The actor that plays Toranaga deserves an Oscar. I felt that death scene in my soul. All of them in that scene were right in the moment.
That will stay with me for some time. I hadn't felt that since Ned Stark
Yea the acting is next level, Hiroyuki Sanada is delivering his Magnum Opus performance. This is the one he'll be remembered for!
agreed
You explained that emotion perfectly! Whew!
The tea ceremony was awe inspiring, gotta admit Mariko's response to Buntaro's offer to die together is the coldest thing I've ever heard anyone say, just gutted him with no beheading to stop the pain
Cold as f! 🥶
He's a wife beater, come on...
Wow sooo well said!
Hiromatsu went out like a BOSS!!! What devotion and sacrifice for both his Lord and country he showed in this episode.
An incredibly brave sacrifice, stayed true to the end!!
The acting from torranaga and hiromatsu are probably some of the best i have EVER seen! In a different language no less. Such devotion to the role. I actually need therapy after this episode and the emotional roller coaster only to find out ALL of the tying connections throughout the entire season. I’m in awe of this show. Thank you for reviewing it sooo incredibly!
Thank you! Same here too, definitely the most emotional episode yet. The screen presence of Toranaga & Hiromatsu was outstanding, i can't say enough about their performances!
Another point for me is the mind changing of Anjin. When he went to the market, the priest stood out to say that Anjin need firewood, while Anjin used the word sumi (charcoal), which is a more advanced vocabulary in Japanese. And while the priest asking about if Anjin is going to wear the robe to see other sailors, the priest was trying to teasing the identity of Anjin himself as a heretic. The attitude while Anjin replied simply told anything.
Then to the back ally while Anjin decide to kill the other sailor without feeling any guilty (same attitude as his company that holding a lantern), I was comparing to the episode 1 while Umi chopped off the head of a villager. Somehow Anjin's black inner selfish thought (腹黑, harakuro) was revealed not only by the sailor's questions but also by Anjin's action.
You make some really great points. It was interesting to say the least seeing Blackthorne go that dark & attack his own men. He's spent all season trying to get back to them only to realize he doesn't fit in anywhere anymore. He'll never truly be accepted in Japan even as a Hatamoto & now, he's spent so much time with Toranaga that his own people now seem foreign to him.
@@JeremyIceAndFire33 it seems that JB has spent enough time with his Japanese captors that he's now aware of how smelly and brutish his men are and how he once was also. That sailor reminded him of that and also told him those guys would never trust him enough to sail with him again. They've adapted to the easy life of drunken debauchery as prisoners of Toranaga.
No words were spoken, only glances exchanged, Hiromatsu saw the other generals preparing to commit sepuku and took the lead knowing Toronaga needed them more than himself, he knew his role and knew tjat it would have more meaning to both Osaka and thise present
Hiromatsu was my fav character. He went out with honor
Brutal I knew boss was playing the long game just presentation for the other generals to fall in line great sacrifice 🤙🏽
Yea that was insane! RIP to Hiromatsu, a true Samurai
I felt real empathy for Buntaro after his tea ceremony and what Mariko said to him. I believe he's tried to be a good husband, truly loves her and has kept her alive so she could complete the plan her father had for her. Tragic what Hiromatsu felt compelled to do as his last service to his lord. Toranaga has lost a life long friend and confidant. Most intense episode full of emotions. I still can't figure out how Ochiba seems to be so smart, yet also cannot tell who would really protect her son. And it's NOT Ishido.
Great points all around. I do agree i did feel a bit bad for Buntaro during the tea ceremony, Mariko came off very cold in that scene.
Don’t rely on Toranaga to protect the Taikō’s heir.
@@alesh2275 when he was dying the Taiko asked Toranaga to stay behind and offered him to become regent to protect his heir. Why? Because he was the only one who could be trusted not to kill his son and take over as Shotgun. Toranaga refusing because it would mean his own death so the Taiko revealed his real plan for 5 regents to rule until his son came of age.
