This is a dream for me. I'm 33 now and discovering beat,three of a perfect pair and is it Thrack (vroom,walking on air,dinosaur) any way at 17 year old finding this music changed my life ❤.
The best thing about a Beato interview is that he never goes for the salacious, or controversial. It's all about the music. You can see how relaxed the musicians are knowing they're not going to be cornered by some rumor or accusation. It's never click bate. We click because we're fans, and respect the format.
...and it's equally kuul that The Band didn't bring up the fact that Rick has quite vocally "sanctioned" Crimson in the past on his Channel. 🙂

His dissonant guitar solo on the live performance of Level Five is my favorite guitar solo of all time, coming ahead of even Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix, which is my close second

I've always thought that Adrian is a highly underrated singer. Everyone knows he's a monster on the guitar, but I've admired his voice for 40 years!
Absolutely. If he was just a singer, and wasn't famous for playing in a band of revered instrumentalists, he would get a lot more plaudits for his vocals.
I wished Rick had asked more about that, in fact... I don't think Adrian was doing a lot of singing in that Takling Heads tour where Fripp and Bruford saw him, so I wonder when and how to was decided that he would be the lead singer of 'Discipline'.
He gave us Discipline. Great writer, singer and guitarist.
A throwback to the Roy Orbison school of crooning.
As to Adrian voice, I went to high school with him, he’s always had a great voice, anything he hears he can sing or play, always could.
@@Electricshrock With T-Heads, Adrian did some back-up harmonies. With Frank Zappa, Adrian famously did "City of Tiny Lights", so it was apparent he could sing.

To be fair he's been singing Frame By Frame on almost every solo show in the last fifteen years and MK would also ocassionally make appearences. But yeah, exquisite singer.
No you're not, and I have no clue what all has to be wrong with your head to think it's even possible for you to be the only one! BTW, his voice and having written the stuff to it is what made Frame by Frame, and a whole lot of other songs so freaking good.
Did anyone take note of what Steve Vai said at 59:13? "You choose how you want to feel and then you decide the story attached to it". This guy is more than a guitarist/artist/performer. He's like a spiritual master. No joke. He always has these interesting philosophies he shares in his interviews. The guy has some depth. And on a more pertinent level, cool that Adrian put this together. I hope they come to my town.

Its a lesson to up and coming musicians. People think attitude gets you places... Yeah it will... in the short term... but being humble. respectful and honest is going to put you into a LONG career.

I hope they capture the spirit of the originals but don't limit themselves to reproduction and let their creativity come out. But given who it is I doubt that's a big worry.
ANYTHING? I wouldn't let them play ACDC or The Ramones. But to be fair, i don't know anyone who can cover those two, interestingly enough everyone fails at that.
Honestly I kinda wish they'd try making something original instead of wheeling out the oldies, a mix of the oldies and some new improvisational stuff would perfect in fact

Adrian’s explanation of how the poly meters of the guitar parts in Frame By Frame loop is brilliant.
I was playing bass in this new band & this night we were in London staying at this producer's mews house & the tv was on. King Crimson playing Frame by Frame, it had only just come out. I've never felt so inadequate as a musician. They were just on another level & Bellew singing while playing those time signatures, just wow.
Those three 80's King Crimson albums are pure magic. I will never forget the first time that I heard Elephant Talk as a kid back in the 80's.

I did an album with Steve Hackett band singer Nad Sylvan a few years ago and Tony played on several songs. A legend.

From 1988 to 1989, Jeff Buckley played in a band called The Wild Blue Yonder that included future Tool drummer Danny Carey and bassist John Humphrey.
Danny is so quiet, respectful and appears to be in total awe.
That's the magic of a Master of their craft!

Rick Beato is 61, and he's the baby of this group. Rick, Steve Vai, and Danny Carey are of similar ages, but the other two are each more than 10 years older. Adrian Belew is 74, and Tony Levin is 77.
I would never guess that Danny is 62, but then again, I would never guess that I'm 60.

I agree. However, I'd prefer to see Belew in Fripp's role as the creative leader - doing things HIS way, in other words. Belew has such a great balance of accessibility and weirdness.
To me King Crimson is a British band but this is an all American line up????
There's probably 200 years of combined studio, touring and musicianship in that group. Crazy.
And if they stand on each other's shoulders they're at least 25 feet tall.

