I think this is why I like Prog musicians so much. They take their music very seriously but not themselves. Nick is the epitome of all that is good and great about this genre.
A prog musician?, not exactly what I’d call nick. Don’t you know he has a past association with people involving haircuts! But he is a serious bass player if not such a serious person 😂 and as I’m sure you’re aware, prog musicians are VERY VERY SERIOUS! 😂
I frequently come back to watch this one,. Being a big fan going back to the 80s, never ceases to amaze me the eclectic stuff he cooks up. Not just a ridiculously talented musician/songwriter, but he crosses more boundaries than most musicians, period!
Great playing, great song. "Buy and buy until it makes you sick" ...we are obsessed with "stuff". I am just as guilty as the next person. Thumbs very up!
I had never heard of Steven Wilson until I watched this awesome video, and now I'm deep into his back catalogue. Many thanks to you, Mr. Beggs. It is a joy to watch you play.
Uhm yeah, what the hell is this music? Never heard it. However I see what Ghost ripped off. Nicks hilarious & obviously a beast bassman which is how I/you reading this ended up here. Big ❤️
I'm so freaking old, that I do remember Kajagoogoo. This track could have easily fit in their catalogue! Thanks Nick for all these years of good music.
I was a little kid when Kajagoogoo was a band and I never knew they had a bass god until a month ago when I paid to see Berlin and Culture Club but got blown away by Howard Jones who I never heard a song from ever and his bassist. I was captivated by Nick. Couldn't take my eyes off him.
Nick Beggs you had me at Too Shy all those years ago. For me one of my all time favourite bass players right up there with my hero Mark King. And still cool AF.
Even though I have seen Mark King play some of the bass parts of his bands work, I always think it's some kind of trick. It's that unbelievable. And when Beggs said to Wilson, "I've got a great idea for a Chapman Stick part for your song about a collector" even Wilson was blown away, NOT an easy feat, and the part was accepted immediately for the live version in the supporting tour. Let me add that the Chapman Stick is a VERY difficult instrument to play. Oh, and by the way, Beggs is the best instructor I have EVER worked with, bar none. Easily in the company of Levin, King and Pastorius. Thanks for your consideration.
I love this guy, ever since seeing him with Steve Hacket wearing a kilt, sitting on the floor and pounding his Taurus pedals with his fists. He's a very animated, talented and entertaining musician. Then he pulls out the Chapman Stik & kills that too! The pony tails & white sun glasses are an interesting touch as well. Hard to believe he was a GooGoo. Thanks Nick for being you.
So this guy plays a monster bass riff back in the eighties, then drops off my musical radar until a few nights ago when I'm comparing old Genesis tracks played by later Genesis incarnation or Steve Hackett. There's Nick doing a phenomenal job with Steve, and slapping myself round the head thinking "must do better at following these uber talented people from ages ago" because talent is talent and it endures. Sorry for not keeping up with your output Nick, you're a legend and I've only just found out... *Slopes off hanging head in shame*
Such an amazing musician. 🎵🎸 His love for what he does shines through every performance.. He deserves the cake...🎂 And to eat it..... Superb...God Bless you Sir... ....❤ 🙏
My wife threw a bra at him while he was playing the stick at a SW concert. It fell right next to his pedalboard, he saw it, laughed and didn’t miss a note nor a beat of the song….GOAT
Brother Nick is creative as hell. The Too Shy 1983 bassline is still kickin my ass to sing n play. Jesus Christ ! what was he thinkn when he wrote it? = "Im gonna write a line that will take years off the life of anyone who tries to master it". Well thnx a lot Nick. Ive been workin on this nonstop while making my Final Arrangements at the same time...lol. Nick Beggs for President !!!!!!
I recently saw an analysis of his bass line in Too Shy. It'd been years since I listened to that song and it was the first time I could see and hear what an amazing and underrated bassist Nick Beggs really was back then!
