I worked on a press crew for 7 years when I was a young man and still today those were some of the best memories in my life. We ran 24/7 with 8 press crews and each crew was like a family. I've been a real estate broker for 26 years and there is no kind of comradery with the people I work with. The place we worked printed Sunday magazines for different big cities before Parade Magazine took over most and the company we worked for sold out to a large print company. Most of us had a chance to transfer but I couldn't leave the mountains of east Tennessee but several did. After years working on the press, more than half have passed away and others have retired but we still talk to this day. Still something cool about watching a big web offset press come up to speed and hearing the impressions start thumping with lines of books coming out the end of the folder.

I was in the Printing Industry for 27 years, I held every position on press (jogger, roll tender, 2nd man and Pressman) for RRD in Los Angeles. I loved printing, and it is very sad that this once great industry is no more. The guys I worked with over the years were some of the best people I knew in my lifetime. So yeah, my heart goes out to you guys and gals, I know how it feels when it’s over.

Sad to see this end … people have no idea what they are losing - this machine bonded people, fed families and educated people.

People don't know the teamwork it takes to pull out a wrap, send up a lead and walk in a bar and get the run started again so you meet deadline. I was operator in Sacramento and that Goss is the same Goss I ran. My heart rate would beat a little faster just getting it up to speed. I do miss the smell of the shop.

There is definitely a unique smell.

Indeed, letterpress or offset, the smell is unique and the sound of a web press running is also something special.

Its the paper and the ink that gives you the smell. I worked "down the street" from you in Vacaville, but i did do some time at TC and pennysaver. And i definitely miss it.

@erichvonmanstein6876 yeah I ran press 1 at TC for a while. Commute was way too much for me.

@@fujiapple70 yeah it was the miles of what seemed like nothingness before the causeway. Hated it. Albeit when i had to commute the other way to the city (bay) it wasnt really a "better" trip lol. All that being said id do it all again. Damn i miss printing.😞

This reminds me of the last day of the Anchorage Daily News, where my husband was a lead press operator there for nearly 40 years when they ran their last paper...but the paper is being printed elsewhere now, and he still gets to print it. They are short handed and need press operators really bad....Frontiersman in Wasilla Alaska.

Looked familiar running bulldog tape to web it up. So much easier with that than running just a tapered lead. We need press operators at the Spokesman Review in Spokane Washington. The paper doesn’t run on a Goss Metro anymore. Went to a Magnum about 3 years ago with folder 1 having a upper balloon a main and a sidewinder and folder 2 just a upper balloon and main.

Did those orange presses come from the L.A. Times, Costa Mesa plant?

  • @chipispowdercoatingcharles8444

People whould be amazed at what it takes to print a news paper. The are huge machines that for all the dangerous places where you could get eaten by the press all and all its a pretty safe job if you keep your watts about you
