  • I take a look at the fascinating Motorik beat that came about thanks to the progressive minds of Jaki Liebezeit and Klaus Dinger from krautrock outfits Can and Neu! respectively.

    The motorik also left a lasting influence on music usually not consciously linked with kraut rock. The D-beat like the motorik is also a never ending beat but much more aggressive instead of hypnotic. Even later we see bands like Darkthrone adopt blast beats in a motorik like fashion to create something hypnotic as well, ofc the various early norwegian bm bands p much all stated that they were fans or influenced by various kraut rock bands but usually the emphasis is given on the impact tangerine dream etc left on norwegian bm's ambient side.

    Maureen Tucker from the Velvet Underground was the real progenitor of the motorik beat. Also check out the really obscure "Path Through the Forest" by UK psychedelic band The Factory. The drummer sounds just like Klaus Dinger, and it was recorded in 1967.

    • @andigisler
      @andigisler Před 4 lety +7

      You could trace it back to Motown - or even Stravinsky! I don't think Dinger or Liebezeit ever claimed that they invented the beat.
      But Liebezeit especially was a genius and pioneer. His drumming has a lot of similarities to African and US funk styles, yet it is unique. That's quite an achievement and it's been highly influentual.

    • @andigisler
      @andigisler Před 4 lety

      Sean S 'Dancing in the Street'' for example or 'Love is like an itching in my heart' among plenty others. I think the Velvets were very influenced by that kind of unrelenting, hypnotic best as with 'Waiting for my man'.
      Like with Hip-Hop or Reggae I think it's riduculous for anybody to claim 'invention' of those beats. It's all about taking stuff and filtering through the artist's life and expression. Sometimes an artist tries to copy something, 'failing' at it and thus creating something original.
      But thinking of Kraftwerk, it probably was the German industry and the Autobahn that was most responsible for the Motorik beat!

    • @andigisler
      @andigisler Před 4 lety

      Sean S I think early Rock and Roll was all about the merging or push-pull of jazz guys playing with a swing feel and artists like Little Richard playing straight eights. Motown definitely established the straight feel with the steady drums and tambourines - 'four on the floor' if you will. That's where I see the connection to Motorik and ultimately 'Dance Music'.

No serious journalist in Germany and no musician either has ever called Can as a Krautrock band. Shoegaze was an apt tag for MBV and Slowdive as they were literally staring at their feet and where the pedals were. Kraut evokes nothing musically; it is a vegetable. As I understand it, you can't excerpt too long--there will be take-down notices, even when applying fair use standards for educational use. Maybe links to full tracks could work in the video descriptions?

    You should work on your German pronunciation, espiecally if you're doing a video on a German topic.

    I doubt a single musician in this short video would (or would have) call(ed) their music 'krautrock'. It's an offensive and ignorant label.

      No. The germans use it with pride. Because the english journalists judged them but they didnt care.

      Yeah, it's a tricky term. I thought about using another label or at least shedding some light on its potentially derogatory meaning but I didn't want to be unclear or stray from the topic at hand. I use it because, despite stigma, people recognise and understand that it denotes a very particular brand of music from a certain era and country. I do agree though, it's not really politically correct

    • @egebamyasi773
      @egebamyasi773 Před 5 lety +1

      @@OffBeatChannel yes but politics shouldn't be discussed in the realm of music in my opinion.

    Dorky commentary that only has eyes for one genre of music-- Go listen to Suzy Q by Credence Clearwater Revival and you will hear a far better example of an un interrupted well played circular drum beat.
