How to change tyres on Tenere 700 yourself and save money

- Time to get some more aggressive tyres again. The Pirellis are sweet but a bit to much road for me. I had the Mitas E09 on previously but now it's time for some Motoz action.
Tools needed and torque:
27mm socket for rear wheel nut (105Nm)
19mm hex for front wheel axle (72Nm)
10mm socket for front pinch bolts (21Mn)
12mm socket for front break caliper (40Nm)
Not sure why I watched this video having fitted tyres on bikes and cars for decades but this guy has that certain entertainment factor that is compelling.
He tells the tale, warts and all, illustrating any errors as he proceeds.
Such honesty in this day and age is refreshing.
No fancy garage with special tools, just heaps of common sense and practical tips based on his experience.

Top tip, don't tighten the valve nut all the way down. After you've inflated the tube a bit, push the valve in (the whole valve not the core) and all your excess air will rush out straight away and you won't think you've pinched the inner tube 👍

Still a useful description of changing a T7’s tires. Thanks! You were saying once you thought you’d pinched a tube flat, because you could hear air leaking after you’d brought it up to pressure, but no fault found when you take it apart again. Happened to me, too.

I did exactly the same job yesterday on my Tenere 700 - From Pirelli's to Motoz. As you say, i can confirm that demounting the Pirellis is a absolute nightmare.. I like your advise to insert the tube first an then mount the tire. Its so much easier and saves a lot of time an nerves. Thanks for your entertaining video and greetings from southern germany ;)

The 10mm pinch bolts in front axle can be slackened with the rally raid tool also as the socket is inside the hex drive for the front axle .

LOL I ran into the same problem just this weekend putting new tires on my tiger 955i, thought I pinched it too but it was just air that was escaping from in between the tire and Tube... took it all back apart for nothing haha.. Lessons Learned. One tool that I use that has made a world of difference putting the tires back on is a BAJA NO PINCH Tire Tool, the tool is a great investment!

@@NomadSweden Done it now. I put the Mitas E7 on. But it took me foreever, maybe i am not such a good mechanic, just over 5 hours. First it was a nightmare to break the bead and then i really struggled to get the tire completly from the rim, so one side was off but to have it completly off , i really had problems.
It is much harder than it looks like when u watch peroople do it.
Just for a small tipp for people reading it, use screm clamps to break the bead that is so much easier. See other people do it here on youtube.
Changed FrontTire now, that was only 45 minutes. Much easier to break the bead using the BeadProFS from MotionPro. Did it now on front (90/90 Mitas E-07) and rear tire (Mitas E-07+ 150/70). I can recommend the MotionPro Beadpro they really work.

I keep trying this method and it just never works for me. I'll keep trying. Last night i put a TKC80 on the front of my T7. I had to revert to putting one bead on, then put the tube in. I've been using tire lube as that's what we've used the last 20+ years of changing our tires. I may have to look at that paste you're using. Kudos! Cheers from Canada
Rear wheel wheel balance on the Axel alone in swing arm brake caliper clear cush drive and sprocket removed will allow you to find the heavy spot add wait till it stops turning to be more accurate add wait till it starts to turn again split the difference.
Front wheel I found too much resistance within the bearing but with a smaller shaft a thicker hard spacer between that and the bearing (free play between each) allowed me to minimise this resistance and same procedure for rear add weight to stop further weight to measure inaccuracy split the difference I know I'm cheap but I would rather ride then anything else

Hola! I make about 300-350 km in one tank and that's ok I think. However there are tank solutions coming up for the T7, like larger tanks and even built in extra tanks in the rear fairings. So just wait a little longer if you need it. Personally, if I go to desolate areas I would bring extra fuel in a bladder or can.
Absolutely agree with you, the stock tank has more than enough range, unless you want to go to a very remote area. It is more a look thing for me. A Ténéré always came with a big fuel tank. I miss the T7 prototype tank in the final production bike. It would have been very sweet

Good thinking with those clamp pistols!! I'm going to remember that! I scratched my rims up pretty badly trying to keep the tyre off the bead, even with those stupid silicone 'rim protection' pads...
Yes my rims are scratched like hell on the inside but It’s only paint. The clamps are a nice to work with.

