Sargon, you are quite right in that the times of the Diadochi would make a phenomenal television series. Unfortunately, modern TV would consider such a series NOT diverse enough, not feminist enough, not transgender enough, not.....the fact that it is historical and true, not relevant!
I beg to differ, the Wars of the Diadochi is the perfect setting for a modern tv adaptation. Although Hellenic society in general was rather patriarchal, this period still features a surprising amount of feminist elements.
The ancient sources mention several very talented, ruthless and often heroic (or in modern terms: strong and independent) women in leadership positions: Cynane (badass Illyrian warrior-princess and half-sister of Alexander, fought on the front lines and died gloriously in battle), Caeria (Illyrian warrior-queen slain in battle by Cynane), Eurydice II (daughter of Cynane, raised to be badass like her mum), Olympias (self-explanatory), Roxana (ditto), Arsinoe II (co-Pharao of Egypt and thrice Olympic chariot race champion), Phila (highly respected, virtuous and intelligent daughter of Antipater), Stratonice (scheming, war-inciting daughter of Antiochus), and many many more.
The period is also highly diverse. Alexander conquered an empire spanning three continents and as a result had access to the manpower of many different peoples. The armies especially employed mercenary units from all over the world, such as Nubian archers, Bactrian cavalrymen and Indian elephant riders. With some creative liberty (while still maintaining historical authenticity) individuals from such units could be expanded upon to have more leading roles. Obviously many women of the conquered peoples were also taken as noble wives/consorts and as such could feature prominently in the palace and court intrigues.
Love your contributions to Lotus Eaters. Your historical talks are my favorite part of the channel. I know I'm not alone, either. Hope your personal channel continues to grow. I didn't know you had a personal channel until I saw you talking with Drinker. I'm now going through your old videos to color my day a little brighter.
Thank you. Very kind of you to say. 🙂
The best way to view Pyrrhus in my opinion, is as a historical Achilles...he's the closest thing there has been to that character in historic times...
This is a pyrrhic podcast
Indeed. Indeed.
Did they do it? Yes. What did it cost?
_Everything._
I used to enjoy a game on Steam called Steel Ocean, and whenever I posthumously sunk an enemy ship or rammed them and sank, I always posted "PYRRHIC VICTORY!!!!!"
Finally
Came back to rewatch for the 4th time haha. Whenever I think I Pyrrhus in battle, I'm reminded of the beginning of Macbeth where he is described as a demon and is swinging his sword so hard and so fast and cutting through so many people that his sword is steaming!!!
Finally, been waiting for this since the last one! 🥳
Whens part 2 👀
@@empyrealcultist1992 Working on it, Bro. Probably ready by the end of this weekend, or possibly mid week.
@@HistoryBro sweet, thanks for letting me know.

I discovered this channel because od lotus eaters. Good stuff guys.
Bro, you have the best channel on CZcams.
This episode is amazing, i just can't wait to see what you talk about next.
Cheers, buddy. Really appreciate the kind comments.

When Lorgar praises you, it is wrong.
Even if your content is amazing.
Lorgar taints it.
Sargon: "They should make a TV series out of the Diadochi, but they won't cuz they suck." :D Truer words...
I'm just writing this here because I happen to be watching it. Today my father is 60 years. I am almost 30 years. Time marches too quickly.
A Hannibal one would be awesome. Also, just commenting for algorithm.
The same paragraph in Plutarch that describes Pyrrhus' false teeth also tell of his healing powers, willingness to cure people from any social class, and his magic toe which survived the funeral pyre.
“Pyrrhus had terrible teeth or terrible orthadontia.”
Two British men are sympathetic. 😂
Lol
1:25 Those are the most terrifying gnomes I have ever seen.
Thank you. Love listening to you guys.
Cheers muchly.
Big big love, History Broski!
Cheers, man.
I know you guys usually do people from antiquity, but I'd love to have you guys do one on Robert Guiscard and the Norman adventurers and mercenaries in South Italy. That's been an obsession of mine lately and is by far the more interesting of the Norman conquests.
If you want a REALLY good game about the Diadochi, you should take a look at Field of glory: Empires
It's a grand strategy that goes from 10 years after the death of Alexander up until the end of the Punic Wars
Can't wait for part 2!
I'm on it. :-)
1:15:00 conquer the world in self defense
This inspired me to play a DEI modded Total War Rome 2 plsythrough as Pyrrhus hard going fighting Rome and Carthage but got Greece on good terms and conquered the boot of Italy so could be worse, rome and Carthage are finally at war so that's helping
Keep these coming bro , really appreciate them!
My pleasure :-)
@@HistoryBro Don't worry about going in to detail , we all love the detail! cram as much in as possible in my view!
Rome are like Egypt in Rome Total War. You keep stack wiping their armies yet they just raise another army
Dude he said Demetrius loves the Milfs. I fucking died . This is 👌
All Pyrrhus needed was a katana.
In that Storm, Pyrrhus actually falls of the ship. But then he pretends like he intended to do that and so swims to shore.😅
I to have thought the diadochi wars would make an amazing tv series
The vast majority of the historical Kingdom of Macedon lies within modern Greek territory. The Slavs in former Yugoslavia latched onto the sliver that lies in their country, called their country Macedonia, took the Vergina Sun as their flag and symbol, and built an Alexander the Great Airport. It's nothing but LARPing.
comradesomo Neither slavs nor greeks have to do with Macedonia ore Epirus.Southern parts of their territories were given to Greece by the great powers after the first world war.Alexander and Pyrrhus were epirotes,so illyrians.Herodotus and all ancient authors considered them barbarians. The distorsion of history by greeks aims to justifie the unjust occupation of these territories by them.
I am STILL shocked that a pyrric victory has nothing to do with a pyre, which is a way of burning bodies or victims... I thought it was a reference to "saving the place by burning it all down."
If you hadn't misspelled pyrrhic, you wouldn't have thought that. :D
Pyrrhus was promised an army of 250,000 Spartans at Tarentum and found a bunch of lazy hacks. They discredited the name of Sparta.
Subbed
Cheers!
Very cool

