I Tested 3 Lawn Leveling Rakes (One of Them was Hilariously Bad)

  • Do YOU plan on Leveling your Lawn???
In this video we test out some of the most popular Lawn Leveling Rakes on the market.
The 3 contenders are the Ryan Knorr Level Lawn , The R & R Products Lawn Leveler and The Rassenrakel. A few months ago I tested the cheapest Lawn Leveling Rake on Amazon but this time we are trying out some of the most premium leveling rakes on the market currently just in time for lawn renovation season.
The Ryan Knorr Lawn Level is made by Landzie and features a 36in wide level lawn head and a 72in handle. They claim it is powered coated but as you will see in the video it is very clearly not. This was by far the worst quality rake out of the 3 rakes we tested. It feels cheap, flimsy and does not handle smoothly in the lawn. The poor build quality, loose handle and unknown place of origin make it a hard pass especially for its price tag.
The second rake we tested was the R & R products rake. We contacted R & R directly to find out where their lawn leveler was made and they told us the head was made in America and their handle was “imported”. There are many things we love about this rake including the galvanized solid steel head which is heavy and very durable. Another awesome feature about this lawn lute is the handle. It features an extra long handle that makes long deep passes possible when leveling which can cut down the amount of work involved and lead to a much more flat lawn.
The last lawn leveling rake we tested was the German made Rassenrakel. This leveling Rake is the Mercedes Benz of Lawn Leveling Rakes. It is made from high quality stainless steel and features an interchangeable head system that allows you to adapt any handle you prefer to use such as fiberglass, wood, telescoping etc. The head of this rake is 32in but features a much deeper head than I’ve ever seen a leveling rake have which ultimately makes it a much more smooth experience when stroking in back and forth. Rakes that are extra wide tend to chatter back and forth when leveling but this lawn leveling rake eliminates the chatter with its strategic design.

Why are so many Ryan fans bashing this guy? What exactly bad or inaccurate did this guy do or say that made them all so defensive? It was a good review and comparison, he showed you usage and genuine issues related to the flimsy side of it and sub standard paint on it, nothing made up but factual. This is his honest and fair opinion and in non instance is he attacking Ryan knorr; he’s solely talking about the product and he has his right to his own evaluation. I’m surprised Ryan has chimed in in a non existent topic, take the feed back and make a better product next time around, just like all manufacturers do. Good and fair comparative video mate and stay positive and keep them coming; in no way do Ryan knorr and Conor ward hold a monopoly on lawn care and control the market or public opinion.

Funny how "Rasenrakel" is pronounced in USA 😅 If you take a closer look, you'll see that it's made of one solid sheet of metal with edges gently bent (so actually no edges at all). That is why it glides so easily in spite of its weight and that is why it makes little to no damage to the grass blades when top dressing. The open top is there to collect the larger pieces of wood (when using compost etc.) which otherwise stay "floating" on the grass, but it's useless when using pure sand. You can fill it with silicone if you always use just sand, but it's actually a usefull feature.

My dad and I put an in-ground sprinkler system at my grandma's house and leveled the dirt back as much as we could with regular rakes since she gave us a pretty tight budget to work with. I could use the rake to finally level it out correctly and stop scalping sections of the yard from the ruts.

I'm a Chicago ex-pat now in Austria and watch your channel, Ryan Knorr and Lawn Whisper for informative tips. Picked up my first lawn leveling rake for this fall lawn renovation season after trying to get by with other garden tools.
I did look at the Rassenrakel but a knock against it was, at least here, it doesn't come with a handle. Which at €169 was a negative. Did pick up German made "Happy Green" rake which was 20 euros cheaper and comes with a two part wooden handle. What was appreciated is that the screw together wooden handle has a metal sleeve that extends well past the joint so it is well supported.
Was surprised to hear about the handle issues of the Ryan rake. Credit to him though is that is an issue he recognizes with the rake and is offering everyone who owns the rake a replacement single piece metal handle.
I do appreciate having the openings facing up on the rake itself, catches loose material like stones and sticks and makes it easy to toss to the side.
Enjoy your channel and a touch of the hometown.

I spent 2020 watching lawn care/renovation videos. Got a lot of great information from videos like these (watching yourself, Ryan Knorr, Connor Ward, Allyn Haynes, Ginga the Lawn Ninja, to name a few.) I went out and got the Sun Joe dethatcher. I got the Tenacity. I got the top shelf seed from Seed Superstore. Rented a professional aerator. I was planning on a Spring seeding, but temperatures were all over the place. On one Sunday it hit a record high. The following Sunday? Snow! Then near 100F since. Pushed seeding off until this fall. Sprayed 1st round of Glyphosate last week, then 2 days later, the city enacts watering restrictions. My seed isn't down yet, so I can't get the exemption. I was planning on making a DIY lawn level tool, but this would really up my game. Crossing my fingers...I really need a win!

I bought a Rasenrakel based on this review and your comments. I have used it for some spot leveling and it is indeed easy to use; to steal your word, buttery. It arrived really quickly (via FedEx) and nicely boxed. I did email the company with a question and they replied quickly (considering the time zone difference) and were very pleasant and helpful. The rake does get material in the channels but it’s not that big of a deal. I just turn it over to dump it and then hose it off. All in all I am very happy with it. And many thanks for your review, George.