Hey Robert, good video...takes the mystery out of changing tyres!. The Motoz look good and people speak well of them. One thing I do like about the original Pirelli's is their awesome road grip . But you have the advantage of lots of great trails to ride!. By the way, my partner just said to me ' are you actually watching someone changing tyres on a Sunday afternoon...!🤣 '. It's important T7 stuff I replied...you wouldn't understand! Cheers Steve

Exactly 5 times. Two times alone. And... I did struggle with getting the bead off on the Pirellis. I cut that part 😊 but practice does help, and if you are two, it is half the effort.
I just had to change my tube due to a nail for the first time. It took myself including help from 2 other friends. I did thankfully learn a bit more about how to work the tire to remove it so hopefully next time I can do it alone but I am scared about putting the tire back on as it is a pain in the butt lining up the rear brake and not knocking out the spacers out with each attempt at the same time.
Indeed the brake can be a pain. But training makes perfect

For years I changed tires on the ground on my knees before I finally brioke down and used a pry bar to open my wallet to buy a tire changing stand, now I wonder why did I wait so long. The Baja no pinch tool, or equivalent, is also very handy. I love everything about the Motoz tires except the price, they are great tires.
I second you on the Baja no pinch. Two friends have them and they work slick. I have a tire changing stand but afraid to use it with tubes. For our tubeless tires it worked great.

Thanks! The lube is from a cheap store called Biltema and its ”tyre lube”
Next time seat on the bike and pump a little the forward forks before tightenig the axis shaft. This will help to correctly align the fork pipes.
A safety precaution: fix the central stand in his position before starting to work. It will prevent the bike from falling on you when the forward/rear wheel is removed and the snap off from his positiin for any reason.
This can be easily done by using a short rope/strap between the central stand and any solid part in the frontal zone of the engine ( frame, crash-bars, etc.)

It's so much easier that way, just don't inhale the baby powder. And please buy some bead buddies, I learned that the hard way.
You can also put just a litte bit of air in the tube before you start putting the tire back on the rim, just so it is not completely flat = smaller chance for pinching the tube.
I saw that you use dialon. When I did scubadiving many used dialon as thalk for the latex sealings but since it contains other stuff many said that it shortens the life of the sealings. Insted we bougth thalcum at the pharmacy without any parfume or oils. The inner tyre is much thicker so it might not be an issue but maybe worth to consider if going on a longer ride.

I picked up some good tips there, thank you, not done my own tyres yet but I have everything ready, I even bought a balancer... not sure I should have bothered lol, but I reckon once I've done about 4 tire changes I would have broken even... providing I can do it lol
Good luck! Training makes perfekt. Here it costs at least €100 to have a shop do it for me and I run out 3 tyres per year so it's a big saver. And, good to know if you need to do it trail side.

Just the tonic I needed to lift my spirits however, apart from not needing to balance at least the front wheel, did you really manage to lever the tyres off with those steel tyre levers without marking the finish on the rims? I just had tyres professionally replaced at a tyre fitters (and they managed to nip a brand new tube) so I refitted the front wheel in about 5 mins but the rear one took longer than I care to mention during which time the dog went indoors because the air was so blue! Great video from a personable chap. Please keep them coming!

Thanks! This centerstand was Yamaha oem but I don’t have a centerstand anymore. Removed it for weight and it got often stuck in offroad.
@@NomadSweden To be honest, I was surprised to see it on your bike after I saw the type of riding you do in your other videos. Makes sense to get rid of it. My concern with not having one is having a solution to change a tire at the side of the trail. Perhaps a video is in order to show us how you would handle a flat on the trail without the center stand. I'm sure it would be popular content.
I have no tutorial but episode 7 of ”here be dragons” we fix a flat on the Tenere on the trail in the Albanian mountains using a rock. I also have a small trailstand in my toolkit.

Griass Di Thomas! I never balanced the tire and it has been good every time. Except for the UHD-innertube. When I installed that, I had to balance the tire with moving and adding weights.

@@thomkru6328 I don't have any balancing tools, but I do use the wheel axle holding the wheel in my hands to see if I can feel something obvious. If there are markings (red dot) on the tire I use that also. Then I ride the bike and hope for the best. If there are vibrations I take the wheel to my buddy who has balancing equipment.

I think it was michelin tubes but I’m not sure. I got them at my local shop and they picked them for me but you can get them in any online bike store also.

Question - What's sized tubes does the Teneré require? I see in the video that you have heavy duty Dunlop tubes. Which ones are those? This is the first bike I have owned with tubed tires and I have not found any information in owner's manual regarding the tubes, only tire sizes.
Also, do you have to purchase tires specifically that take tubes or can you use any ADV tire as long as its the correct size? Skål! 🍻
Skål my friend :) For tubes you only need the wheel size 18" rear and 21" front. The thickness depends on what she likes. I use 2mm tubes now. "Kenda Tuff Tubes". The thicker, the more resistant, but also more wrestling to install.
With tubes you can run tyres that are both TL and TT. You can run tyre width 150 (standard) or the narrower 140 which is much cheaper. Narrow tyres are better for offroad. Good luck!

