  • Tame Impala's Kevin Parker sits down with Pitchfork to talk about some of his favorite drum sounds. From John Bonham's thunderous claps on Led Zeppelin's "Good Times Bad Times," to Portishead's "Holy Grail" drum feel, Kevin explains what makes these drums so influential to his own sound.

      @@zapata9617 he’s referring to the repetitive nature of the music sounding electronic. Not just extracting the drum beat and looping/sampling it. If you hear a James Brown track you can hear how it’s sampled and used but it doesn’t sound like a breakbeat. It’s a funk song. The silver apples track sounds like it could be a contemporary electronic song. I don’t think he was trying to claim they were the first drums to play like that but rather so consistent and repetitive. And he’s completely right it’s a quality of the song.

      @zapata9617 Před 3 lety +28

      @@freelance_commie Thanks, the reason I thought he was referring to breakbeats is because the drum track does sound like it could be a sampled breakbeat. The breakbeat is a drum break in a funk song. Because it is isolated they ended up being sampled a lot. The beat he is showing does sound like it could be a breakbeat that was sampled so that's where all the confusion is, because it seems like he is saying it was pre-breakbeats

      @Ethan DeMille Yeah well Tame Impala uses it when it's not appropriate. Click tracks too. I just find it interesting that a guy who makes music with drum machines posts a video fawning over classic drum tracks. If you want that sound do it like they did it. Find yourself a good drummer who plays with feeling, get a good vintage sounding kit, turn off the click tracks and press record. czcams.com/video/orJggsV9JHM/video.html

    The secret to that amazing drum sound on that Queens of the Stone Age record is the producer Eric Valentine. He is the absolute king of drum sounds. My favorite example of his signature “punch in the gut” drum sound is Can’t Stop by Maroon 5. He knows how to get the drums to explode out of the speakers without taking it too far. What’s awesome is Eric even has his own CZcams channel where he explains in detail how he gets his sounds. I highly recommend watching his channel to anyone interested in music production.
