Weathermen Who Lost It On Live TV

  • Being a weatherman is not an easy job. If your forecast ends up being wrong, everyone will blame you, and even if you get the forecast right, people will still complain if it’s bad weather. In addition, you have to do the exact same thing on live TV day after day and still find a way to make it interesting and fresh for your audience. Taking all of that into consideration, it’s a bit understandable that a meteorologist might get to a point where they lose control, even while being filmed. Let’s take a look at some weathermen who lost it on live TV.

People cracking during the news(especially during a serious story) is comedy GOLD. I'd usually be doing local radio news updates during the 15-30sec breaks for NPR, so I had to be super cereal. For anyone who doesn't know, that night in Dayton there were 19 tornadoes. They ranged from EF0 to EF 5. I was lucky because everything went around the area where I lived, although for awhile one was headed right at me. Many homes that were hit were uninsured because the owners couldn't afford insurance. At least one neighborhood was virtually wiped out. A couple that I worked with lost their house. That night was Memorial Day. Three months later. On August 4, there was a shooting at a popular nightclub. Nine people died, and 17 were injured. It was a horrible to be recovering from the tornados and then have the shooting happen. The community really came together, though. I'm glad that Jamie Simpson said what he did. Lives were saved that night because of the work that he and the other weather men and women did that night. It was extremely difficult to do the warnings with so many tornadoes forming at one time.

But he showed his human side in the aftermath of the tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri on May 22nd, 2011 when he was clearly on the verge of tears while covering the aftermath of the Joplin tornado outside of St. John's Regional Medical Center; the only building in Joplin that could be easily recognized. One really heartwarming story about Mike Bettes is that following the Joplin tornado he adopted an orphaned Golden Retriever and named her Joplyn. Sadly, Joplyn died earlier this year. Being an animal lover and a dog lover I was understandably saddened by this but I reconciled my sadness by reminding myself that at Joplyn was adopted by a loving family and lived in a house full of love and affection.

I remember when Cantori lost his mind over the thunder snow. You couldn't help but be excited for him. That year was crazy, Boston had the most snow in the country that winter and our first big storm wasn't until January 24th (I believe). Then we had like two blizzards a week for the rest of the season.

The WHIO (CBS in Dayton - where Phil Donahue was an anchor before making it big) meteorologist, McCall Vrydaghs, handled it a bit better. She actually got choked up in the middle of the broadcast - seven tornado warnings simultaneously. Western Ohio saw more tornadoes in four hours on Memorial Day than is normal for the entire state in a year. People were worried about a lady who exchanged views of a windmill ceiling with a contestant in her 18th minute of fame. Only one person died and it could have been a LOT worse!

Jamie Simpson, James Spann, Mike Morgan, Damon Lane, Dave Freeman and Gary England are the six meteorologists for whom I have tremendous levels of respect. Jamie Simpson for having ripped into viewers who were complaining about Fox 45's coverage of the Memorial Day 2019 tornado in Dayton, Ohio interrupting the new episode of "The Bachelorette." James Spann for his coverage of the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak on ABC 33-40 and more specifically urging parents in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to stay sheltered and that if the principals of their child's school got angry over their students being late they could call him. Dave Freeman for giving advice on air during KSNW Channel 3's (the NBC affiliate in Wichita, Kansas) coverage of the May 4, 2007 tornado that hit Greensburg, Kansas. Dave told any children who were possibly home alone or with a babysitter and no doubt scared to death that they had to be brave and turn up the volume on the TV or the computer speakers so they could hear him as they took shelter. Dave also urged those kids to take shelter under something sturdy such as a workbench or the basement stairs as well as telling them to put on their winter coats and use a helmet to protect their heads or use blankets, pillows and mattresses for protection. Gary England for his coverage of the El Reno, Oklahoma tornado on May 31, 2013 on Oklahoma City's CBS affiliate KWTV Channel 9 and also urging two of the station's storm chasers Val Castor and David Payne to get out of the area when they were getting too close to the tornado and it looked like it wasn't moving. Mike Morgan for his coverage of both of the tornadoes that hit Moore, Oklahoma (May 3rd, 1999 and May 20th, 2013) on Oklahoma City's NBC affiliate KFOR Channel 4. Mike was left speechless by the May 3rd storm as it was the worst nightmare of every meteorologist: a large, violent and destructive tornado on the ground in a major metropolitan area. On May 20th, 2013 he admitted on air that he never wanted to say it in his position as the chief meteorologist but he ended up saying that it was May 3rd, 1999 all over again. Damon Lane for his coverage of the 2013 Moore, Oklahoma tornado on Oklahoma City's ABC affiliate KOCO Channel 5 as it affected him personally due to the fact that he lives in Moore. In an episode of a show on The Weather Channel called "Real Time Tornado" Damon talked about how he was juggling two roles that day: chief meteorologist and husband. Damon was text messaging his wife and urging her to get herself and their dogs into their storm shelter.

The Jim Cantore clip will always be my favorite. He is like a kid in a brand new candy shop. I also can get excited about and by this phenomena. The closer the strike and sound the better. Although it is not in this vid, over the years another weather phenomena that fascinates me is firenadoes.

I moved from St. Paul MN to Grand Rapids, MI for a few years and people there were freaking out over zero degrees which we're totally used to in Minnesota, so I'm with that weatherman at 2:40. I think Michiganders complain about the temperature too much because they also complained about 85 degrees and up as Minnesotans do too.
