My beagle is an angel. The best dog ever. Not a barker or obnoxious. She’s gentle and listens fairly well. Definitely food motivated but I would take a beagle any day. Beagles forever!

My aunt got a beagle mix 3 weeks ago....he is 9 weeks old, and we are having the hardest time getting him to stop gnawing on us. We have *sooo* many toys & teething rings....even ones that go in the freezer. We’ve been doing the thing where we divert his biting by handing him a chew toy, but it doesn’t seem to be working. He still wants to gnaw on our fingers, and he is not gentle about it either. My God, spend help. 🤣

Beagles are treat monsters. I’ve owned a beagle since I was a little kid and found that it’s not a good idea to reinforce good behavior with treats. Beagles are very smart dogs and will realize very quickly that they get a treat for being good. Which isn’t always a bad thing but soon you’re beagle is going to expect to get a treat all the time just because it didn’t get into trouble. Beagles do have a tendency to gain weight if they don’t get proper exercise on a regular basis. Loading your dog up with treats is not beneficial to their health. It’s a much better idea to reinforce good behavior with showing your beagle ultimate affection. If he’s a good boy and behaves himself I tell him what a good boy he is and rub his belly, his sweet spot.

My beagle is 9 and we haven't really had too many problems except the excessive barking/howling. For anyone that wants to get a beagle, once they are trained well, they are amazing dogs and (like most) even can detect anxiety sometimes. When I am anxious, she will either lay beside me or on me to distract me from it (but sometimes she does it for attention too, but it is very comforting).

    • @thegt3clickcrash329
      @thegt3clickcrash329 Před 3 lety +7

Beagles are incredible dogs. They can sense when we’re frustrated, angry, happy, sad , ANXIOUS, and so many other emotions. I notice if I’m depressed and sad and look at my beagle he is literally in the exact same mood as myself. They are great dogs and could probably teach a lot of humans what it means to be loyal and show unconditional love.

They are also super friendly. My beagles only growled at me once and that was when I accidentally laid on his paw. He did try to nip me as well but I think that was just a reflex from the pain. Anyway he’s super good around children as well, he knows to be gentle with them even if they are constantly grabbing his face and slapping him like young toddlers tend to do. He’s also well natured around my cats too but will chase them in the garden if he spots them outside.

GREAT VIDEO!! We have a “Beaglier”, Beagle and Cavalier King Charles mix - Macie Harper. She has a lot of qualities of both breeds; however it is the Beagle side that drives us all nuts!! We worked with a trainer for several months and had her mostly under control, but it is the barking that is still the problem. Our trainer said we had our hands full because in her 40 years of training, Macie Harper, was the smartest dog she had ever seen. In our first visit, 3 hours, Macie had “mastered” commands that usually take 2 weeks to 2 months for other dogs!! We KNEW we were in trouble. We kept up training until our Trainer moved. We are not a diligent as we should be so the barking is an issue. I will TRY the “let them bark until they realize you will not respond” idea if my nerves and eardrum hold up. Lots of good suggestions. THANK YOU!

I had a beagle, great dog, loved kids, full of energy, I trip out that I see these videos and people live in apartments and have a beagle. My Beagle loved to run and roam the yard, he caught mice and possums. He would bark and howl at night only if a critter was in the yard. These dogs are great companions but they were bread to hunt so that if a person doesn’t have the energy to try and keep up a beagle may not be the bread for them. Only downside for me was allergies, vet bills were a bit expensive.

The whole pulling on the leash thing was a horrible experiance for me. Especially if there were people or other dogs around. I finally caved and got a shock collar, one with a beep and a shock and I never had to use the shock. My beagle learned to listen to my commands with just the beep and now she can roam freely outside without a leash. :)

@@vioricabalica4854 Haha yeah they can get pretty crazy. The brand I have is Sportdog. So it has a beep setting and the buzzing setting. The beep is just a beep in their ears so you say a command and beep it and they will get accustomed to hearing just the beep so you never have to use the shock. It really helps. When I first started using it I kept it on my beagle all day because it takes some time to get used to.