Check out Rick's one-on-one interview with Danny. He explains how he had a studio before Tool began, and he played with Jeff, as well as Carole King and others. I highly recommend the Danny interview.

@charlesboucher9533 agree partially, he made sure every member present got involved directing them the right question at the right time. Then they spoke their mind, the interview feels perfect, zero awkwardness. This takes a lot of intelligence and personal touch. But I agree he knows music and knows how to let them speak instead of interrupting them, and he knows music on such a high level that whatever technicality they go on about he can comment and ask further questions to keep each subject going.
I agree. Rick shows the difference a specialist can make when conducting an interview. He is a great musician and producer in his own right and knows just what to ask to make musician feel comfortable.
An all-star lineup being emulated by another all-star lineup. Getting Danny Carey to play Bruford’s parts was sheer genius. This is going to be a fun show to watch.

Man, the older Steve's body gets the younger his soul becomes, I swear. He's just as excited as the rest of us, as are Adrian, Danny, and Tony. What a lineup, what incredible music, can't wait for this!
Steve and his wife sat behind me and my mom at a Todd Rundgren show at the Wiltern in Los Angeles about a year and a half ago. He was just as stocked as anyone else in the room. Could tell he was having a great time.
I've not really known a lot about Steve Vai other than his guitar-god status (I'm not a guitarist). But I agree that he seems like a really cool, genuine person. I loved his take on the new social media landscape -- "I think it's important that you choose how to take it." That flexibility and the conscious choice to move forward and continue to learn really impressed me. @@gerimayawhyte154
Steve is a beautiful person. I've learned so much from listening to him talk about music and life.
I admire Vai's sense of humility ... not that he doesn't have confidence but that he understands and appreciates music at that level of mastery is deeply personal and inimitable and not a competition of who "better".
They're not easy parts. He'd have been happier if Fripp had phoned him and asked him to be the replacement for Belew in a band because then he'd only have to make a few elephant noises and sing - although the singing is sublime.
I think that sense of humility comes from his formative experiences playing with Frank who never let anyone in his band get a big head.

Not to mention that Jakko is a well established artist already, and he had even done a project with Fripp and Mel Collins before joining the reformed Crimson.
@@Miguel-un1vh I understand that to a point, but I also think that if that was as true as Fripp kind of claims, this band wouldn't be happening. The 80's band kept the brand alive for Fripp, but Adrian is clearly the reason those records happened. Kind of dichotomous, but within that I feel Adrians thumbprint on Crimson from 1981 on was important enough that it motivates my take on this point.
@@MarceloKatayama Schizoid band was good and all, but Jakko's standing in all of this isn't that of someone who wrote a note of the relevant material, vs Adrian who's the primary song writer of 6 studio records. It's hard to separate him from that. Crimson always had been about doing the next thing until it was time to do 1972 again (which was fine, but at the expense of Adrian didn't work for me- not that anyone cares what I think about this in any real sense.. hah).
Been a huge 80’s Crimson Fan all my life. I’m super impressed by just listening to Steve. What an articulate cool guy. Can’t wait from hear him join the musical discussion on stage.

If you didn't work, then there was no room for you in any of Zappa's bands! So anyone who ended up on stage with him can probably say they had to work hard for it.

@@talastra I'm subscribed to Rick. I love TOOL so seeing Danny Carey in the video caught my attention. Past three days have been full of Beat, Three of a Perfect Pair, and Discipline. This stuff is sick!
@@MoviesNStuff Oh come on. The "free jazz" noodling in Moonchild is awful. Islands is not worthy of King Crimson. No, I happen like ThrakAttaKc. Cadence and Cascade, while contrasting, is dull; so is the analogous song on the next (or previous) album. Book of Saturday is pretty marginal. Earthbound is again unworthy. The last album had some snoozers. Talking Drum and Sheltering Sky are merely okay.
You might notice a pattern. I don't like when KC attempt schmaltz. There are plenty of other bands for that, and ones who do it much better.
That said, the 40th Anniversary USA (with Starless and Fracture) is peak music to my ears. The ProjeKcts are super-cool (not as much 2, why put Adrian on drums), Level 5 is supririsngly good. As I've already noted, I really dig ProjeKct X. One must listen to Fripp's Exposure also.