@@neowuwei7851 you got it wrong: The Taikō was never serious about Toranaga being sole Regent. It was a test, a test that Toranaga passed when he refused. In fact the documents that Taikō already had prepared were for 5 Regents. There was no document for Toranaga as sole regent.
Also, you’ll be in spoiler territory, but Chapter 61 of the book is Toranaga’s only POV chapter, so you’ll know his real motivations ….
@@alesh2275 there's a great reason why the Taiko ONLY made that offer to one warlord. The only one he could really trust.
I think Saeki was in on the ruse for the beginning. But it could also be that Toronaga anticipated that he would betray him.
Omi is turning out to be quite thoughtful & intelligent
He definitely surprised me in this ep. The scene with kiku too where he's realizing he's not even sure what he's fighting for anymore. This is the downside of Toranaga playing things too close to the chest, it can hurt the morale of his men.
@@JeremyIceAndFire33 agreed.
I think the show tried to be loyal to the book but it had to be impactful and show the ultimate sacrifice and that was not through the other lords but though his faithful right-hand, Hiromatsu.
finally some acting opportunity from sanada
Another great breakdown. Im totally starting to notice other channels copying your content by the way.
Lol, I have noticed some similarities out there. But I try to give ppl the benefit of the doubt.
I truly think Toronoga was surprised by his brother's actions. The actor who plays him does such a good job of showing range with his face....you can see it in his eyes. He didnt expect it. Everything that happened after was because Toronoga was forced to pivot.
Yea this cast has some of the best facial expressions I've seen. They can say alot with just a look
No Mention of the tea ceremony between Mariko and Buntaro.... Another anguished and powerful scene
When the show started and I saw a Ghanaian name as the director, I hated it. I thought it would be horrible. But my God.. Emmanuel osei kuffour is a master. He is definitely one to look out for.
Yea some very powerful scenes in this one.
lol why would his name bother you that much??
The one aspect I think doesn't match Toronaga is if he is so smart to plan his friends own sepoku, and always be one step ahead you would think he would be smart enough to know that his son would try to attack his brother just like he went after Jozen. Doesn't seem like it fits his character to miss something like that.
That's one of my big problems with this whole thing too. Especially knowing how rash his son is you think he would've taken some kind of step to keep Nagakado from flying off the handle
@@JeremyIceAndFire33 he knew his son would do that I reckon , at the end he even thanked his ‘son’ and hiramatsu for buying him more time , the death of his son actually allowed him 49 days to mourn as well
The only way he could've stopped his son would've been to tell him and that would've spilled the plan. He instructed his son to stand down. Send like u expect perfection. No one is all knowing/powerful.
@@Yae_Yae_Agreed. And while his son's death is tragic, it was how he would've wanted to go; helping his father. People forget his son was a warrior who was simply a casualty of war. His death may save lives in addition to helping his clan achieve victory.
Hiromatsu knows he is useless in battle and the best thing to do is to fool Ishido and his spies killing himself in front of Toranaga.
I wouldn't say he's useless in battle. Even at his age he was still cutting down Samurai with relative ease on his way out of Osaka. He just knew this was the best way to sell Toranaga's defeat.
Notice how Buntaro calls him Anjin and not barbarian?
Yea good catch, during the tea ceremony i believe. The first time I've heard him refer to him as Anjin
Who would sacrifice their strongest ally to gain strategic advantage !! actually what kind of advantage you could possibly get from sacrificing your best friend !!! I think Torunaga is a madman!! I said what I said.
to deter spies and convince the enemy that they will surrender, his right hand refused to surrend, commits seppuku, to enemies its solid proof even though its deception
What happened?? I was just chatting on a live stream then POOF
That was just a live premiere of a pre recorded video. We'll be going Live tomorrow night to do a deeper dive.
@@JeremyIceAndFire33 oh cool. I’ll subscribe to make sure I get notified.
@@briandhaze5906 thanks! I appreciate it. 🙏
His brother betrayed him
