What On Earth Is Going On At Derby County?

  • In September 2015, lifelong fan and local multimillionaire Mel Morris completed a takeover of Derby County from the club's American owners.
In the six years since, Derby have made the Championship play-offs three times - but last season, the club avoided relegation to League One by just a single point under Wayne Rooney, and the Rams are still facing legal action and a transfer embargo from the EFL.
In this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at a football club famed worldwide for being the worst in the history of the Premier League; at their financial issues, failed takeover attempts, and their war with the English Football League.

In my view it should be about bringing up future talent, not just another version of the premier league where the title is usually bought not won. SWFC are a prime example of when throwing money at everything can ruin a club if it doesn't work and they still have players on big wages years after. If spending £40 million means you collapse after 2 seasons when you don't get promoted then you really shouldn't even be thinking about spending £40 million. First rule of any business should be sustainability, if you can't sustain it if it does go wrong then you shouldn't be even trying as it can and does easily destroy a club. The payments after relegation is what needs looking at in my opinion, I get that they still have players on premier league wages but if you can't afford those wages then sell some or at least put relegation wage drop clauses in all players contracts.

In fairness, we got rid of McClaren the first time because he failed to distance himself from links to Newcastle and eventually he had his head turned. Gary Rowett was poached by Stoke and then Lampard was taken by Chelsea. I think the EFL are after Morris more than Derby. Hopefully with a sensible new owner we can get back to some normality

An excellent summary of just how it is at Pride Park Stadium for the Black And White faithful, and let me tell you, it is a very frustrating and uncomfortable feeling, trying to work out where our club is heading. But this was well worth the watch, the research absolutely spot on, although there is one very tiny detail that I believe is not correct, and misrepresents Gary Rowett's departure. My understanding is that it wasn't the 2-1 loss to Fulham in the play-off semis that saw him 'finished', more the fact that Stoke City offered to double his money, from the £2M he got from Derby, to £4M. As a Derby supporter, I was sorry to see Gary Rowett depart, but for the offer of that kind of money, it was understandable. Otherwise, a very good production, and thank you.