Hi there and thanks! I have used both 2mm thick Tuff Tubes and 4 mm Michellin UHD. Both has worked well. Check my tyres video about the Motoz nd others. Wirks well in dry twisties but now wet.

Tips för ballansering:
Se till att den gula eller röda pricken på de nya däcket är i höjd med ventilen, pricken är den lättaste punketn på däcket och ventilen är den tyngsta punkten på slangen.
Gör du så brukar man slippa ballansera då däckvikterna var placerade så från frabrik.
Japp, Motoz märker dock inte sina däck med prickar tyvärr.

Hi and thanks! The T7 comes with tubes and I haven't converted yet. The rear rim is TL ready but front rim does not have the TL hump, so a new rim would be needed for a true TL solution.

Thanks! That’s a tough one. I’s say marginally Dunlop in the lead due to better grip on cold wet tarmac. Inbthe dirt the both rock. Motoz wins for me though since the Dunlop is very pricey in Sweden.

I run pretty much the same all the time. Around 2 bar (29psi). Rarely below that.

Yes Motoz are super tyres. Just a little hard which makes them slippery on tarmac and stones.
I too bought the same bike, in the same color. Although in Canada the Red is more of a Candy Apple red. I went with the factory tank pads and took your advise on the rear carrier. Very happy with the rack except it weights just over 6 kgs, however it's functionality and rugged design is worth the extra weight.
I am looking for the same Motoz tires but have only found listing (in Canada) for tubeless Front = (54Q) and I think I need (54R) Did you install Tube Type (TT) or Tubeless (TL) on yours ?
And how did they perform over the summer ?
Yes its strange that the markets have different version of red 😙 I run TL versions of most tyres and the TL Motoz works great. I mainly use them in the warm season since they get very hard and slippery in the cold/wet season on tarmac.

Thanks. Tubes make friction and heat against the tyre. Powder or slime is used to reduce that friction.

I am not sure actually. I forgot to check. The dealer handed it to me and it was in clear plastic wrapping so the logo wasn't obvious. If I had to guees, I think it may have been Michelin.
just put some mitchelin anakee wilds on mine just finished 20 min ago . put you tube on and you pop up. ankees are a sod to take off and put on front was the worst. got the same pump to pump them up balane was good to. dont think i could change one on a trail .would have to run them flat. that bike will come alive with them on.

Watching this, I am reminded by my Bike Mechanic on how the alignment of the rear wheel is very important.. he used to use a measuring tool to ensure the correct measurement on both sides of the back wheel was accurate.. scaring me with the comment that if the wheel is not straight, it will cause wear in the wrong places, and damage some parts (can't remember what, it has been over 3 years since he said it).
How do you ensure the rear wheel is correctly aligned.. with the correct chain slack for the T7?
(Granted, I have only watched until 13m 10s, but am thoroughly enjoying the vid) :)

The tyres are for tubeless and I run about 2.0 bar in them.
Glad I watched after 15 years in the tire industry of course I'm very competent with a pair of tyre levers but that is the best bead breaker I have seen for the side of the road perhaps not a hammer but I work out something that's in my tool kit

I am pleased to see someone after my own heart plenty of talcum powder makes a massive to the longevity of the tube but I must admit I do not go for the thick tube I do too much road work on my t7 and Michelin have spent all their development to minimise the weight and thickness of a tyre to control the heat for me too then put all that weight and heat back unnecessarily
@@justadam1917 Since the video I have now gone one step back to 2mm Kenda Tuff Tube. Perhaps unfounded worry, but it just feels like an insurance over the stock tube.

Just do it 😊 The blue tape is part of the standard rim to protect the tube from the spoke nipples.
I might buy motoz next time, just for ease of installation! My trailmax missions absolutely kicked my ass. Good thing they supposedly last so long because I do not look forward to taking them off :D
I do this 3 times every year. JnlessbI get a flat. It gets easier every time.
@@NomadSweden I hope so! I ended up taking the rear to a shop because I couldn't get the bead over the rim on the second side. It threw my tire iron back so hard it put a hole in the wall 8 feet away. Makes me worried for if I get a flat in the middle of nowhere, there's no way I could get it back on
