Steam Machine Music

- Steam Machine Music is a homebuilt mechanical instrument made mostly from vintage Meccano parts. The instrument is driven by a steam engine that provides the whole instrument with energy. The sound material is generated using two music boxes that are programmable with perforated paper strips, a small Zither - a stringed instrument played with Meccano pulley wheels thus generating continuous drones instead of the normal plucking of the strings. Furthermore a dynamo that generates alternating current, which drives a small Lego engine which output is feed directly to a mixing desk generating a continuous tone which frequency is depended of the speed of the steam engine. Additionally a "drum" machine is incorporated which is built with Meccano parts that can be programmed to consist of up to four simple rhythm patterns; and the most important sound generating part is the sound of the machine itself, the rhythmic patterns and pulsating drones of the steam engine, the squeaking of the gear trains and the rattling of the whole structure is all important parts of the sonic experience.
The instability of the entire mechanism is extremely noticeable, and displays and reflects the physicality of the machine to an extreme degree. Everything is imminently about to go wrong, a cogwheel that jams, a screw that loosens itself, a chain falling of, water running out, the loss of steam pressure, gas running out. One could state that this is physical mechanical glitch music, but in contrast to its digital counterpart, Steam Machine Music questions the whole practice and conceptualizing of machine music in a historical perspective that points to the fact that machines always have been malfunctioning, they have always broke down, there has always been a 'real' physical mechanism that challenged the predetermined functionality of the machine.

This is fucking awesome! love how the machine becomes part of the music, one of my favourite experimental things i've found on YT

It is very good. It reminds me of peoples brains being overloaded by information non stop.
I like the concept. It's rough but intriguing and quite a mechanical assembly. Some people just don't know how to look beyond and simply look 'outside-the-box' and appreciate things.
Yes!
I agree! I am very intrigued by machines and mechanics.
I used to rebuild antique belt-driven mimeographs and small printing machines for a hobby. All the intricate parts in this video reminds me of those wonderful teenage years. Just as this machine has only a few notes, my mimeograph printed only black ink. But the process of getting to do that was fascinating,

