As a drummer, you need to explore Gene Krupa. There's a great video from around 1960 of him preforming Sing, Sing, Sing with a quintet. ALL drummers owe him a debt of gratitude for popularizing the instrument.

Krupa played in a movie with Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper. At the end of the scene he plays a very special and unique drum set. Look for Barbara Stanwyck, (vocals: Martha Tilton), Gene Krupa & His Orchestra. Drum Boogie". Worth to watch.
The movie with Krupa and Stanwyck was Ball of Fire. Good movie.

Gene Krupa was one of the first to elevate the drums from just being a rhythm keeper to being another voice in the orchestra. Love Big Band music!
I could NOT imagine: being able to go to a "club", back in the day, and having the chance to LISTEN to SEVERAL PIECES, like this, ALL in ONE NIGHT!! WHAT a SHOW THAT would BE!!!
This song was written by Louis Prima of "Just a Gigolo" fame … worth checking out too.
Louis Prima also did the voice of King Louis in The Jungle Book (1967).
Louis Prima from New Orleans played trumpet and sang, like the other Louis from New Orleans ( Armstrong ). Benny Goodman and the band didn't bother with the vocals, they just liked the music.
Drummer Buddy Rich called Gene Krupa "the best drummer of all time" - true story - they were good friends - and drummer Neil Peart of RUSH was inspired by and influenced by Gene Krupa and started playing the drums at age 12 or 13 because of Gene Krupa.
There is a video of the drum contest between them. Battle of master and student.

Goodman and his band played for decades. My Mom died in 19. She was 87. She saw Goodman, the Dorsey's, Artie Shaw, and on... Drummers, Krupa, Buddy Rich, Dave Tough... She saw Artie Shaw before he retired in the late 40's. She saw him in Washington DC at the Earle Theatre at a afternoon performance, his female singer was Billie Holiday, it cost her 75 cents.

I used to listen to Big Band with my dad every Friday there was a show on public radio back in the 70s and 80s. Anyway, Benny Goodman will still touring in the late 70s and my dad took me to go see him. He had to sit on a stool once in a while to take a breather, but it was great and I’m so glad I have that memory and can say that at 14 years of age, I saw a Big Band legend live in concert.
Swing music is what my mother used to teach me to dance when I was as tall as her at 5' 1" (1965). The spins and between the legs slides did me well later in the disco era... contests in LA with cash and drinks prizes. Great band and danceable music.
I noticed that. Disco was a little callback to big band.
You should se some of the Lyndy Hop and Swing dancers 💃 dancing to this , they were amazing.

A real throwback to the time when the world hung on the brink of darkness and destruction, and yet they kept their cool and did their part. Indeed the “Greatest Generation” with all their flaws kept the flame of liberty alight. It’s our turn now, and we must MUST do whatever we can to see that the American “Great Experiment” continues…..
I’m sorry for your loss, Lee. Our mother died at 48 when my sister was only 11, and she hasn’t (yet) done the work to grieve and heal. It’s a pain that can be soothed and healed, but the memories and the gifts shine through. Keep searching!!
Goodman was a classically trained player. His band did this at Carnegie Hall (there were other bands on the bill as well) Most of the audience were very conservative upper crust, but all were tapping their feet to the music.

I grew up on Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Gene, Krupa and Buddy Rich Music playing from my parents Day and night
But my father and my uncle, who taught me how to play the drums leaned a little more towards Buddy Rich, but Gene Krupa was so damn good
You should learn more about Krupa. This particular drum solo has been said to have elevated the role of the drummer from that of an accompanist to that of an important solo voice. Apparently his career was partially tainted by scandal after it was learned that he was a user of……..marijuana. How times have changed.
This is the music my Mom and Dad danced to before I was, you know, even a twinkle in Dads eye. The Big Bands were all the rage. Krupa, Buddy Rich, and as you have here, Benny Goodman were the big names.
This really influenced "jazz" in the movies. You compare the complexity and development of this with most music today and you will instantly realize how low we've gotten. Sorry to hear about your loss. I can't imagine losing a parent at that age.
I listen to The Jack Benny radio Show and the songs that Kenny Baker and Dennis Day sang are so flaccid compared to this. This song was a game changer.

When I was young the drummers I heard the most about from the big band era were Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson. All three great in their own ways. This track is a great example of Krupa's style.
Find the extra long version of Sing, Sing, Sing with Benny Goodman at Carnegie Hall. It's got all the great musicians including Gene Krupa in it. This appearance made swing and those musicians no longer low class musicians.
Lee, it almost makes me jealous that you’re hearing this, and learning about Gene Krupa, for the first time. I’m 66 and have only been a jazz fan for about 20 years, but it seems like forever that I’ve felt that the best drummers in history were Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. Awesome drumming here, and Goodman and the whole band just swung so hard on this track. My dad was a classical musician (church organist, choirmaster etc.) and I remember him being a huge Goodman fan, and I must have picked up something from him. Great reaction especially as you call out the names of the awesome individual players here.

As a kid I listened to this a lot off my Dad's album. Loved it.
I always thought of this as the first jam band, before music discovered electricity. And Gene Krupa, the drummer, was from my South Chicago neighborhood. What a jam! ✌️❤️🎶
Love this. Gene Krupa was an ultra-cool drummer however you should give Buddy Rich a try sometime. Especially anything that features one of his three-minute drum solos. I grew up in the 60`s & 70`s loving all of the different types of music from then. But my mother would also play all of these 78 LPs she had all of the time - most of them big band music. I am really happy that she did & passed that knowledge of this swing music down to me.

