown away after I got through the topsoil it was basically play sand so no wonder those little rodents have the best time ever but not at my house anymore. Those spikes drove them out. Amazon. They were called Thenos. I really think they worked.
