  • In this video, we explore the intriguing question: how do dogs really see us? Many dog owners ponder whether their furry friends view them as parents, family, or perhaps even as big dogs. We dive deep into the world of canine perception to understand if dogs see us as their masters or if the concept of an "alpha" really applies in the way they relate to us. This video brings together insights from animal behaviorists and canine psychologists to shed light on these fascinating aspects of our relationship with dogs.
    We also consider the emotional connections dogs form with humans. Do dogs see us as mere owners, or is there a deeper bond, perhaps seeing us as a mother or father figure? Through various studies and expert interviews, we explore how dogs interpret our actions and how this affects their behavior and interactions with us. Join us as we uncover whether your dog sees you as just another member of the pack or if they regard you with the same affection and respect typically reserved for a parent.

    I love your videos, I almost listen to you everyday. For the first time I've come across something you've said that I don't agree with: recognizing themselves in the mirror. Just like you've said in the past, dogs can learn things over time.
    I say this because I currently own a staffy that is dog aggressive and we have mirrors in our home. Yes she at first tried to attack the mirror and confusingly went behind, but she worked out it was herself. She pays no attention now, no fur heckles as she walks by. It's not just acceptance of familiarity either. This is backed up when we go out and she sees her reflection in other places, shops, friends homes, even villas while on holidays where she sees a mirror for the first time. She absolutely knows it's just her.
    At 11 years of age she is still dog aggressive, I've never been able to help her calm. She herself was attacked by a smaller dog when she was 2 that left a scar to this day on her face and emotionally.
    She loves people though and is very smart, watching me like a hawk for cues in how to behave. When another dog comes onto the scene, though, she loses it.
    I do get it though that you refer to research, it all that we can do. But in this case, scientists and Observers are not conducting tests with dogs who have learned, and/or not allowing the time for them to learn.
    I believe most dogs who can learn to focus on their 'person' can learn about mirrors if given the time to show them.

    Our first dog kinda understood mirrors I believe. When we stood with him in front of the mirror and showed a treat (or one of his toys), he'd instantly turn around correctly to where one was holding the food. Tried this when we were cooking too so that the smell didn't give it away. Not sure if he really understood that he was the dog he was seeing but he never tried to interact with his own reflection after the very first time. Our current dog doesn't get it. At least not yet. :)

    Maybe your dog doesn't recognize himself in a mirror, my dog does. Once he got really high and barked at himself in the mirror but give him a break.

    • @OnlyMe-uk6nh
      @OnlyMe-uk6nh Před měsícem

      Doesn’t mean he recognised himself, just that he thought there was another animal in front of him. Now if he walked around the mirror to try and find the other animal, then that would show more intelligence and if he connected something to do with the animal in the mirror with himself (such as a particular movement) and then kept repeating it to see the connection ….. then that is closer to the dog “recognising himself”. Other wise it’s just an animal thinking it sees another animal and that’s common.

      What do you mean "he got high" ?

    • @sherrimooney8653
      @sherrimooney8653 Před 25 dny

      A dog doesn't get "high" on his own! Somebody has to get him high. I'm not judging you for your lifestyle, I myself wish they would legalize marijuana in my state of North Carolina. But a dog can't consent & I don't know about you, but I don't know enough about dogs physical and/ emotional make up to know what pot, or any other drugs, do to our fur babies. That is reason enough for me to choose to get my dog high

    • @OnlyMe-uk6nh
      @OnlyMe-uk6nh Před 25 dny

      @@sherrimooney8653 That’s kinda assuming. A dog doesn’t need to actually be given drugs to get high, sometimes they find substances on their own. Just like with children, you can’t watch them 24/7.

    A mirror test for dogs is utter nonsense. Or do we decide on human self awareness depending if you can smell which one of a couple of urine probes is yours? There is no scientific reason why the eyes should count more than the nose in this context.

    • @barbaramatthews4735
      @barbaramatthews4735 Před 26 dny

      But can you smell your own facts? I blame mine on the dog.
      I get your point. Dogs know toys, blankets, food bowls, and sometimes furniture that belong to them. If someone else be it dog or human, uses their items, they know it.
