I find the flavour a little celery heavy. So I almost never use it on its own but I often use it to bump up the flavour of chicken stock when I don't have time to reduce it. The Costco size jar in my fridge shows how versatile it is and the long shelf life.

I regularly pick up the Better Than Bullion Chicken at Costco. It's twice the quantity that you find in most grocery stores (16 oz. vs. 8 oz). It's also their "reduced sodium" version, which I prefer.

@@laceyunderall22 Good tip. Also if you're interested in some of the less popular, or hard to find, but interesting flavors you can find them on Amazon. They're more expensive but sometimes it's the only place you can find them. For example, they have a pretty interesting chili base paste that makes a really good chili(better than just using dried supermarket chili powder).

Better then Bouillon is pretty good in a pinch . I also like Campbell's Beef and chicken broth but it is costly ,especially if you need a quanity .You are right the other commercial broth out there is worthless. Your better off just using the powdered bouillon cubes then buying that tasteless prepared broth. I almost always make my own chicken broth and keep a few cans of Campbell's beef broth on hand . Hannah made a video more recently saying to not bother with the boxed broth. I used Better Than Bullion to augment my stock from my Turkey carcass and it was a mistake. As you point out, it's salty. And reducing down the stock 50% made it much darker with some grainy bits I had to strain out. I should have used the low salt boxed broth instead. The stock isn't ruined but it's not optimal for gravy because of the salt.

My first choice for long keeping stock base is First Street brand, from Smart & Final. It comes in chicken, beef, and vegetable. I realize S&F is a regional chain, so not everyone can access it. Amazon used to have it but no longer does. I admit it has some "junk" ingredients, but the taste is exactly what I like. Swanson's pretty good, too, but, as you mentioned, I'm one of those people that never quite uses the whole container. It does come in smaller sizes. I think my next favorite is Herb Ox. I want to be able to drink the broth without finding it too salty or strong or otherwise disgusting, and I do like Herb Ox for that. If you're vegetarian, G Washington's or McKays are pretty good. I've tried the Watson beef stock powder and really did not care for it at all. Still can't beat homemade. 😊

    1) Nothing beats “Better Than Bouillon” but everyone I know used the “REDUCED SODIUM” version. 2) But I’ve never refrigerated this product in decades of use, and I use almost all their bouillon flavors. 3) I use a scale with grams and notes my recipes this way. It makes such a difference. 3) Thank you for the vegan info! I sometimes cook vegan and don’t love the “Better Than Bouillon” and am excited to try the Orrington one. Wow, it’s got 5 stars on Amazon! It’s listed in bulk, and a low sodium since this is such an easy way to add excessive sodium to a diet. 5) I would also add “Knorr Caldo De Pollo - Chicken” (and I also like the tomato). I learned about it through Crouton Crackerjacks recipe for Mexican Rice (I really recommend it, so easy and so yummy).

I have used Swanson's when it's on sale, but being that I shop at a Kroger based store (Fred Meyer), I often get the Kroger branded broth, for the low sodium chicken stock, it's not bad, fairly chickeny in taste I might add. That said, nothing beats making it yourself and I do when I have the bones/meat left from a chicken or turkey and can make it then. I have some homemade shrimp stock and some homemade beef stock, and just did turkey stock and most in cubes in the freezer.
I have used BTB too but don't buy it currently due to the price, but gotta be careful as it can be a tad salty, though nothing like the cubes from Knorr as they are I think largely salt.

I use beef Better Than Bouillon with boxed supermarket beef broth to make a very acceptable quick Pho broth. I use it in pretty much any beef broth soup and have been doing so for quite some time. I love it when something I have been using for years turns out to be a "best choice" for ATK. It happened with Matfer Bourgeat as well as Mercer Cutlery too. Having Swanson Chicken Broth on the list is also very surprising, considering I buy it very cheap at a Grocery outlet all the time.
The hot tip on Better Than Bouillon is to buy it at Costco rather than a grocery store. The Costco jars are twice the size of the grocery store offerings (Costco-16 oz. vs. grocery 8 oz) and cost the same price. Beef BTB is hard to come by at Costco so stock up when you see it...I usually have at least 4 jars on hand to see me through the lengthy periods when Costco doesn't have it.

They are my preferred bases. I tried Knorr chicken powdered bouillon but find it has a strange off flavor. However the soft Knorr bouillon cubes are ok albeit salty. They make a chipotle cube that I drop into meat chili and soups for a spice kick. None of these bases however, should be mistaken for a nutritious gelatinous bone broth tea served with some meyer lemon and a bit of salt.

In Dec 2022 NY Times Wirecutter article totally panned Swanson and recommended Target house brand Good&Gather Organic Chicken bone broth and Costco Culinary Treasures Organic Bone Broth. These recommendations , including ATK’s, may be subjective or may indicate quality variations as large companies search for best deals from generic suppliers. The one I tend to most prefer is Kitchen Basics unsalted. I just tend to prefer to control the saltiness of my recipes, and most broths are too salty to start. Of course, there is Alton Brown's pressure cooker broth recipe... have tried it, and it really is the bomb.

I like this unsalted brand too when I need a lot of stock for my chicken curry. Otherwise I use BTB.

I don’t think that Swanson is better than Kitchen Essentials or Pacific but they’re all pretty much the same.

Except Kitchen Essentials and Pacific are much higher in protein. Better in my book. And you can add collagen by adding something like Great Lakes collagen granules.

None of the chosen broths would make it into my cart.

Better Than Bullion: bought it at Costco. It spoiled before I could use a whole jar (of three). Yet, it's so salty that I didn't want to use it. I love salt, my friends have commented over the years about it. I keep a salt shaker on my desk and refill it every couple of months. It's not better than bullion, not to me, my wife or anyone we know. I read a comment below that Costco has a reduced salt version. I will try that.

Better than bullion saves the day so often. I think, "Oh, I'm out of stock." Then I remember I have Better than Bullion in 3 flavors. Let's keep it real, Knorr bullion cubes should be on this list. They are a totally adequate stock base.

If I don’t have any homemade broth then it’s Better than Bullion for the win!⭐️
