In the Warboss novel, there is a Blood Axe called Da Genrul, and he keeps a caged human officer as a pet. He has given his ladz explicit instructions to not harm or kill this prisoner, and even lets him out for exercise. However, the officer is constantly humiliated, and kept to give tactical information to the orks that massacred his homeworld. The orks don't fight him, if he tries to run away, they catch him. If he tries to start a fight in the hopes of goading an ork to kill him, they just smear his face with shit. The novel has some bits from his perspective, and it's just fucking tragic. He wishes he was like Castellan Creed or Ciaphas Cain and tries to be a hero, but the orks broke him mentally, and he is stuck as their prisoner, a literal tool against everything he holds dear.
Orkz are often hilarious, as long as it isn't happening to you

The book is a great read. I've understood the passage with the hive mind showing anger to be meant as a warning to what happens when the nids actually gain interests beyond feeding instincts of the hive mind.

It's like I can imagine Jesus, if the dude actually existed and wasn't just Buddhism spreading to the Middle-East, would be pretty horrified seeing what Christianity became after he spent his life preaching peace and love.
It's horrific because the Tau seeing a religious deity of their ideology means that not only do the Gue'Vesa not get what they are trying to tell them, but they have started to deify the ideology and are creating a Warp Entity that represents the human interpretation, not the Tau philosophy.

I mean it's a "please join as a client race or submit to our interstellar law" deal. Their aim is almost always to just diplomatically take your world over time by being nice to you, but in regards to the notion of an Empire, you can't allow other dominant ideologies or power's to exist within your territory, and unless you have significant territory, your Empire won't be able to defend itself from outside (though there is obviously a balance between being able to take and hold territory without expending unsustainable resources).
The Tau are pretty much the best expanding Empire you want to run into because the actually give you an option. Unlike the Imperium which will just virus bomb your world clean if they don't like you.
The Tau are basically super advanced Roman's in this respect, and their expansion generally benefits the people included in it. But they are still an Empire, Empire's still seek to expand their domain so as to enforce their Pax upon the world and ensure the Empire itself remains the dominant one.

Worth pointing out that the mere veneration of chaos includes one rule, an unwilling sacrifice is more powerful than a willing sacrifice, ans a sacrificial betrayal is more powerful than a random sacrificial killing.
It's actually a big part of why Chaos was so interested in turning space marines to their cause, because every marine on marine kill represents a sacrifice on a scale big enough to give them all a serious stiff one on how dramatic and traitorous and atrocious it is just inherently.
So yeah, any time you see a word bearer making sacrificial offerings, odds are good it was someone who A) really did not want to be a sacrificial offering, and B) had actually come to trust the specific word bearer performing the sacrifice wouldn't do it to them.
Chaos doesn't just commit atrocity in its own worship, it deliberately cultivates it and compounds it to draw even more power out of it.
