The way I compare Judo and BJJ for self-defense purposes is that I think Judo is definitely better! Personally I would prefer having throwing technique- take down strategy and defense against throws- takedowns and also the occasional emphasis and focus on traditional newaza ground submission work every so often! versus BJJ focusing on nothing but that lazy and ridiculous guard pulling bullshit and having absolutely no takedowns! Do the math people! It is seriously better to have takedown strategy with a handful of submissions instead of just nothing but submissions off of your ass! Judo is definitely a better option!!!!!!! Seriously folks if you're having to deal with somebody on the street you're going to really be glad you trained throwing techniques from Judo when you are defending yourself on concrete.

Yes man , most judoka's have better tools then the average BJJ practitioners. Fight always start standing and a good hard trow on concrete is a fight ending, without going to the ground for a sub .

This video was such an eye opener. I never understood why at my old jui jitsu school people who sometimes didn't even train that ofen where promoted and despite the fact I was training consistently I progressed at a snails pase. It's like you said, it's about loyalty. The people getting promoted either had trained at the same place for years, or where married to coach, or would compete and spread the instructors name on the Internet, or would kiss the coaches arse. It was all about feeding the coaches ego. I train Judo now and the standards are so much higher and everyone is given the same amount of respect. No one it above anyone regardless of rank.

You just need to find a better jujitsu school, judo is actually derived from jiujitsu.

One of the black belts I spared with the other day at judo said something beautiful. "A white belt can learn from a black belt, but a black belt can also learn from a white belt". At jiu jisu if you you asked sone of the higher belts to roll they would just shake there head and look away.

Not everywhere, to be fair. But that shmuck attitude is becoming an issue in several studios. A friend of mine, who received his BJJ black belt in the late 90s, once told me a joke about the younger generations: the difference between a bb and God is that God doesn't claim to know JJ...My sense is that it comes from media overexposure... not good for the ego

Judo is better for self defense. I wish there was a good no Gi/striking self defense system that wasn't krav maga. I guess I could look for an mma school.

Another interesting video. BJJ is judo with a different rule set. If Kano’s students had left Japan a few years later it would be called Brazilian Judo.

Judo is basically Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu predates judo. It was used on the battle field before Jigoro Kano created Kodokan Judo. I've studied both and Modern day Judo has pretty much abandoned the Ground fighting techniques. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu on the other hand concentrates mostly on the ground techniques. They both complement each other. When I was doing Judo I found that on the Ground everyone was just muscleing their way to victory. I went to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and picked up the Ground fighting skills it helped a lot. Both are excellent to learn though.

Gracie’s trained judo but added western wrestling and learn to fight verse other arts and added tracing from boxing and sambo. They won’t talk about wrestling part Gracie’s history. Catch as can wrestling. Judo and bjj are both great. Gracie went more commercial while judo is more government and federation supported.

Bjj beats judo any day of the week and ive trained boxing for over 20 years as well as wrestling, bjj, tang soo do, hapkido, and muay thai partially. I can tell you judo is really good at redirecting an opponent’s energy and force around and throwing people around. But it by no means teaches you how to subit and choke people out like bjj. Dont get me wrong some judo teachers are bad ass and prepare for more aspects of a fight especially better stand up game than bjj including stand up grappling especially. But most taught here in America and overseas will not prepare properly for a real situation like bjj or boxing or even wrestling.

Search the lineage of BJJ and you will found that Maeda, Geo Omori are judokas from Kodokan and they taught the Gracies & Luiz Franca Judo not catch wrestling
