      I lost my daddy in August last year, very unexpectedly. There's some episodes and scenes that I just cannot handle.And without my mum here too, there's definitely some real good writing that pulls my heartstrings very hard. When I lost my mum, I thought that was pretty much the end for me.. But time healed a little here and there, and especially counseling. I'm in a very hard place with going through this one, since she passed, I received a diagnosis of MS after a massage my ex paid for a remedial back, neck and shoulder massage as an anniversary gift. We used to watch The Simpsons til we fell asleep..
      My parents let me grow up watching it with them.. I will be forever greatful for the moments I did have watching it with them.. Fuck, that hurts to say at age 26..

He goes from happy about a field trip to sad about the box factory, happy about working in show business to sad about Krusty being a bad boss, happy about becoming famous to sad about being a catchphrase machine, happy about making people happy to sad about now not being able to make anyone laugh.

      They mention it on the commentary tracks a few times, but Homer really does go through massive mood changes in seconds. There's scenes where he's crying before immediately shouting out in joy.
      I guess in terms of actual story nothing quite so drastic happens but when you look at it moment to moment, he really does live life as an emotional rollercoaster.

    It's really just a battle of first half vs second half.
    Barts inner child has a much better second half and ending.
    Bart gets famous has one of the best beginnings but loses itself like you mentioned.
    They are both pretty equal. It depends on whether you are looking for more of a storyline or just more comedy. Barts inner child has the former, Bart gets famous has the latter.

  • @ToonReel001
    @ToonReel001 Před 5 lety +13

    I do find interest in how Bart's Inner Child tries to do THREE little character arcs, almost all revolved around defining traits about the main cast; Homer paying the price for his impulsive antics (again), Marge realising how much of a stick-in-the-mud the others view her, and Bart having an identity crisis from no longer having anything to rebel against. Bart has an identity crisis in Bart Gets Famous as well, but it's not as tied to his defining characteristics (that's kind of the point but just saying).
    I kinda feel like Season Five was this point where the writers worried Marge and Lisa were too sanctimonious, they got undermined and made the butt of jokes way more often from that point onward, with more times Homer or Bart got to be the 'sane guys' for once. I feel like this was a good and bad thing because it also meant it was kind of the era when Lisa's pomposity took over her character, she acts like a curmudgeonly old woman in both of these episodes, I don't think early Lisa would have been quite so contemptuous of Bart's rise to fame, she might have even been childishly jealous of it.

      Same, I never cared much for Bart gets Famous, but maybe I'm due for a Re-watch. Bart's Inner Child has become a top 10 favorite for me as an adult. Largely because of the Troy McClure appearance, but I also love the satire of the "Self-Help" genre.

  • @TealOpal
    @TealOpal Před 5 lety +12

    I've always been curious to see your thoughts on Bart's Inner Child, since, to me at least, it's an episode I've liked more and more the more times I've watched it. The Trambampoline is a fun opening set piece that sets up a lot of fun jokes (even if it has nothing to do with the rest of the episode), the Brad Goodman seminar is an entertaining scene both due to how many funny character moments there are (Italian Moe, Positive Flanders, Mr. Burns' "I'm too nice", it's crazy how many home runs they hit in this scene), and due to how apparent they make it that Brad Goodman has no idea what he's talking about. It really fits with Springfield's general "pack mentality", where one strong influence can affect the entire town. The festival scene is also really funny. There's a lot of unique character pairings and interactions (Like the Sea Captain snapping Patty and Selma and Skinner's altercation with Moe), and Marge's stupid overalls and backwords cap outfit always puts a smile on my face. When I first watched Bart's Inner Child, I remember not thinking much of it, but it seems like every time I rewatch it, there's something great I hadn't noticed the previous time. Comparatively, Bart Gets Famous strikes me as being a bit more linear and predictable, with its jokes and story beats kind of being lined up by its basic plot. Bart's Inner Child definitely strikes a higher bar with me because of how much more unique its plot and jokes are. Great video as always, happy to see your thoughts on the episode, even if they're not necessarily the same as mine.

