Omi and Buntaro will be on the side of Toranaga in the battle facing Ishido
Mariko Anna Sawai I believe she has a academy Emmy or Oscar award ahead of her. Great performance
She was incredible & this was a really beautiful ending for her character i thought. I don't mind a book change here & there when we get scenes that good!
An Emmy is possible and she might get a nomination. All around the cast was great. Her quiet composure and the sadness expressed in the tea ceremony with Buntaro was brilliant acting. Buntaro deserves a supporting actor award too.
She is definitely a great actress. In fact I first watch her in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (she was good in that show but I feel Shogun really is the show that she shines.) I even check out filmography and I was surprised that she start or her one of her early roles was F9 (the one with John Cena.)
Still she is definitely going to have a long career and I hope start in other industry films like not just prestige tv but also movies (rather drama, action, or even Oscar worthy films.) for some reason her rising career reminded me a lot of Lupita Nyong'o rise to stardom during the early 2010s?
@@jonfreeman9682 Yabu deserves every award possible as well. Tadanobu Asano was brilliant in that role.
I wil be gutted if she’s not nominated, but yes , she’s good enough to win it !
she also regain her family name by saving the hostages
W0W! Thanx for this most excellent recp!
Thanks for watching 🙏
Awesome review. Seppuku is pronounced set-pu-ku, BTW.
Women are often referred to as the crimson color (red), and an example would be: Ko-itten. Ko-itten (紅一点)is used when there’s only one woman among few men, like one woman executive in a boardroom or one woman in the group of people singing karaoke. Perhaps “Crimson Sky (Ko-ten 紅天)” can also mean one woman going to heaven.
I can’t wait for next week!
Breakdown is solid - at 2:25ish you had said Mariko committing sepaku would cause unrest as the other members liked her because she’s Christian. This could absolutely be true but I thought it was because her family had deep roots and had been samurai for 1000+ years.
I believe he also said that. HowMariko is still very beloved by the ppl on top of the Christian connection
Western barbarian here demanding cannons :p!!!. Hahaha, in reality just putting up the algorithm tribute. Good and short breakdown as always 🖤. Thank you for all the shogun content 😊.
Thanks Dracula! Hopefully we get some cannon action in the finale!! 💥
We've had this side of Japan's culture shared with us before. Before the 1980 version of Shogun, one didn't see sushi bars or sushi in the grocery stores like we do today. That's but one example of the earlier film version of Clavell's novel having an influence.
Wow, didn't really expect them follow the book at this point, and what a great episode. This was nearly page for page, line for line the book, only parts different were fantastic additions. Only misgivings I have are that they didn't force Blackthorne to learn Japanese. Still give it ALL the awards, fantastic job
Yea overall this series has been some of the best tv I've watched in years!
I’m glad they avoided Asian Fetishisation; but I do feel that they over corrected at the expense of Blackthorne. Now I wonder how much of this was intentional and how much of it was due to the actor not learning enough Japanese on time (no shade on Cosmo Jarvis, Japanese is one of the hardest languages to learn)
Ishido failed miserably, all he had to do was capture Mariko after she left.
Crimson Herring.
I theorized many flourishes to the storyline that could be added (None happened); but the main story theory panned out. Honestly, I was afraid about how this would play out as it could easily have been a cliche thing.
But thankfully, as always, the show handled it marvellously. Her scene with the naginata did not devolve to a “girl power moment taking down 7-9 men” but was instead played out with her voicing what all the Lords in the castle were feeling but were to afraid to say.
Her ritual su***de (it is not called seppuku for women, as they do not slit their belly but would fall on the dagger to their heart) was also used politically. Sugiyama was prevented from attending, but probably did hold the meeting he promised at the gate, and along with Ochiba and Ohno, convinced Ishido to give the permit.
Then Yabusbige’s betrayal sees the shinobi attacking the palace staff and some low rank samurai (or more likely ashigaru) but not laying a finger on any of the women and children (the VIPs). The plan would most likely be to abduct Mariko, make it look like they sneaked out in the night and have her removed discretely while creating plausible deniability for Ishido. Mariko read through this. So instead of going through the gate as Yabushige suggested, she went to a dozo with reinforced doors in which the only way in was to blast their way through. It was at this point where it sank in: she chose the place where she would die. And it all played out perfectly. I’m sure to more casual watchers, especially those who don’t know even the faintest bit of history, the multiple fake outs would have had them having multiple sighs of relief, only to be gutted in the end.