I love it, especially the arpegiated tines. Mechanical innocence.
Wow, this is absolutely beautiful! I love how you incorporated the sounds of the machine itself. One of the reasons why I still love listening to cassette tapes is the sound that the transport wheels make.
+KarolaTea me too.
+KarolaTea i don't know about you but i love the 1950's feel love it by the way there could be more "instruments" the song needs more variety that melody was kinda bland
all that work he put into it.. that's a lot of work and time... it's mezmerizing
Not really music to me, but I love the sound of the machines. And watching this feels surreal somehow
I will say, I do not like this music. but i can appreciate it as an art. I've seen this genre of music before. this is relaxing, and i do enjoy this, for the most part. Don't let the haters bring you down. Not everyone has an artistic eye...or ear in this case.
It sounds like an alien mother ship, I love it I almost fell asleep to it strangely enough!
Repetir-tive sounds are not annoying, just listen to them :)
This is awesome. I really don't understand the dislikes.
We can see it & we can hear it.
You can touch it & probably smell it too.
That's four out of our five senses receiving some input from it.
This is why machines on this scale are always appealing to people.
Compare with the machines we have to deal with on a daily basis;~
Their parts are too small to see.
They don't make a sound
You can't touch them &
They only smell when they are about to burn out.
Thank you for this work of art(ifice)
Mechanical music! Better than much of the electronic music I have heard.
once ran a weaving mill, each moving part on the loom each made their own music but when a hundred were weaving, it was puree rock and roll.
That was exactly what I was looking for. Machine music :)
well you would scare the shite out of any intruders with this thing that's for sure!
loving the creativity
I rather enjoyed this film..
Had to watch it twice to get the full effect. The first time thru, i watched. There is so many things happening all at once so it seems a bit crazy and as in your description, it looks like the whole thing is about to fall to pieces. The second time thru, I closed my eyes & listened, and at first it was just noise of industry (on a small scale), then the "music box effect" kicked in & took me above the din. Truly a great work in both imagery & in music.
once upon a time , christmas 1943, I started my first steam machine, wow, the sound, the rush, excitement , and then connecting to MEKANO, a gift from my fathere¨s mother, I remember ---
thanks for bringing me back to happy hours of excitement and joy,
leif zacho, denmark, childhood in ANS, at that time 200 inhabitants
Blurring the lines between mechanical sounds machines usually make, and music which is usually played by human hands. I love innovation!
Fine kinetic sculpture - very creative! - Pat
Why did I cry after reading the description? Because I love machines I hate to see them fall apart.
Some of the mechanisms seem to have creative potential, if there was a song delivered out of this you would get more positive feedback.
Imagine making a "steam powered heavy metal music player" machine XD
this is utterly the most sublime video on youtube
Good now put them all together or watch wintergatan
+Jonathan Yu Wintergatan is marvellous but you cannot compare the two just because there are some similarities in the execution.
impressive great work
This might not sound great but it is impressive.
You do not deserve 929 dislikes and counting. This is amazing, being made out of Meccano. Like you say in the description, it looks like everything is going to fall apart at any second, but it never does in this video at least. I'm sure you could put some mechanical switches on the various instruments, so you flip a switch and it either engages or disengages the gears, rather than having to physically remove the greasy chains to turn something off. Just an idea though.
That was amazing
i like this, not cause of the music cause that bit needs work but cause of how its all made and put together, you could make something better but this...this is just like... wow. big step to understanding how to make it better is to make a version 1
Great work mate!
So many people who don't understand what drone is. Yo, the title of the video parodies Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. What did you expect?
Thanks a lot, the sounds is hynotic somehow. I used this as a back sound for soft music to create a eerie mechanical ambient. (Personal use)
Oh WOW, That was AWESOME
This is more like an old horror flick soundtrack than anything.
The beginning of a steampunk musical dream :)
your totally crazy but very cool.Meccano at its best,
Near the end the rumbling and the music...
Thats gonna be the noise of the city destroying death machine I'm gonna make!
So imagine that noise on an EPIC scale!
This is awesome industrial music.
Straight out of the movie brazil, love it
One of the two best short films that I have ever seen This is absolute genius and utterly mesmerizing.
#ENCHANTEDBYSMM
Ok, to be fair. That was steam machine noise... not music.
Nice instroment love it its so cool :)
I love this so much!
this is pure art! good work!!
It has a beat that I can really dance to.
This is fantastic, right up my street ; )
u will go crazy listening to this
personally I like windshield wiper music better because that's something I can pretend to rap to.
Well done, very addictive to watch and hear!
fantastic!!!!
I surely listened to this so damn high, and it just awesome how your mind opens up to this, I mean the first part makes me feel like in a horror movie such as the Ring or something like that, then the second part would be something like a childhood cartoon and the part that sounds kinda like a plane motor makes me feel like if I were in a road trying to escape from something then it comes that repetitive sound, like if I were watching some kind of xylophone in the space but reminds me childhood somehow... Then I imagine myself in a horrible situation but it ends with peace like everything´s gonna be okay haha wow what a space travel.... :D
You Sir, are a greater genius than I.
The future of IDM right here
why all the hate? that was wonderful.
With some more video editing it would become awesome.
You have my like.
Wintergatan fans worship you.
like it!
Sounds like something of a horror film
yeah. this kinda creeped me out alittle
stunning
Sounds like my hard drive.
круто! можно сходить с ума под эти звуки!
What am I doing with my life.
Well, can I just say, I liked the idea, but that somehow made me almost shit my pants couple of times.
It's a bomb getting ready to explode
i fucking love this things
yes yes, very nice song about love ..... :)
Wow what's with all the dislikes? I like it.
Amazing. i like it...
3:30 that sounds like something from the bridge of the Enterprise.
It all depends on what people call 'music' i guess..
+TheSpikeX Anyone who likes John Cage, or Ryoji Ikeda, or Karlheinz Stockhausen or many other concrete music and experimental music authors will like this.
Throwing stupid fancy names around will not make me call this music lol
got me!
+TheSpikeX Haven't you heard? People aren't allowed to have opinions anymore. Jeez, get with the times! ☺
+TheSpikeX Meet Donald Trump :3
NoT aS musicaL aS the ""GreaT Wooden MarbeL Music Maker Machine"== but stiLL Marvelous iN iTs own Right.

HAH using mechano too!
the name should be steam machine noise generator. (?)
What a great balance ~ 904 likes and 904 dislikes. lol 😂😎
However, great video. thanks
I've never seen this before so help me out. Is the machine putting together this music?
2:00 that is a bus engine, honest.
Beats x factor....
Ye this was not music. Even the music boxes were barely music. It's just a hodgepodge of sounds.
Why so many dislikes wtf?
Well, that was... some sounds. Pretty annoying, repetitive ones too.
This ost is not as good.
Shame on you valve, shame on you
PC Tips ТHIS TOOL FOR FREE STEAM MONEY IS THЕ BEST ON TTTTHЕ EEEENTIRE WEBSTORE!!!>> Steam Maachine Music
But can it play CS or TF2
We’re can I buy that gas cylinder looking thing at 1:05
Lovely machine. Now you need someone with more of a musical feel to do the punch rolls. Girlfriend perhaps?
+Logan Heinzelman wow Jesus the man is a no life for building a functional machine? That's like saying everything you own that has moving parts the people who built them have no lives also.
Noise =/= Music
thats creepy
Is this a reference to Metal Machine Music?
Хичкоку бы понравилось.
Alfred Hitchcock would have liked.
also, this is nothing like music. just noise
That certainly was interesting! I'd have hoped that after all that though the music would have sounded good. Definitely creative but pretty hard to listen to XD
Thats very "Daft" don't ya think?
.....
Sorry I had to do it.
