    This one took me longer than expected to whip up because I was looking for a smaller encounter that is less static, after encountering The Valentine 20 times, Grandma 16 times and being attacked by all sorts of ships at least 100 times I decided to shift my focus to this idea as there's an interesting story there. Hopefully there'll be more to come soon.

    There is a side quest that takes you to the house Va'ruun embassy where you discover that there is a "venom tree" that emits pheromones' that induce hallucinations/ visions, so my guess is they had one of those plants on the station and it gave the scientist foreshadowing of the tragedy and maybe it also called the zealots to it as well.

      I'd guess the one weird Varuun zealot hiding on board discovered the hallucinogenic properties of the plant gave him a 'vision' and he called his buddies to grab the samples and research on it for his cult.

    I met him and his parents in New Atlantis, his parents being disgusted that Bobby was almost given to foster parents.
    Also, there are trees in the Var'uun embassy that have clouds of spores around them, possibly the same psychotropic plant being studied on the space station?

    • @Fizhy
      @Fizhy  Před 8 měsíci +11

    There is a Venom Tree, I believe, contained within the starstation's labs. If you visit the House Var'uun embassy, you'll notice the similarities between one of the plants on RE-939 and the tree growing throughout the Embassy's interior. Baines probably was not originally a member of House Var'uun, but exposure to the venom tree induced hallucinations and led to a religious awakening. From there he probably contacted the Zealots, The Venom Tree is considered Holy to house Var'uun, so it being an object of study by the UC is a sacrilege big enough to prompt an attack...That said Chambers gross incompetence caused her to ignore brewing issues aboard the station in regards to one of her researchers going off the deep end and she chose to save herself while sacrificing dozens of others, she earned her karmic kick in the arse.

    I remember there is a theory about one of the plants that is being studied is a venon tree, which has a lot of significance with Va'ruurn but maybe even telepathic properties so that would be the thing leading the Va'ruurn extremists to the station.

      @Fastshot Před 8 měsíci +1

    • @redshirt49
      @redshirt49 Před 8 měsíci +2

      I assumed the stations attack was an inside job. Dr Baines is mentioned as throwing the terms "penitent" around and dreamed of being devoured by a great snake. He was also performing experiments to that effect. This seems to hint that he was a follower of the Va'ruun religion.
      Add to that the Zealot attack coincided with the one week where security was left vulnerable due to a personnel change, also during a time period where evacuation procedures had just been changed and were still unfamiliar to the station's crew. So I'd guess he signaled the zealots when the station was vulnerable.

  • @Night27272000
    @Night27272000 Před 8 měsíci +2

    Starstation RE-939 was attacked because it in fact had a Venom Tree (The one with the red vine like leaves aka VP-0184) as mentioned by others this same tree is found in the Va'ruun embassy and is even commented by the ambassador as being from their Home World. How it found itself in a UC research facility is anyone's guess, but that would be the best reason why Zealots would attack it as the Ambassador also implies it has religious significance.

    I believe Dr. Baines was a Varuun sleeper/infiltrator and had a bad trip on a specimen's pollen/excretions that trigged vivid hallucinations that were rooted in his core beliefs and ideology which he mistook as a sign from the Serpent that action was required as he viewed his coworkers as "Penitents" which to me reinforced his core religiously motivated zealous beliefs (also likely a side effect of the psychotropic agent on his nervous system/brain) and it's very likely he mistook this psychotic episode as an actual message from the Serpent and summoned his compatriots/the unit of House Varuun hardliners who are still preying on space to "purge/purify" the station as he believed the Serpent had called them to action.