To introduce yourself to the original Crimson (people will says Larks, Starless, Red), just listen to a 40th or 30th Anniversary version of the live album USA (one with Starless and Fracture on it). A live album as great as Van der Graaf Generator's Vital, and Kansas' Two for the Show; if I had to have only one KC, it would be this (or ProjeKct X, which is probably a strange choice for fans). For some other songs, find the live version of Level 5 online, Happy With What you Have to be Happy With, Dinosaur, the albums ProjeKcts 1, 3, and 4 (especially 3 and 4), and ProjeKct X (the whole thing, not just the song "Heaven and Hell"), Robert Fripp's solo album Exposure, the song "Carrying No Cross" by UK (with KC alum), the album The Repercussions of Angelic Behavior (Fripp and Bill Rieflin), there's stuff that Bruford & Levin did called "BLUE" (with Mark Isham, cornet player, I think, and David Torn?!?), Fripp also solos on some early Van der Graaf Generator, and one should always listen to VDGG (though I'm biased).
When you listen to Discipline, you get a sense of how influential it was on Tool’s sound. Amazing album and way ahead of its time.
My older brother liked King Crimson, and one day in 1982 we found the Discipline album in a record store and he bought it without knowing anything about it. We listened to it an immediately fell in love with it. It's still one of my all time favorite albums and it never aged for me. It was so far ahead of it's time and to me it is timeless.

The 80's lineup of KC is one of my favorite sounds and I was incredibly dismayed when I heard their weren't any tour dates in Washington, but I am still very pleased BEAT is a thing now.

I've met him twice. First back stage at RTF in 2008 and in the lobby at the Wiltern for Todd Rundgren. Super nice guy. Funny, we talked about Ultravox. I was surprised he liked them.

I saw Adrian Belew touring in the 80s in Victoria BC. He had many pedals, multiple guitars with different tuning and it was incredible watching him play. I got to hang out with him a bit after the gig and he's such a great down to earth guy.
It was great hearing these Legends converse in such a relaxed way about their history with the interesting details. Always a cut above, challenging, catchy tunes.

He kinda just seems to be sitting there amazed that he's a part of this group. I mean, he's certainly got the ability, but two of the originals of that era plus Vai... he must feel like the luckiest drummer in the world this year.
I love Danny's drumming in Tool, but I wonder what this would sound like with Bill Buford.
Actually, Adrian's memory about the very first tour (after 44 minutes into the video) is kind of fuzzy. They played Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part Two and Red from the very first show (Bath, April 30th, 1981) onward. Plus the seven tunes that would end up on the album Discipline. And as an encore, they played one piece a second time. In Manchester (May 7th) and Liverpool (May 8th), it was Elephant Talk; In London (May 10th) and Paris (May 13th), it was Discipline, and in Amsterdam, the show I was fortunate enough to attend (May 15th), it was Red. The entrance fee was 12 guilders and 50 cents (perhaps $6.- 1981 US$). The show lasted about 65 minutes, but it changed lives. I know I can't speak for anybody else, but it definitely changed mine! Anyway, they went into the studio to record the album three days later, May 18th. And the wait for its release, September 22nd 1981, made it one of the longest summers I can remember.

I cannot tell you how excited I am for this tour - I am just missed the original tours (by about 2 years) but did catch the 90's iteration of Crimson and have seen Adrian and Tony many times in different bands and tours. The only thing I can add to what was said by everyone in the interview is my agreement that that music is/was special.
This is one of the best things I’ve ever seen on CZcams. My 5 year old son is a King Crimson fan. We are going to catch the nearest show this fall. Your work is greatly appreciated Rick!

Another great one, Rick Been with you since you started youtube‐ing and watching you gain momentum and respect from your heroes (many of which we have in common) is always a joy to watch. What great storytelling and head setting young musicians should be required to watch. There was nothing near this level of access to our hero's hearts and minds and perspectives when we were growing up. This is such a great use of this medium. Happy for your win.
