    Less than three years ago, Derby County were 90 minutes away from reaching the Premier League, ultimately losing a hard-fought contest with Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final after beating Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds in the semis. But while both of those clubs are now in the English top flight, Derby are not only languishing in the relegation zone of the second tier after being docked 21 points for entering administration and breaching the English Football League’s profitability and sustainability rules, but face expulsion from the Football League and the prospect of folding altogether, which would bring an end to the club’s 138-year history.
    The Rams have been looking for new owners since 2019, following years of financial mismanagement under Mel Morris. But after multiple failed takeovers, their efforts have now been hampered by legal challenges from Middlesbrough and Wycombe Wanderers, who claim the club held an unfair advantage over them due to their rule breaches, something which could cost Derby up to £40million. Any new owner would have to write off debts of around £60million on top of this, so taking over at Pride Park is less than ideal for prospective buyers. Meanwhile, supporters were recently issued a warning following allegations of “abuse and personal attacks” directed at the club’s administrators.
    But how did Derby get into such big trouble? Who is to blame? And what will happen next? With the future of one of England’s most historic clubs in the balance, let’s take a look.

    THe thing with the Amortisation is that the EFL signed off on it for three years then changed their mind - I'm convinced this is why the fine was so small after the appeal, because what Derby did wasn't illegal it was just not what the EFL expected. The EFL then changed their FFP rules to match.

    As a Wycombe fan, it’s a pretty tough situation to be in. Derby cheated, and ultimately deserve to be punished. However the punishment must be directed towards Mel Morris and not Derby as an institution. Responsibility for the mess Derby are in is ultimately down to Morris but the way the EFL have handled things and continued to pursue Derby leaves a lot to be desired. They initially signed off on Derby’s amortisation policy which allowed Derby to continue doing it. Their handling of the boro and Wycombe claims have been troubling to Derby fans. The EFL gave Derby an extension to the middle of August to publish their books with a linear amortisation policy, which is after the season had already begun. Naturally Derby waited until the season had already started before releasing this information as any company would do in this situation. The EFL gave Wycombe false hope by releasing a joint fixture list before the start of the season and their claim should be against the EFL for giving Derby the extension to publish the accounts. Boro have tried suing the EFL because of their failure to come down hard enough on Derby and enforce their own rules. The case has been dropped and straight after the EFL started pursuing Derby again to cover their own backs. Derby/Morris have not been perfect during this whole thing but it looks as though wealthy men in suits bickering will cause a club to die. Morris has just come out and said he will take on the claims from boro and Wycombe himself if it allows Derby to get a buyer in place, so hopefully their is light at the end of the tunnel.

    To see such a legendary institution like Derby County FC in such dire straits because of the financial ineptitude of one man, and an organization's unwillingness to punish the man/men responsible is just sad.
    The punishments need to be handed down to Mel Morris and the EFL.
    This is what I'd do:
    Administratively relegate Derby to League One, but no further. Reinstate Wycombe to the Championship. Ensure Mel Morris NEVER owns another football club to ensure it doesn't happen with another club. And rework the EFL's FPP test, to mandate any and all financial documents to weed out candidates that have had prior financial issues to avoid another Bury FC situation.

    • @Chrisbob11
      @Chrisbob11 Před 2 lety +8

      At the start, before the court cases, I would've backed this approach, but no doing this is completely and utterly ludicrous, and here is why;
      So far we have played our way from the hole we dug ourselves to what could be described as being back in the fight for safety, 21 points taken off and still we stay up would be insane and that is what we are to achieve if we carry on as we have been so far, so to relegate us into League 1, with either 0 points tally or the points tally we have now, would be idiotic, for 2 reasons.
      1. Derby have already served their penalty, that was the 21 points deducted, that was the embargo which we had for the window just gone, whereby Rooney was being told by text that a derby player had reluctantly been told to leave the club for funds and then that Rooney couldn't bring any new faces in to what had been a small squad, an even smaller squad now. So by that sense we have had more than our penalty deserved, as well as then a fine or 2 before we showed the books for the 15/16-18/19 seasons.
      And 2. that would be completely unfair on anyone else in league 1, especially the clubs who are ahead of Wycombe, for them to be swapped with Derby, especially if they either both started on 0 points as then Wycombe would probably be relegated back to League 1 without a seconds notice as i doubt they'll be able to recoup the points gap to Reading or Cardiff and then also unfair to Derby with the same reasons in League 1, and then you also cant have it where you do that with the same points tally as that would put us 4 points adrift from current 24th, making Rooney's progress so far invalid, and then have a bigger gap to change to get to safety, while putting Wycombe 4th in the Championship and vying for premier league whilst playing easier teams to get those points, making no only the whole of the championship angry as they've then been gifted the chance of promotion after relegation the season prior but also anyone in League 1, especially seeing as they're sitting 5th in league 1 with other teams who have been better than them above of them cheated by them, a bit like they might've felt when again Wycombe got promoted to the championship to begin with because they had 2 covid cases and a few injuries, leading them to miss out on a game in the 19/20 season and then be pushed into playoffs from being in 8th due to Points Per Game being good from missing a game to the rest of the league, so really some can argue they should never have made it to the playoffs anyway.
      And yet in all of this I still haven't spoken a sentence about the Middlesborough claims which is the main reason behind it all with them wanting £45M on top of the £6M Wycombe want, costing any new prospectus owners £51M on top of the £60M+ needed for creditors and Administration fees, meaning the whole debacle would be for nothing with the Boro claims being the big hitters.
      And all this over, what was essentially a FANTASY SEASON! Neither Boro nor Wycombe have a valid claim for 'their' money as then otherwise any team who didnt get promoted could start filing similar lawsuits against any club who did get promoted as 9/10 times the club who got promoted is either in one of their 3 years of parachute payments or has massively overspent their budget and then have escaped that by reaching the big time, meaning then the EFL cannot touch you as you would not be under their regime, which is why it wasn't until 2016 when QPR got their fine for breaking FFP when, surprise surprise, we were the opposition to their FFP breaking team into the prem.
      Essentially the whole scheme of it all is a bit fraudulent, and this hasn't been me trying to cover Derby's tracks, as Mel and his financial ways did cheat us out, but as well as that the whole issue boils down to the EFL and how they're run as they dont have a way of flagging financial problems up before they cause this, meaning it happens where big spenders can get away into the prem and never have to face the punishment or they get caught up on like us from overspending to get away with most of the time with the relegated Premier League clubs being promoted back up there a season later or slumping down 2-3 divisions like Blackpool or Sunderland and also then having clubs like Derby and Sheff Wed who are beaten in the playoffs to another team spending stupidly more than them or from them being a former EPL team.