The show continues to impress. I too am glad Mariko's fight scene was realistic & not an over embellished choreography. Shogun continue to stay clear of cheap tropes & i love that. Really gonna miss this series when its over!
@@JeremyIceAndFire33 it was one creative decision away from being cringe and/or cliché. And they toed the line perfectly. One more week and I can finally read the book. 😅😅😅
@khaii13 yea they handed it well thankfully! And yea looking forward to having some book discussions & comparing the two. And i really want to watch the 80s miniseries now & see how they differ.
@@JeremyIceAndFire33 is the show done after one season?
@AFR0MAMBA yes unfortunately, looks like they're covering the whole book in 1 season.
4:50 Actually it was very close to the source material
i wander how Markio's priest friend is going to handle what happened to her. will he turn on Ishido? Great episode and Video hun!!!
Alvito is this Naive Christian Priest who strives to do the right thing despite knowing all the shady stuff his superiors are doing. He will be completely wrecked by this. I am 90% sure he won’t be able to do anything meaningful once he hears the news (other than whisper to Kiyama-dono, or his Father superior); as him and Mariko got some form of closure in that confession scene.
No he's neutral. He could not even convince the Christian lords to support Toranaga.
Great breakdown but this is false advertising. When the episode is called Crimson Sky then fans expect John Blackthorne sailing the Erasmus firing his cannons storming the castle walls with thousands of samurai clashing swords and arrows flying and fire smoke and a battle for all ages. But we didn't get that. The finale better deliver.
I was a little disappointed we didn't get any cannon action too.
@@JeremyIceAndFire33I think John used “a bit“ of Canon action
that night, oh.. he also used his pistol. None were blanks.
@@carlart74 haha! That he did!
The original series left out Mariko's battle with the grey samurai, I always thought that was it's only major flaw. Unfortunately the fight depicted here was pretty weak tea compared to the book

Toranaga will capitalize by sowing division, those loyal to Ishido will probably start fighting each other. Everyone else will turn on Ishido and take Toranaga's side.
I think the division is already there thanks to Mariko's actions in ep 9. Question now is, how will Toranaga capitalize on it.
@@JeremyIceAndFire33 the ability to go to war and have a fair fight, possible kill or take power from Ishido and reimplement the Taiko's plan. Possibly prevent himself from dying.
@Calinotch06 Indeed, after losing a big portion of his army in the earthquake, he's certainly prepared as well as he could've considering. Mariko's sacrifice just might give him the edge he needs.
I still don't understand why this episode was called "Crimson Sky."
Imo, I expect because the Crimson Sky plan was essentially a misdirection for Mariko to sow division within the council, by naming it Crimson Sky they essentially subvert expectations of the audience
The Japanese martial arts concepts, omote vs. ura: so well demonstrated on multiple levels and in various ways in this mini-series!
THIS EPISODE IS STUPID!!! IT MAKES NO SENSE AND THE WRITERS DID NOT RESEARCH!! FLAWS:
1) Mariko was tasked to A) rescue Toranaga's Wife, Consort and New Son, and escort them from the castle. B) if refused to leave, that proves all the "royals" are prisoners. Her "Suicide" was to Embarrass Ishido and the Court.
2) Since Ishido relented to release Mariko and the others, HER DUTY WAS TO GET THEM TO Toranaga, letting herself be killed was BREAKING THE PLEDGE to Toranaga!! MAKE NO SENSE, ESPECIALLY since she just found Love with Blackthorne!!
3) THERE IS NO HISTORY OF WOMEN OF ROYALITY COMMITING SEPPUKU! Mariko was a "Lady", ie Royalty, and NOT A SAMURAI! QUOTE: The custom known as "seppuku," which specifically refers to ritual suicide by disembowelment, was reserved for men of the samurai class in feudal Japan. Samurai women had different methods, which traditionally involved either slashing their own throat or stabbing themselves in the heart.Apr 16, 2024" AGAIN, MARIKO WAS NOT A SAMURAI, She Was Royality, "Lady"!!! The Character that Markio is BASED ON, NEVER HAD CONTACT WITH BLACKTHORNE, DID NOT COMMIT SUICIDE OF ANY KIND, was actually killed by her servant as she about to be captured.!! PS, the ACTUAL "Translator" that Toranaga assigned in the REAL story was a JAPANESE MAN, NOT A WOMAN!! The Writing in the Hulu Fantasy Shogun is Bullshit and Full or Flaws and Historical Inaccuracies! Blackthorne's REAL Character "Adams" Actually MARRIED his Japanese Consort assigned by Toranaga and they had two children.
I bet she still alive
