I think part of it is that in WWII the meaning of the opening words was misrepresented for propaganda purposes by the allies. I grew up on WWII movies that included this propaganda and it was only a long time later I learned the true meaning.

Beautiful anthem. Is the Reichstag they are standing in front of rebuilt? The one the Nazis burned in the 1930s couldn't be. This one looks new and modern style.
There was a fire in the Reichstag in the 30s, but it wasn't a major thing and didn't harm the whole building. It stayed intact, so this here is indeed the original 1884 building. However, it was renovated and stylishly modernised in the 60s and the 90s.
I don't think there's anything wrong with saying your country is the greatest country in the world. There's something wrong with saying your people are the greatest people in the world though. Suddenly being a patriot is now considered the same as being a fascist and it isn't just in Germany either, it's in the UK too and other western countries.
