How to Top Dress and Level Your Lawn with Soil

  • Leveling your lawn on a slope is a great idea for getting a smooth surface on your Bermuda grass lawn. For homeowners with a sloped front yard, the lawn care tips I share in this video will help you level your lawn using a leveling rake. There are a few subtle techniques with the leveling rake that will help you get a great result. The method is slightly different to how you would use a leveling rake to top dress a flat lawn. When leveling a slope, it's important to use the weight of the rake to do most of the work. The lawn leveling tips I share will help you get a great result.
While I usually use sand to level my lawn, this video is different in that I'll be using a purely organic mixture to top dress the lawn. I'm going with CarbonizPN from Mirimichi Green this time.
A lawn leveling rake is a very important tool for getting the best possible result when you top dressing your lawn. While there are other types of rakes, using a lawn leveling rake will save a lot of time during the lawn top dressing process. It allows you to quickly move the top dressing mixture around while simultaneously working it into the turf.
I also share a few bonus tips that will help minimize run off from rain after leveling your sloped lawn.

Great tips Ron. I will be doing my first lawn leveling sometime this season. Was hoping to squeeze it in for Spring but if not then definitely in Fall. I am going with a sand/peat mixture of 70/30 . The sod farm that I got my sod and seed from sells it by the sack delivered . 70% mason sand / 30% Dakota Peat that they mix and sack for you. I already have the exact same leveling rake so will be all set when I do it. Like the Carboniz PN for future use though

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  Před 3 lety +1

Very nice Striperman. Your lawn already looks really good. With a top dress and leveling job it will be pool table smooth. Really won't take very much. a 70/30 sand and peat mix sounds great. Especially attractive if you can get it already mixed.

Awesome Job!! 2 questions,1. I have just under 6,000 square feet of lawn I'd like to Topdress soon, how much material (bulk) should I order? 2. How much would the Tru Cut reel mower that you have cost me brand new?

When using this leveling method and you have areas that are much lower than the high points in your lawn. should these areas be over seeded, or should I just allow the grass below the covering to work their way through. I agree with your Frankie. Really the product is best used when mixed with sand. I went 100% CarbonizPN because I'm trying to help beginners get into top dressing. If I tell them they're going to have to mix this stuff with sand, it'll push some people away. It's a great way to improve your soil quality. Once they see how green it turns their lawns, they'll want to come back with with a full 70/30 or 100% sand top dress. Just tried to make it as simple and accessible as possible. I put it down fairly heavy obviously. 800 lbs over 2000 square feet is quite a bit. Will be interesting to see how the lawn looks. Thanks for watching sir. 🙏😎

i know golf courses do the sand topdressing, but it holds no nutrients and it can never hold nutrients. I'm wondering how this will affect the grass long term? I can see the benefits for drainage, but to me it doesn't make sense as you'd need to spend a fortune to then fertilize and provide nutrients to the soil. I take out 2" cores every year and replace with a screened topsoil from my local garden center and it does a great job. I'm on clay soil, and it was pretty bad, but taking out those plugs, adding them to my compost, and replacing with good soil made a huge difference. Hi Robert. Yep. Going 100% organic will have you leveling the area again. Probably the best compromise is to use a combination of sand and soil. 70/ 30 mix is the best of both worlds. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Thanks for watching sir.

Ron, I like using a 50/50 blend of the a PGA approved sand and high quality soil conditioner such as what you used in this video. My question is which option provides the best results on a slightly sloped lawn, as you have just done or the 50/50 blend?

If your goal is to level, you’ll want sand in the blend.

I have an approx 2’ wide indent that is approx 4-6 inches lower than the rest of my lawn due to in ground drainage pipe from my back yard running out of my front yard. Any tips for dealing with that? Fescue mix lawn in Northern California. Thanks!

Heya Brian. Yep. Great a mix of 50% sand and 50% compost and fill the low spot. Be sure to step on it to compact it in after filling it. You may have to do a bit of touch up after it settles, but that should correct most of the problem. Mow your Fescue tall so that there's still grass exposed once you do the repair job. Appreciate you watching.

AFA lawn airation, first, call DigSafe, then just put a 1" Irwin Speedbor bit into your drill (with an extension so you don't have to bend over as much) and drill a hole every 6-8" (or 8-10") throughout your lawn 6-8 deep (the depth of the bit to where it goes into the extension is fine as a depth gauge...).
Just remember, DigSafe only finds electrical cables, not oil, gas or water lines....

    Hi Ron,
I just had an irrigation system installed in the Austin area - clay soils and hybrid bermuda. Any recommendations on how to fill up the trenches to help my lawn get back to normal? At $60 a bag, it would be very expensive to cover all the trenches

I would use fill dirt to fill the trenches and then top dress with a light coat of CarbonizPN to encourage the grass to fill in faster.

What are your thoughts on using one of those water filled lawn rollers before doing this leveling process. Waste of time? Would it help to “push” down any high spots beforehand?

Hi Todd/Jill. I've never used one personally but all the videos I've seen of them look pretty cool. They look like a good way to get fairly even coverage and save time too. I don't think it would replace a leveling rake for smoothing out low spots but as a way to evenly distribute peat moss or compost over a lawn, they look great.