Few hundred years to go yet, matey. But I'm hoping we get there, for sure.
Dia- Doh- Ki but I think the pronunciation depends on where youre from
I always wanted to see someone do a vid of what happened after alexander the great died, and the war of secession that happened afterwards.
Glad to be of assistance.
Kings and Generals has a good series on the wars of the diadochi. Goes a little more in depth than they do here, particularly on the battles.
Hey man, I love your videos and enjoy just binging them while I play games. If I could shamelessly ask a favor; could you make playlists for all the series' you've made? Thanks, and keep up the great work!
Heya, Bro. Sure. Thanks for reminding me. I believe the Mao and Nixon ones already are, but I need to make the Drake one a playlist too. In fact, I'll do that right now.
EDIT - Bosh. Done. Bunch o' playlists on there now. And thanks for watching/listening. :-)
Punic Wars next please
Budda-Bing! Right on the money... I believe that is exactly what we'll do next. :-)
@@HistoryBro Noice. The Roman Republic is so fascinating.
Pyrrhus of Epirus is the Man!! I think he bit off more than he could chew tho. Did he have to attack everyone around him?
Do you do corrections on these? Sometimes you guys aren't too sure on some of the details.. I love the video editing.
I am convinced historybro is Rory the chelsea fan who guests on true geordie
Nobody has ever seen me and Rory in the same room at the same time, confirming we are indeed two different people... That's just a fact.
Is William the Conqueror a direct ancestor of Richard the Lionhearted?
Any plans to redo these talks on Epochs?
Battle as sport makes much sense. Look at 44:39 and tell me you don't see a football coach's gameplan. "You keep the enemy stalled, you flank". We used to train "soldiers" for our teams (from local areas) but now we hire "mercenaries" (trade from afar). Best coaches, known widely as if generals, the best footballers, heralded like warriors.
Ive always pronounced it (Die-Odd-Ick-Key)
I thought Pyrrhus cut the barbarians head in half, not his whole body.
Everyone knows katanas cut steel
LET THE FLAME WARS BEGIN!
Katanas are sharper than lightsabers. Fakt.
that's why Samurai wore wooden armor... the swords are gonna go right through it anyway.
"Apart from Sparta..." Damn! They were really horrible people but NOBODY wanted to fuck with the Spartans. That is so damned impressive. For centuries stuff happened in that area... apart from Sparta.
No Graeco-Bactrians, those guys were hard.
It's an interesting culture. Greek style statues of the Buddha are amazing.
Pyrrhus looks like the chaddest Jonah Hill in history. But anyway, on the cutting in two, I think the swords of the era were not bad cutters: these are steel weapons designed for cutting, and modern tests done by enthusiasts show they could chop stuff pretty darn well, especially as far as one-handed, forward-balanced weapons - I think there hasn't really been any significant improvements since the falcata or the kopis style design. That being said, I don't think Plutarch was there when this went down, so the accounts can easily be exaggerated. On the other hand, I imagine he still killed the guy very easily, with no hesitation or effort. The head is a well-known target, especially if you're pissed - just chopped him right in the face, making the difference in fighting strength really obvious...
If be willing to try to make a similar cut with a period accurate sword. I already planned on making/buying one of that age, so a few pic carcasses are just a formality.
The ads nearly make this unwatchable 😥
No, Katana is not the best sword. The “best sword” is all about the context of how your using it and what you are fighting against, how and what it’s made of. Yes, you can cut a person in two. Funny enough that is exactly how Japanese used to tested their swords. By cutting through MULTIPLE human bodies. If the body/person is unarmored and your blade is a chopping weapon like a Greek Kopis it is very possible to cut through a person on the battlefield. You would be surprised. Once you cut most of the way through the parts will pull themselves apart anyway. Also I imagined the cut beginning at the collar bone, across the chest and down to the groin or hip. Not directly on the head.
"Context"...you're clearly a viewer of Matt Easton's Scholagladiatoria YT channel, as am I.
@@MrVvulf i am indeed ahah cheers bud
Commercials every three f***ing minutes or so is way too much.
Wait. What? Really?.... No no no, I'm changing that right now. I never set it to that. CZcams keeps changing stuff without me knowing... This is really annoying to me. I never wanted ads to interrupt the flow of the conversation. Is it really every few minutes? I didn't even know that was possible... Right, today I'm gonna go through all my vids and make sure there are no mid-roll ads at all... Thanks for letting me know.
Hey purpleslog - FYI, I went in there, and yes, they'd put 12 ads in first hour of this. 12! That's crazy. Really annoying to me... I've removed all mid-roll ads from these now... Will be checking the rest of my content today... Again, thanks for letting me know... If you're watching my channel in future (and I very much hope this hasn't put you off) please do fee l free to shout if it starts throwing in loads of ads again. Cheers.