Gene Krupa was instrumental (yes, that) in the development of the modern drum kit. In the 1920s drummers made their own “contraptions” out of available marching and exotic percussion. Marching bass and snare, cowbell, woodblocks, temple blocks, China cymbal, Turkish cymbal and Chinese toms (tam tam). Drum manufacturers began to supply mountable Tom’s with one tunable head and the hi hat was introduced by the 1930s. Krupa, as a major star, got manufacturers to create toms with two tuneable heads, larger sizes and larger cymbals that were specialized for riding and crashing.

In the late 1930's this was my grandfather's chair throwing music.
Whoever remastered this had his shit together. I've never heard any 1940's music recorded in stereo.. because it didn't exist.The extended drum solo had a ride tom way over on the left side. It freaked me out when I heard it. So, I'm going to listen to this again, make sure I heard what I thought I heard.

Great to see a reaction to this!!! The original version is about 3 minutes longer. Check out the orchestra performing a shorter version in the movie Hollywood Hotel from 1937. It's awesome to see it performed. Gene Krupa is amazing!!! Greatest drummer in my opinion. His album Drummer Man is fantastic as is the soundtrack to The Gene Krupa Story which Gene plays the tracks on.

A friend of mine's father died of a heart attack at the same age. Although it had a big effect on him, he also told me he had frequent nightmares of his dad doing something that actually happened a lot when he was alive, which was giving him a choice between a beating with a thick leather belt with hobs, or one massive punch to the face. The beating was worse, but the punch he only chose once because it knocked him out and gave him a concussion. Of his nightmares, he always awoke before the deed. His mom became an alcoholic and was later taken advantage of by a conman who robbed himself and all his siblings of their inheritance, as the conman had power of attorney. As it relates to his father dying when he was 9, he later felt deep unresolved resentment towards his father which could never be solved because his dad wasn't around to confront. He also had resentment towards his mom and other siblings, because he had warned them that his mother's lover, who sold himself as a family man and church deacon, was a sociopathic con-artist, and no one believed him. He knew full well that these feelings weren't necessarily logical, but what do you do with feelings? They can't be accounted for rationally, but they come regardless. He is currently a recovering alcoholic and has come to some resolution with his siblings, as, afterall, they now don't and couldn't deny that he was right.
My own family history is quite complex with hair-razing trauma, but, as you grow older you realize so is everyone's to some extent. When we mature we stop seeing our tragedies as so unique as to be the "only one". With most people, you just need to scratch their "normal" exterior to find out not _if they have,_ but rather _from whence it comes,_ that their resentments, issues, and childhood traumas lie. After meaningfully getting that, it's possible to grant ourselves and others grace for we we've done to others, and vice versa. And that can create healing from our past, and move us to be confidant, creative, good allies to one another, build trust, and sleep better, etc, etc.

Lee my dad was a big band drummer, I grew up on this before 1964 and the Beatles enetered my musical universal. Krupa was my Dad's favorite but also loved Buddy Rich as well. Great stuff

Krupa was phenomenal. You should also listen to Dave Clark of the Dave Clark Five (The DC5). Never see anyone reacting to this fabulous band of the sixties that came from the British Invasion. Tom Hanks gave the tribute to The DC5 when they were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There is a documentary about the formation, popularity and history of the band where current musicians praise Dave Clark's style of drumming.

Love this! Another great job. Despite the credits (which are ALWAYS wrong, for some reason), this record is actually a medley of two songs, "Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing)" and "Christopher Columbus." Both have lyrics which Goodman dispensed with. They always leave out "Christopher Columbus"!
And though Jimmy Mundy gets the arrangement credit, Fletcher Henderson originated the "Christopher Columbus" arrangement. (Louis Prima is amazing too, btw.)
There's an even longer and more explosive Goodman "Sing Sing Sing" recorded live at Carnegie Hall which you might want to check out. It's from what was for many years the best-selling jazz album AND the best-selling live album. That version has an extended (shockingly mellow) piano solo by Jess Stacy. But it also roars like this one -- only moreso. Might be worth reacting to.
May I recommend a record Gene Krupa did with his own big band called "Let Me Off Uptown," featuring Anita O'Day and Roy Eldridge. His drumming on that one is equally wild, as are O'Day and Eldridge on vocals and Eldridge's trumpet solo. It will also blow you away.

The dance scene using this song in Ace Ventura is my fave part of the movie. The trouble with the Carnegie Hall recording is that production values are sorely lacking. This one’s way better!

Mr. Goodman had to be CONVINCED by Mr. Krupa to allow him to bring the drums up front and be given those drum solos. Benny WAS convinced, and the rest is history.

Sunday afternoons for me in England, late 50s-early 60s were all about listening to what of my Dad's jazz collection he'd been able to bring with him to the UK from India.

Do yourself a favor and bring up Louis (Loo-ee) Prima (who wrote the piece) and Keely Smith...almost anything, but I recommend "Old Black Magic" (Live performance) as a start. Louis Prima and Keely Smith with San Butera and the Witnesses...nobody had more fun performing.
If you ever saw Disney's Jungle Book, Louis Prima (pronounced Lui) did the voice for King Louis the orangutan. His version of this song is actually better than Goodman's, IMO. During the Swing revival of the 90s Lee Presson and The Nails did an excellent cover of it. If you're a huge fan of Swing do yourself a favor and check out Royal Crown Revue - Walkin Blues. You'll be dancing by the end.
