@@gvbezoff back in the day Bette seemed th be everywhere, tirelessly performing and releasing music. Hadn't heard anything in awhile, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places lol. Thats all that I meant by "was"
Bette Midler is wonderful at doing tributes to older music. If you've never heard the original Andrews Sisters version of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from the WWII era, you deserve the treat of giving it a listen. m.czcams.com/video/8of3uhG1tCI/video.html
There are several videos of the Andrew Sisters doing this. I think the best one is where they are in uniform. I think that was in the movie Hollywood Canteen-where Hollywood a place to entertain and serve the troops of WWII.
Bette and the Harlettes....there were many now famous Harlettes including singer Melissa Manchester, Married with Children star Katie Segal, and Black-ish grandma, Jenifer Lewis among the many along the way.
Bette Midler made a 1991 movie called For the Boys that many thought was based on the life of the great entertainer Martha Raye. It's during WWII and Bette is part of a traveling music group that entertains the troops in Europe. One of the numbers is called "Stuff Like That There" and is a total show stopper. Check it out.
Imagine the conditioning this would take to perform this live. This was part of a tour, Harri, which explains the costumes. Yes, they did have to do this - in the context of a 2-hour+ show - several times a week for months. Truly astonishing.
This was from a part of her act for her "Divine Miss M" tour in the late '70's [she was in Australia in '79], and she had a book from that tour she called "A View from a Broad". This was her character Delores Delago [the Toast of Chicago] who was a cheap lounge act singer who dressed in cheesy costumes.
Bette was hilarious and outrageous in her shows with her backup group "THE HARLETTES", LOL. Speaking of her bra, when I saw her she mentioned her breasts and said I don't know what they weigh but I know it would cost a fortune to ship them to Brazil. She and Barry Manilow started together in the gay baths of NYC. You do what ya' gotta;' do. I always loved Letterman's wry humor too. A great pair. Love the "Jaws" music at the end too! The band was on top of it!
This particular character was "Dolores Delgado, the toast of Chicago" and typically the highlight of her concerts. One of the best as that character was her "promo" for poi balls. czcams.com/video/P_JlAx-TtXU/video.html
I love her skunk, I mean spunk. Never actually met her skunk. Nice guy supposably, as idiots say. There was a wacky band led by Spike Jones, in the 40s, I believe, who are wild like these girls, while playing their instruments. Made for radio, the videos are equally entertaining. There may be two or three people who remember it, so it might not make for a good review, but rather a personal dip into antiquity.
@@HarriBestReactions Greetings from across the pond. I have chimed in here and there, mostly on progressive songs, like Genesis, Yes, Floyd, ELP, King Crimson, Moody Blues, Zappa, Mahavishnu and/or Flipper. The bird. I was taken by your use of language, especially "diamonds in my ears". Had you said "diamonds in my nose", I would have been perplexed, bewildered, yet humored. I guess some people put crystals in their nose, so I guess it is not that far-fetched an idea. Anyways, great to help out. Love the show.
Fantastic. Love Bette. Have from the get go. 1st saw her at the Continental Baths in NY circe 1970 where she played for a roomful of naked gay men who threw their towels at her for an encore. Barry Manilow was her accompanist. She had already been performing in bit parts on Broadway. During that same period Bette began to make appearances outside of Manhattan and I caught her show at Boston's tiny cellar pub, Pall's Mall, with a room of about 30 people. She was "doing the decades' and was in a '30's period. Fabulous! LOL I've seen her many times since and she is one of the great stage performers and concert artists of all time. If you've never seen a full staged Midler concert you are missing out.
Those women were FIT. Bette is quite simply the best. There's just nobody like her. I once saw her stand up out of a giant clam shell and sing Oklahoma. She's simply brilliant, and she and Barry Manilow made the best team.
Bette Midler is an amazing singer and actress but back in the day she had an amazing show fish tails and all! She recently played Dolly in the Broadway musical Hello Dolly.
Bette is an awesome singer, actress and entertainer! Conservatives don't like her liberal politics, but who cares?! :-) Bette is a national treasure. She was born in Hawaii and is a huge environmentalist. Every October she sponsors the "Hula-Ween Costume Ball," which raises funds for the New York Restoraton Project, a nonprofit organization that has planted trees, renovated gardens, restored parks and transformed open space for communities throughout New York City’s five boroughs. And in the early 1990s, Midler was an early sponsor of the Adopt-a-Highway campaign, paying $2,000 a month for a crew to clean up a 2-mile section of the Ventura Freeway in Burbank, California, outside Hollywood.
The" Divine Miss M"! I remember a very young Bette on Johhny Carson many years ago. I became a fan then. You might want to play "Hello in There," "Am I Blue," or "Delta Dawn" from the same LP.
Wonderful stuff. I've seen her mermaid thing before. Thing the music is Glenn Miller, could be wrong, it certainly dates from that era. Nice pick Harri.
Not really a one-off. Bette did that every night for years in her outrageous live show. I first saw her live (with her Harlettes) in '76. I haven't been the same since.

Bette Midler and James Caan - - For the Boys. She plays a USO Army performer. I don't know what the mermaid outfits are all about, but, I guess it's sort of an army/sea creature fusion.
Have you seen the movie "The Rose" från 1979 starring Bette Midler ? The movie was somewhat based on the life of Janis Joplin, the film follows a self-destructive rock star in the late 1960s, who struggles to cope with the pressures of her career and the demands of her ruthless business manager. Listen and watch the music video from The Rose czcams.com/video/jxvPjuREDpE/video.html and here she is performing the song The Rose in a concert 1999 czcams.com/video/ZFa324V1kgU/video.html