    • @JohnRitchiejd23
      @JohnRitchiejd23 Před 2 lety +2

      @@Chrisbob11 Yeah. I agree. Truthfully, my point is there needs to be some form of punishment handed out to Mel Morris for, effectively, destroying Derby County, and the EFL for allowing it to happen on their watch.
      I would make Mel pay the fees that Wycombe and Boro are wanting from DCFC, and then the EFL needs to be taken over by people that actually care about the clubs in their divisions instead of just how much money they can make in a given fiscal year.
      I think the Prem should have been forced to trickle down some money to the EFL, to help support the money-starved clubs that are/were on the precipice, such as Bolton and Bury just a few years back, clubs like Leyton Orient during their relegation to the National League, Blackpool during their imitation of Icarus from the Prem to the bottom half of League 2, Portsmouth during their descent down the divisions. It isn't like the money isn't in England, it's just being kept in the Prem.

      Yeah, but when you compare both the Championship and Premier League there is a huge difference in difficulty - some teams go up and straight back down simply because they either can't compete with the other teams, or that they don't have the financial stability to buy any players for a top-flight campaign.
      Though, we have seen some great additions to the Premier League in recent years, such as Aston Villa.
      Lampard done well with Derby due to the easier, somewhat less competitive nature of the Chamoionship, if he does well with Everton then I accept that I am wrong, but when I see his tenure with Chelsea it really does make me doubt his next spell in the English Premier League.

When he took over, chelsea was toxic under Sarri, transfer ban and losing hazard ( contributed 50% of the goals under Sarri - equivalent to Liverpool losing Salah), not only did he bleed the youth in but managed top 4 and an FA Cup final in a season written off by most. Ultimately he fell victim to big money signings but I would argue none of the new attackers have still found their feet. Both Werner and Havertz still are sub par and Ziyech looked better under Lampard. Tuchel adapted and manipulated the system to get the best out of others (defense) while Lampard failed to do so solely trying to fix the attack.

The owners are the problem, stop punishing the players, fans, managers and staff! I hope Derby make a comeback and can get to the premier league one day, they deserve it after how they've been treated.

    You mention Bury FC in your video and I'm a lifelong fan, or I was until it was ripped away from me. I'm sorry but I've got no sympathy whatsoever for the plight of Derby given their major role in our expulsion. Morris voted for our expulsion even as he was hatching plans for his own "schemes" at Derby. Granted the present owner of Bury FC, in administration, is a character who should never have been allowed anywhere near a Football Club, but to expel a club with 130odd years of history in order to get back at this individual, who was stringing the EFL along when asked to provide proof of funding, is just throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The fans and community, who had no control whatsoever over club ownership, had their club deleted by the EFL, the very same people who allowed this individual to take over in the first place, my blood still boils at the memory of it. Then to add insult to injury we had some Derby fans, (and other clubs it has to be said), on our Message Board saying we deserved everything we got, that we had "cheated our way to promotion" etc etc. Well Derby fans, karma comes back to bite you on the bum.

      What was he supposed to do? Just turn down the job at the club he loves and calls home to stay with Derby in the championship? He might never get that chance again. And its not comparable to Rooney and Everton. They're a mess right now and Moshiri is clueless. Not anywhere near as lucrative as the gig at one of Europe's super clubs like Chelsea. Lampard would have been insane to turn down the job at Stamford Bridge to stay at Derby. He almost got them promoted in his first season in management and owes them nothing.

