Agrippa didn't care that he was in the background. He didn't resent being Number Two.
And for this, until he died? He remained Number One in his friend Octavian's eyes.

Agrippa has always been one of my "favorite Roman's. He's got that "the stone that breaks the waves" type of toughness to him that inherently appeals to Anglo Saxon values.
Just a solid, loyal, competent dude.

Looking through some of the old Epochs and found Agrippa. On the point of his loyalty. He reached as far as he could under the social system. In history a number of leaders favoured competent men like this. They weren't a threat.

I think the loyalty of agrippa is much more to Octavian specifically, rather than a feeling of subservience to nobility as a whole. Something missed here was the reason that agrippa became fanatically loyal to Octavian. Agrippa had an older brother who had fought Ceasar, got captured, and then pardoned. His brother had then turned on Ceasar again and was fleeing, and Ceasar only pardons once. It was Octavian who had made the plea for agrippa's brother to be pardoned again, and Ceasar is said to have been more moved by the loyalty of Octavian for his friend than he was by the case for the brother, though Ceasar did spare the brother again.
Agrippa had absolute loyalty because Octavian was probably the only one who would ever risk his standing with the Most powerful man in Rome to help him like that. This is also possibly a reason why Ceasar began to view Octavian as a possible heir. He seemed to surround himself with people who would cover his deficiencies, and he had a mutual loyalty with them, meaning that they wouldn't just betray him when the winds shift because they had bonds far deeper than just political convenience

Completely right, they were brothers in all but genetics. Agrippa exhumed the kind of loyalty I want to emulate. (They did mention his personal loyalty, but it was short)

      I completely agree.
That kind of loyalty is a rare thing and even more so when speaking of the Roman elite.
I wonder if Agrippa had any aspirations to be emperor or if he was content with his place beside Octavian as a trusted friend and ally.

@@MarcusAgrippa390 I think Agrippa was more interested in getting more projects and assignments. Reading on him and how he turned down every attempt Augustus made to celebrate and glorify him, Agrippa never came across as a gloryhound. He just liked getting shit built and he preferred to let his friend take all the glory if it meant he could build and do stuff without having to dabble in the messy politics which was Octavian's specialty.

Octavian wouldn't have enjoyed his success from defeating Marc Anthony to ruling Rome for decades without Agrippa. He was the mobster hitman, trusted advisor, fearless military leader and personal bodyguard for Octavian in one. person. An amazing man.

Yes, this mobster, sinister and secret mood was very present in their group, including Livia Druzilla and that guy that people say was gay. It is amazing that an amazing man dies of a fever. We never know what happens next.

Agrippa didn’t let his ego or pride get the better of him a downfall of a lot of nobility. No doubt a result of his humble origins and probably one of the main reasons Octavian trusted him so Implicitly

Sounds like aristocratic genetics are closely related to aristocratic epigenetics.

Was "Augustus" in some kind of love with Agrippa ?
I would like to know when and how Agrippa died.

    • @Borderose
      @Borderose Před 8 měsíci +2

In a way. They were in a pretty solid bromance. _That's it._
They were good mates. They both wouldn't stop trying to cast more honor and glory on the other. Agrippa refused several honors multiple times and Augustus kept insisting he get more. When Agrippa died, suddenly of a fever gone bad, Augustus was visibly heartbroken and insisted that Agrippa's ashes be intered in his mausoleum rather than the one Agrippa built for himself. Augustus' eulogy can be summed up as him basically saying his friend was the friggin champ of champs and one of the best Romans who ever lived. He then chastised the senators for looking down on him for his poor background. Augustus tells them that Agrippa, even dead, is still worth more to him than all the senators combined alive.
Augustus took care of Agrippa's family after his death. Most of the following Emperors in the Julio-Claudian dynasty are actually as much or more Agrippa's descendants as they are Augustus'.
