      loved him in Zappa and Talking Heads. City of Tiny Lights is one of my all time favorite Zappa songs and Remain in Light is THE best Talking Heads album, because of Adrian. His job in Zappa was to play guitar when Zappa sang and to sing when Zappa played guitar. He did both well. And in Talking Heads, Tina and Chris asked him to replace David Byrne! He refused.

  • @escargotomy
    @escargotomy Před rokem +18

    I had the real privilege to see Adrian live with Talking Heads and Crimson in the early 80's in NYC and the things he did with a guitar were truly mind-bending. Here's a guy who throws all the rules out the window and reinvents the instrument. He and Les Claypool are a particularly great match! Saw Primus do the Rush - Farewell to Kings show last year and that was the coolest show I've seen in years.

    Adrian Belew was so far ahead of his time, he's always wound up as one of rock's most underappreciated guitarists. Check out some of his live videos touring with the Talking Heads in '80. He's tearing it up! And, of course, Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love" guitar riff is his. Probably his most well-known piece of work, even if he's rarely given credit. Anyhow, looks like he's having a blast here and sounding great, as always.

But yeah, I cannot stop listening to the Talking Heads' 1980 tour, always keep coming back to it. So much enthusiasm and passion, not to mention the songs, and Belew's guitar just makes everything 10x better!

    Playing with Frank Zappa and Robert Fripp are honors will earned by Belew. I saw King Crimson live in 1995. A stellar group of musicians. Belew is also a great front man. His album "Big Electric Cat" is one of my favorite LP's.

    and that's what was missing from the Fripps latest Crimson group.. I dunno how or why that was the move, but Adrians insane guitar chops are simply too integral to a large chunk of the catalogue

      For the 70ies stuff I think it did not matter that much and the 90ies stuff I did not miss it. But it was kind of odd to have Indiscipline and Neurotica in the way they played it.

      Nope - as RF said - "Young Ade got a bit too big for his boots" and he started to think of the band as his as much as Fripp's. The final straw was when he expected the other musicians in the current incarnation to be treated as salaried sidemen, rather than full partners. He's no loss.

      There are essentially two very different incarnations/visions of King Crimson. Both have created amazing and wonderful music. I am grateful to have seen each of them live and enjoyed their many great recordings over the years. I get it that King Crimson is Robert Fripp's baby, but there is no denying that what Adrian Belew brought to the band was magic and helped to reinvigorate their sound at the time.

      @@doctorp4237 It's hard to imagine a "too big for his boots" attitude when every single time I've seen him onstage, he's the most ego-less performer I've ever seen!