  • @tarvinneekomainitakaan
    @tarvinneekomainitakaan Před 2 lety +5

    Bart Gets Famous is honestly one of my top three episodes from season 5 along with Cape Feare and Rosebud. I just love it when The Simpsons goes meta about itself (the Poochie episode is one of my all time favourites for the same reason). It's really fun to see Bart going through all the phases of undeserved fame while the whole thing works as a commentary on the catchphrase-focused Bartmania phenomenon. I guess it's a pretty simple story but the execution is perfect and the jokes and gags are all great. The box factory sequence is comedy gold throughout, and 7:49 could be my favourite shot of the entire series (I know it has been memed to death but whatever).
    Bart's Inner Child is pretty great too, but more uneven. The trampoline stuff is almost as fun as the box factory, Albert Brooks is always a reliable guest star, and the analysis of Bart's identity as a character is fascinating (Lisa's conversations with Bart feel like the most "intellectual" thing in season 5), but the parts don't really fit together in a smooth way. The trampoline plot has nothing to do with the rest, the Brad Goodman part does indeed drag a bit (at least in the middle of this fast-paced season), and the chaotic climax where everything falls apart and the other characters chase Bart and Homer feels like something from the later seasons. I still like it a lot, but it's definitely the less great of these two episodes.
    (Also, this is among the most entertaining Simpsons Showdown videos so far. Such a perfect pair of episodes to compare, and funny jokes from your part too.)

    Back when I used to watch the show on late afternoon/early evening reruns, I remember watching "Bart's Inner Child" many many times. It was a great classic episode. It's pacing may have been a bit slow after the trampoline segment, but that still felt like classic Simpson's pacing, which allowed the show's storyline to develop organically rather than keep jumping to a new segment or hit us over the head with repeat jokes (see Simpson's and Family Guy episodes from mid 00's onwards).
    "Bart Gets Famous", for whatever reason, wasn't shown on reruns very often. In fact, my friends and I noted how rarely we saw this episode. But whenever we mentioned it, it was never the "I didn't do it" catchphrase episode, but rather the "box factory" episode. The first segment was so great that it overshadowed the second act, even though the second act was a meta segment that parodied the Bart-man phenomenon a few years before.

      I would've paired A Fish Called Selma with Black Widower, as they're both about Selma getting married. I certainly think A Fish Called Selma would win, but Black Widower has a lot going for it. I guess one is trying to be a bit darker and mysterious, while the other has more heart and takes its time more. Early Golden Age vs late Golden Age, perhaps? I do get the feeling A Fish Called Selma dived more into the human nature of everyone, while Black Widower was more interested in building up atmosphere and I don't know for sure, but they'd decided to make this an ongoing plot, so they might have been adding a bit more incentive for Cape Feare (although they probably didn't know the episode was going to be a Cape Fear homage until later).

    Bart gets Famous is amazing! That episode always feels like a wonderful journey! It’s a fantastic joke machine. The episode is very entertaining. Also Krusty does such a good job in this episode. He’s the character who really sells it for me. However I also like Bart’s inner child. I’m happy to rewatch that story anytime. It certainly does use certain characters better! Great video! I definitely appreciate both episodes!

I'm sure there's plenty more Simpsons content for you to make but I'd love to see your take on Futurama or really any show that you have an interest in.

    I just rediscovered your channel today, glad to see that not only are you still doing 60 second reviews, but that you've branched out into other areas, which bring me to the reason I'm commenting.
    I thought of two other ideas for showdowns, all of them Homer-centric episodes.
    "Homer the Vigilante" vs "The Computer Wore Menace Shoes" have to do with Homer exacting his own justice.
    Whereas "Homer vs Lisa and the Eighth Commandment" and "Homer vs the Eighteenth Amendment" not only both involve him breaking the law, but have a catchy titling scheme.
    There doesn't seem to be any way to contact you, such as a Patreon or other form of social media, so here you go.