I did notice that the one from Amazon worked much better on my lawn. My grass was a bit too long to smoothly rake sand/soil in, so they both got stuck and flipped upwards while pulling them towards myself. although, still my Amazon one performed better. This review was so timely. I will be leveling my lawn soon because I'm tired of rolling my ankle in the depressions all over my yard. My self propelled lawn mower bounces along like it's on a gravel road. I have a lot of beautiful hybrid Bermuda grass that has been invaded by sand burrs, Bahiagrass, Crabgrass, and Dallis Grass that I'm getting under control with pre-emergent and post emergent herbicides and as soon as that's done I will be leveling. I have about 9,000 square feet of lawn so a leveling rake will be a must.

Nice quick comparison George. I was happy to see that you asked the manufacturers where they were made as that was my comment on your cheapest rake video. Allyn Hane talked about the country of origin in his sprayer video as well and gave a shout out to American manufacturers to reach out to him with an alternative to China manufacturing all the sprayer components. I enjoy both of your content so I hope Ryan can get past a bad review and look at it more as an opportunity to make his product better because that’s what an entrepreneur would do but I do see where it might sting a little more being called “hilariously bad.” Anyways good stuff and look forward to both of your next videos.

I have a bunch of leveling to do, lawn has been neglected for a couple of years as I got sidetracked with things and when it arrived last week I opened it right up. I have to say I am impressed. I was debating just buying a 36 inch rake at Lowes but said for the extra $70 I will give the leveling rake a chance. I am happy I picked it up. It seems solid, feels solid and seems to work ok. The real test will be when I get in the 5 yards of top soil and really put it to the test.

I bought Ryan Knorr 's rake since I was able to get it for $99. I've used it for 12 yards of top soil, so I've definitely put it to good use. I also dislike that the debris can collect at the top (but I understand how it can be useful) -- it just gets more debris on pavement when you aren't worried about collecting pebbles etc. during a big lawn reno. Secondly, the only thing I really can't stand is how it flips up/down. It has happened too often and then I have to take a landscape rake to spread the dirt out more (this is just more time consuming in my opinion). Overall it definitely helps and gets the job done. Like any product, it could use a few improvements but it was a good investment and has saved me a lot of time.

However i like how r & r adapted the head to be solid for commercial golf coarse maintenance where they are using clean screened material just as we do.
And i totally agree about the manufacturing issue but apparently it makes me culturally insensitive to even mention it..

Even when you buy topdressing it has larger pieces in it so if the channels do that then that's a bonus rather than a negative. But what do I know. I’ve been looking at leveling takes. Think I’ll go with the R&R (unless I can get that free one lol). I just recently purchased a new home and have about 4 acres of grass that I mow and it has a lot of holes, ruts, and hard compacted areas that collect water. I’ve been trying to figure out how I want to tackle this large of an area. And I think it’s going to be a combination of dragging a weighted pallet for an overall leveling and then breaking it up into small sections and using a leveling rake. My reason for leveling is primarily the bumpy ride, I’ve already started filling in the holes as I hit them with the mower. Secondary will be the more uniform looking lawn. As always thanks for an informative video, I was looking at leveling rakes on Amazon and none of them were really confidence inspiring so I haven’t pulled the trigger. I have so much work to do on my yard! It's hard to mow since it's so lumpy. The wiggly mower lines make it look like I was drunk when I mowed! Even the cheap leveler would help me out. Nice video, by the way. :)

Great reviews George. The Rassenrakel looks like a nice contender in this space. I love my R&R Products and the Standard Golf rakes but if I were shopping for a new one the Rassenrakel would be worth a looking at. It's very "German"; built like a tank. Having some weight in a leveling rake is super important. Allows it to do a lot of the work when you're moving the material around. 😎

I bought the Ryan Knorr leveling rake last summer too and should've returned it right away but I didn't. I found that it flipped over all the time and was basically unusable on my lawn. They suggested swapping the handle out but not sure how that was going to fix the problem. I think they finally admitted that it wasn't meant for the average turf and probably only good for the really short turf. Frustrating. Nothing against Ryan. Just the rake.

@@PrincessCutLawnCare Thanks for the suggestion. I forgot to mention that I bought my first lawn leveller from Level Lawn Canada. The build quality is crap. Just a bunch of spot welds on metal that you can bend with your hand. The metal is half the gauge of the Ryan Knorr (RK) rake. Surprisingly, it worked better than the RK rake. Likely because it wasn’t as wide. My project is probably a month away. Still lots of snow on the ground in Winnipeg!

Our front yard has a decent slope to it and we’ve been planning on leveling it with the hopes that it’ll be a little easier to mow afterwards.

open slots on top catch debris, the one i have works perfect and is helpful when you dont get the best screened material. I forget who makes it but its solid and heavy lol. Handle is also made of solid wood

Disappointed in Ryan he's now saying it's a personal attack on him yet it's named the Ryan Knor leveling rake... George never takes it personal he shows you the facts and now the product has been pulled down for changes to the product. Ryan is blaming mass production failure, so for $150 he's trying to say it was designed to be cost effective... the better quaility is a couple of bucks more.....so what Ryan we pay 150 and get crap and should be ok with it......
So many people have complained on Reddit and on CZcams to Ryan over the quality and it's now the blame game... blame George blame mass production and blame others ... Ryan your names on the product not George... ..so saying your personally attacked is BS... you sold out to a company who uses China for production you never checked the rake after production and now another CZcamsr shows it's flaws he's pissed.

I was just about to order the RK rake, as I am a fan of his channel and work...glad I caught your video before I purchased. I just trenched in irrigation this past weekend, plans to bring loam in to level 3500 sq/ft this coming holiday weekend. I'll likely go for the R&R 36" model unless I'm lucky enough to win the RK. Thanks for the review, nicely done.
