An 11-year-old girl paid the price when she tested out a new kid craze by making slime. Kathleen Quinn's mother says her daughter suffered third degree burns on her hands after following a recipe on CZcams to create a goo similar to that seen at the Kids Choice Awards. The mom says she played with her creation every day for several weeks and claims doctors told her the burn was a chemical reaction from one of the ingredients. #InsideEdition
I understand borax is very dangerous to make slime with, but her mother said she'd been making it EVERYDAY for 7 WEEKS, therefore it'd be sure to give you a serious reaction; compared to someone who made some for a day.

Everyone has different skin types and allergies so she probably had an allergic reaction to the borax because of something in it that she was allergic too, the Re Nu contact lenses have boric solutions in it and people put the lenses on their eyeballs
Very true. Everyone is different and resistance can build up over a period of time. A few of my friends and I pinch our cigarettes out with our fingers without even thinking about it, but another of my friends got a blister just pinching a candle out. I also remember handing a hot plate to my ex boyfriend and he dropped it on the floor.

I’ve (stupidly) handled borax & water bare-handed dozens of times in the past with no ill reaction. My son and I both played with borax-made slime for months- no skin reaction whatsoever from either of us.

I once had a horror story with borax, when I was 9 I was obsessed with slime and one time my mom bought me and my sister borax for our slimes, once I finished making my slime I dont know why I had the bright idea to put the slime on my face, I ended up getting chemical burns around the mustache area and ever since that I stopped using borax, its been years and the last time I played with slime was when I was 11 and now I'm 14

So do things like detergent or bleach or medicine. They mean small children. This was an eleven year old girl who is clearly smart enough to function normally. Accidents happen. And her mother was supervising her to some degree.
Children is children if your under 15/16 you shouldn't be using it or touching it without parent supervision and precautions.
+Luna Moon That's ridiculous. That's like not allowing your ten year old to do laundry or use the dish washer just because it says "keep out of reach of children" on the label. Yeah, children means children. But different items means different ages. Like for soap you'd likely allow your child who's about 8 or 9+ to handle it, while for something like a lighter you'd only allow your 16+ (if that) child to handle it.
Her mother said, "She made it everyday for weeks!" Once or twice did not cause those burns. It was the repeated exposure "everyday for weeks" that did it. She didn't get those burns until at least 2 weeks. Did not happen right away. Why not stop when her hands were first irritated? Doesn't Mom ever check what her kid is doing? Can't she read labels?

No, actually, that's impossible. You don't get chemical burns on your skin from allergies. Even typing that out sounds ridiculous. You may get hives or irritation, but burns like she had on her hand do not come from something like allergic reactions. I put borax in open plastic containers and keep it in the refrigerator and freezer to absorb moisture. It works great for that. Prevents mold in the ridge and extends the time between defrosting the freezer.

borax is basically sodium borate, also used in contact lens solution, eye drops, and sta-flo(liquid starch) she was probably touching the actual borax powder, or she did not add HOT WATER to one TEASPOON or borax powder. borax is a natural mineral found in cleaning products. When you add HOT WATER to the ONE TEASPOON or borax, the hot water kind of dissolves the chemicals a little bit. as i said, borax is a mineral that is in California, and borax is used in hand soaps, hand sanitizes and detergent. Technically yes, borax is safe if you handle it and wash your hand properly. I have been making slime for 1 whole year and i have been selling it. nothing happened.