    Where did you get the information from that Middlesbrough want £40m thats has not been documented as fact anywhere. Also the court case is not just about Derby cooking the books from Middlesbrough's point of view, Derby bought a player with fraudulant money that Middlesbrough where in for, that player went on to score 9 goals for them before the end of the season, so its this direct impact Middlesbrough are claiming for, not the fact they broke FFP they have already been punished for that...This case has also been going on for 12 months, well before Derby went into administration, Derby not dealing with that case early is the reason they are in this position, so people like GN asking Middlesbrough to step aside are speaking nonsense.......they also owe the tax man a huge amount of money...not sure why any blame is been pointed towards Middlesbrough in this case at all, if you think the claim has legs or not they still have to deal with it and they have had 12 months to do so.....Dont want to see them go bust but this is 100% on them in every way possible.

    I see people blaming the EFL for this mess and it's a bit annoying. Yes you could argue the EFL need to restructure certain things to prevent these things but had the EFL taken a harsher stance earlier, I can almost guarantee that Derby fans would be complaining and accusing the EFL of trying to stop their promotion push. I also don't like the fact people are asking for Derby to be saved just because they are a "historical club". Why should that play a part?

    • @nikthompson4718
      @nikthompson4718 Před 2 lety +2

      But the EFL are to blame. They accepted Derby's amortisation financing technique and allowed them to do it. It was only after Gibson attempted to sue the EFL that they decided to change their rules to clamp down on teams 'cheating'.
      The other question is why isn't Steve Gibson interested in suing Bournemouth for the 2014/15 season? They lost twice to Bournemouth who won the league 5 points above Middlesborough and then Middlesborough lost the playoffs. Bournemouth then got fined for breaching FFP. Strange that MFC haven't gone after Bournemouth but have pursued Derby for 2 seasons instead. Personal vendetta, I think so.

    • @QuotedPixels
      @QuotedPixels Před 2 lety

      @@nikthompson4718 I completely agree that the EFL have to shoulder huge blame for this. They need to change the way the handle club spending. I'm just saying that I dont feel much sympathy for the fans or employees and I think Borough and wanderers have every right to atleast attempt to sue Derby although there probably is some bias. If Derby loose the case, then they should be dissolved. Simple.

    • @Aurion254
      @Aurion254 Před 2 lety +2

      @@QuotedPixels Glad you got that off your chest. Should Man City or Paris St Germain also be dissolved for when they breached FFP rules? That's not how all this works - the only way Derby will be 'dissolved' is if a buyer for the club cannot be found as there aren't enough assets to pay the debts. In any case, why should the fans and the players be punished? It's not like they fiddled the books! The fact that you don't have any sympathy for the fans or the staff probably says more about you than anything else. The amazing struggle for survival this season should tug on the heartstrings of any true football fan. What Rooney and the players are managing this season despite the headwinds of a 21 point deduction and extremely severe transfer embargo is awe inspiring. If they manage to get out of the relegation zone, it will be more monumental than Leicester winning the PL.

    • @QuotedPixels
      @QuotedPixels Před 2 lety +1

      @@Aurion254 The reason I said Derby would get dissolved is because its highly likely that they wouldn't be able to find the cash to pay if the ruling went against them. The ongoing legal case also makes its unlikely that a buyer would want to take over Derby. Man city and PSG wouldn't be dissolved because they would be able to pay the fine regarding FFP breaches. On your point about fans or staff. I completely agree that neither fans or staff fiddled the books. However my point is the fact the potential FFP breaches have been well documented and known for a while. It was known when Derby reached the play off finals. I didn't hear fans or staff complaining then. If Derby had gone up, the fans or the staff wouldn't care that they'd effectively cheated other teams to promotion. But it's because its all gone wrong that we are now talking about it. You said my lack of sympathy says more about me than anything else. Your right. It shows I'm ready to think with my head not my heart. Your use of the word heartstrings illustrates this perfectly. Its because we've been thinking with our hearts and not our heads that we have sleep walked into this horrible position. I don't know who you think you are to judge who is or isn't a true football fan. Its because of our hearts over mind attitude that clubs keep getting into this mess as owners and leagues know that fans won't allow clubs to die so they aren't risking anything. If Derby were to disappear it might serve as a much needed warning to the rest of the football world. I completely agree with your final statement regarding Rooney and the miracles he's performing. It would be something out of a fairly tale if they stayed up. I want Derby to survive. I just want them to survive for the right reasons and not just because the football world felt pity upon them

    • @Aurion254
      @Aurion254 Před 2 lety

      @@QuotedPixels Apologies, your oc made it sound like you thought the club should be dissolved as a punishment by the EFL, when they've already hit the club with a number of penalties. Still, it's a hard lesson for any lifelong Derby fans for the actions of the few. I agree not enough of us were outspoken enough when we were flagrantly violating the FFP rules but there are plenty of us who felt a lot of shame for the club under Mel Morris. Not just the financials but the differing ways they treated Keogh, Bennett and Lawrence in the wake of the drink-driving incident. They all should have been punished equally if you ask me, nevermind that the two younger players were more valuable to the future of the club. Morris has a lot to answer for the reputation of the club for many reasons.