I've had a beagle for 11 years. We use the halti harness for waking/hiking. It's magic, and she does great even in the woods. She never had a furniture eating issue, thank goodness! She does chew through literally every toy. We use the kongs and hard plastic toys only, but it's rough for me bc I love buying her the stuffys. We use a shock collar for nighttime barking... but she has figured out a way to use her crate to get it off. 🤷‍♀️ she spends the time trying to get it off instead of barking though. Mission accomplished.

That way, if he starts pulling, the harnassen will tighten around his throat, which they DO NOT LIKE AT ALL. The transformation is enormous. They will stop pulling and walk by your side

I adopted a Beagle in 2015 when he was 4. He's now 11+. The only issues I've had with him is A. He's never been 100% house-trained, but I have a carpet steam-cleaner and accidents he's had were cleaned quickly, and B. I cannot stop him from eating poop outside - other dogs' poop, goose poop, rabbit poop, my other dogs' poop... It's really frustrating. I've tried everything short of a shock collar or a muzzle. I would really rather no pursue either of those options (both suggested by vets). He was a rescue from Kentucky and I learned through the adoption agency that he came from a home where he was neglected and fed/given water when his "people" remembered to do so. He was also abused physically and left outside all the time. I know some of this has caused his obsession/need to eat poop, but he's been doing this for 7+ years now and I don't know what to do. Any suggestions are welcome.

It just burns my heart whenever I hear such stories. Such people have a special place in hell reserved for them. Anyway, I would recommend putting your dog under 100% supervision for 2 to 4 weeks. I know this seems impossible, but you could maybe hire someone or ask your family members when you are available. And when ever he tried to pee inside the house just make him stop and take him outside. And whenever he tries to eat poop, firmly say NO and when he tries to eat it, gently tug his leash and say NO. for couple of minutes, take him to the same spot where there's poop and see what he does. If he tries to eat it, tug and redirect. If he doesn't give him a treat. Try to prevent potty eating for a month straight. Let me know how it goes.

Poo eating is a sign of something missing in his diet. Try a higher quality dog food

Yeah our two year old boy beagle never really barks, if your walking then he may bark at the colour red for some reason but it’s very rare, I actually wish he would be a little more vocal but as long as he’s happy, he fits in very well with our family and we want a lemon coloured one in the future so he’s got a friend.

One thing about beagles, no matter the size, is to understand that all breeds of beagles are hunting dogs. They are sense of smell oriented, and like most hunting breeds that are sense of smell (olfactory oriented) oriented, they can and will follow smells of different animals or things they find interesting or curious. They often use their bark and howling to say “I’ve found something, come here (please) and look what I found!” Beagles can become overweight if not exercised per the breed’s requirements, and they can like the outdoors, whether in a yard or on a farm, etc.. Beagles tend to pee a lot. When outside, they use pee as a marker to leave a trail to follow back where they came from, or back home. So housebreaking can be more time consuming and harder than some other breeds. And being social, they can run with other beagles afield (like a pack of hunting dogs on a hunt). Being a hunting breed, hunters can have them trained or (train them themselves), to hunt game such as rabbits, squirrels, and other game animals, and will either corner, force the game to circle, or tree an animal they are sniffing and “hunting down”. Beagles are fairly high energy dogs so please recognize these beautiful breeds as active, loving friendly dogs that will need a lot of exercise and some outdoor time to use their nose! 🐶

I had a wonderful beagle named Buddy & I think he was perfect. He never chewed up anything & he didn’t bark allot or howl. The only problem was he grabbed food if it was near him & he ate his poop if he was quicker than him. All you are talking about is not always true. I miss him so much & this dog looked just like Buddy.

All the problems mentionned are due to boredom and lack of exercise. Beagles are not really an apartment dog. And by exercise I mean letting them nose at everything. On a walk, be patient and let them use their nose until they are satisfied enough to move further.

Beagles are so motivated and so easy to train. Like any dog they will find something to do if you don't give them something
to do, or don't keep them exercised.
Reinforce what you want. Ignore what you don't. Train an alternative behavior. Keep them exercised, most dogs need to expend energy.