I Took my mother on long hall walk through the city of Pretoria in South Africa back in the 80's actually looking for a Depeche Mode album. I did not even know the name of the group or names of songs and I just kept listing to albums the shops would play on the turn table for me after giving a description. Then someone put Kajagoogoo on the turn table. So I said well I think that is it and my Mother bought the Album. Back home I realized it wasn't Depeche Mode - but I listened to that album over and over and did not regret it an ounce. Good days!!
I love musicians who don't take themselves too seriously, and after listening to a few podcasts featuring Nick, and seeing this video, I think he definitely doesn't - And anyone who even picks up a Chapman Stick is in a different league.
Simply awesome musician. Absolutely effortless in his approach! Incredible chops!! This man has paid his dues in the business…Incredible groove🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻❤️
Haha. Playing serious or jamming you always put a smile on my face. Your a legend Mr Beggs. Thank you for your music over the years. Hope to see you with Howard Jones some time soon.
I remember back in the day I was at Greenbelt Festival late one night in a marquee. Nick Beggs and David Grant did a set and their talent absolutely blew me away. I knew Nick was a brilliant bass player but his vocals were next level too! It was an evening I have never forgotten! 😁
I love Nick and i love Kajagoogoo. It came about a few years after they'd had all their chart success, as i was too into my rock & metal at that time (although i could see, even then, that Beggsy was a damn talented bass player/muso!). I grew older and (maybe a little) wiser and listened to them more intently and realised that the guys really could play as well as write cool tunes. I was well pleased when Sir Nick of Beggs came over to the dark side though, and planted his flag into the fertile soil of rock/prog etc. as, although i do love all kinds of music these days, in my heart of hearts i will always be firmly in the, shall we say, rockier/louder/more metal end of the spectrum. A true legend, and one of many hero's of mine. Nice one, Nick. Always a pleasure to indulge in anything you have had a part of! 🤟😎
Very good sir! I'm years late, but now noticing how well you play the bass. I just watched some old videos of Kajagoogoo and you stood out with some excellent bass riffs! I enjoyed watching this.
My son persuaded me to go and see SW in Bielefeld 10 years ago. When I got there I couldn’t (eventually) believe SW had recruited my all time favourite bassist (following on from “Too Shy” - one of the greatest bass lines of all time, played with such consummate ease). He was a lot more scrawny than I remembered, and I actually thought he was a female bassist right up to the point that SW revealed him as “Sir Nick Beggs”. There was no mistaking that infectious Beggs smile though.
It’s amazing to think that Nick Beggs played that sophisticated bass line in the Kajagoogoo hit, “Too Shy” ‘way back in 1983 when he was barely 21 years old! His bass MADE that song! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Nick Beggs, what an amazing talent. We were so spoiled in the 80's, he passed me by unnoticed. He is the genuine article and seems like such a wonderful guy. Good on you Nick, keep doing it
Nick is beyond awesome and I love he's pairing up with Steve Wilson. This bass line is amazing, as is Nick's personality and showmanship. But, let's be honest, I can't be the only one horrified by the muffin grease he must be getting on his bass???? 😂
Brilliant! Thanks Nick I like the way you were waiting patiently there for the bass parts to come in filing your nails and stuffing your face that was funny!🙂 Best wishes you are a legend!❤👍
I firmly believe that Nick is one of, if not THE greatest bass player of our generation. What a character also! Just champion! Addendum: This baseline is faintly reminiscent of True Believers by Level 42 in my opinion.
For many years, I have been a fan of your bass guitar playing. Thanks to you, I reached for this instrument in the early years of Kajagoogoo. Your slapping has shown me the way I am following. Thank you for lifetime achievement, both Kajagoogoo, Art Nouveaux, The Mute Gods, Ellis, Beggs and Howard and many others that I could meet. My only regret is that so far I have not been able to learn to play the Chapman Stick. Unfortunately, in my country, this instrument is not very popular and there are no musicians playing it either. Kind regards.
Kids...this is what a legend looks and plays like. Respect.
We are lucky to see him on CZcams ❤
