  • In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves reviews Ruger's new MAX-9 Micro Compact 9mm. The MAX-9 holds 10+1 rounds of 9mm in a very small package, and is reasonably priced with an MSRP below $500. But how does it compare to its competition, mainly the SIG P365, the Smith & Wesson Shield Plus, and the Springfield Hellcat? James compares all four of these guns in this video. It has night sights out of the box, it's optics ready, and it's inexpensive, but is it a bargain or a bust? Check today's video and find out.

    Let us take a moment to appreciate those extremely long internal slide frame rails. If my assessment is correct, the Ruger MAX-9 has the longest internal slide rails of all the current micro compacts. Runner-up (possibly tied) would have to be the SIG P365. Whereas the Springfield Armory Hellcat and the S&W Shield Plus have your standard dual internal slide rails.
    It also warms my heart to see Arizona on the side of a firearm. This project was the "biggest secret" in Yavapai County for the longest time. I would like to take the opportunity to commend the residents of Prescott, Arizona and the surrounding Tri-City area for keeping such a tight lid on the subject matter. I know some of you are watching.

      Depends on what you're buying from them... Their semi auto pistols? No, they're cheap. Their revolvers? S&W's, Taurus, and Charter Arms are all cheaper than they are. Many Italian companies make cheap SAA clones far cheaper than a Ruger Vaquero, Ruger Blackhawk, and etc. AR-15's? They're actually pretty cheap for how good they truly are so that's a big win for them. The AR market is oversaturated though as a whole so finding a cheap and quality AR is not hard to do(not counting the current situation). But then you've got their bolt actions like the American series. Savage and Mossbergs are cheaper and when Remington was making them the 783's were cheaper too. Now, quality COULD be debated on the American vs the rest of them but I've used all of them and sell all of them at my work, the Ruger's don't sell as often due to their price.
      I don't think Ruger is a bad company as a whole mind you. But they are not always cheap when it comes to their asking prices and I don't believe the final product is always worth the extra cost.

      @@Predalien195 I can definitely respect your experience and knowledge on the subject. Rugers tend to hang around my local gun shops(Southwest Michigan) and many aren't willing to give them much a chance. But as far as price i believe that Max-9 is cheaper than the models James compared to it. I just don't believe Rugers from a quality standpoint are as bad as many believe. Hell, Rugers in price might actually even be the quality to price ratio cut off where anything at or above is great and anything below is likely not worth a flys nutt sack.

      @Predalien195 Před 3 lety +12

      @@prstoxbeats4734 Well I do work in a gun store and this has been my experience... Their semi autos ever since the P series have been crap. The SR series was decent and had potential but they wasted it.
      The current crop of guns they got, the Security 9 is their best they are offering value wise to me. I see LC9/EC9 pistols come back for repairs often, same with LCP's and lately the Ruger-57's too. Even had a LC9 Pro that out of the box, racked the slide and the front sight fell off.
      Ruger revolvers though have been sturdy for a long time and that hasn't changed. Seen a few issues with them over the years like the .327 Federal Magnum SP101's. Namely the early models which were just rechambered .32 H&R Magnum SP101's and they didn't ream the chambers out well so cases would swell after firing and get stuck.
      Despite earlier reputations, currently the best "Budget" friendly guns are Taurus. We sell probably 10 to 15x the amount of Taurus guns to just 1 Ruger like the Security 9 or EC9 and I see far fewer guns needing returns for repairs. So I do believe their reputation for semi auto pistols is relatively well deserved with exception to guns like the Mark series .22 LR guns.
      I would take a Ruger Security 9 over something like a S&W SDVE series pistol all day long but I'd take a Taurus G3 or TH9 over both. But that's just what I've seen with my own eyes.

    • @Predalien195
      @Predalien195 Před 3 lety +6

      @@tylerchristel9087 It's just an expression like "costs and arm and a leg". Some companies really do ask a lot for such basic guns sometimes. The AR15 market is a prime example. Guns like Daniels Defense. Many are very basic bare bones mil-spec guns that really offer nothing competitive about them for their pricing other than the name. Obviously quality of parts and components matter but it's not hard to find one with equal quality for less that's built from the factory or one you can make yourself.
      In the handgun market, many feel this way about Glock, Sig, and H&K. But of course it's all subjective opinion.

    I really like Ruger. I picked one of these up recently for $440. Personally I like the “rolling” feel of the trigger. Feels like a revolver pull which I prefer. Has everything on it stock that I would normally upgrade when I get a new pistol. I added a Holosun 507k. It’s a great carry pistol. I switch carry between this and my 43x which I also love but had to spend a lot of $$ upgrading things on it to make it what I want it a carry gun and it still doesn’t have a red dot.

    Nice video and some outstanding points about +P+ warnings and so on. I was looking at getting one of these and now I may just stay with a know item S&W as I have a Shield 45 for four years and it is hands down a great little CCW. Mine came with the green laser and I had to change out the battery just a few months ago so that tells us how good the S&W folks do with quality on their guns. The new S&W has a ported barrel along with a tuned action and outstanding trigger from what I have learned in just the last hour. With all of those items and the known quality of S&W I am going that route. My current CCW are the 365XL with the optic Romeo Zero which is the name of that pistol I believe. It is one of the most accurate hand guns I've ever shot, along with the P320 C both of them are dead on if you practice like we should. The hellcat is very easy to shoot as well and I used to have that for a good while as my carry gun and it would pleasantly surprise me when I ended up my range session with it and the groups where the size of a half dollar or smaller from 10 yds which is good for me. I can't wait to shoot the new S&W though as it will be a great addition to anyones collection.

    I think it is smart for Ruger to only have a single model (cut for RMR). It reduces capital tooling costs, mfg costs and mfg time, marketing & packaging costs, and it allows them to be faster to market. Folks who don't use the RMR cut probably don't care that it is there, so no negative there. I am a tiny bit surprised there is no rail mount, but it *is* a very small package. While the +P+ thing is a little surprising, OTOH, how many people actually read the manual? Kudos to you for doing so. It makes me wonder if some competitors didn't think or bother to include the warning but might thave had they thought to do so? @@gregoryjsnyder8150 I have a few issues with the LCP2 22lr.
      1) It only comes with one magazine. (Extra magazines are expensive. The best deal I found was $40 for 2.)
      2) It is really picky when it comes to ammo. (CCI Mini Mags seem to work the best and was told this when I purchased it.)
      3) I can't find a pinky extension for it anywhere! I understand it is a micro pistol, but a pinky extension would do wonders for this firearm.
      Other than that, it is a good for training and plinking if you can find one on sale. I purchased mine new about a year ago for $289 (with a 100 rounds of CCI Mini Mags thrown in the deal) which I think is a fair price, but have seen them for advertised for as much as $400. That being said, I think it's a great hiking/tackle box firearm since it is so small. Trust me, I'm not hating on it, just stating the few issues I've personally run into. I now demand that the patented Jimmy "Booty-Shorts" Reeves "Mariachi Band Test" be conducted on all firearms from here on out.
    Now you just need to find a shot-out M9 Beretta from the U.S. Army's Tanker arms room inventory to use as a baseline.

A lot easier than it sounds.

    The look is about like a scaled up LCP II - I love the look. If I hadn’t just bought and EC9S recently, (that I shoot better than the LC9S I had) I would probably buy one of these.

    Loving the ruger max 9. One thing that too bothered me was the rattle. But what took that almost 100% away was upgrading the trigger. I noticed the default triggers safety was causing most of the noise when shaking the firearm. Upgrade that and you now have a 95% less rattling and quicker trigger pulling and reset high quality feeling firearm. Your welcome.

      Maybe it's like the LC9s Pro, press down the take down lever, rotate the pistol lever side down, then push back the slide a fraction of an inch. The pin should drop right out without use of a tool.
