I love how if i have any questions on any headphones i just look at you channel and always find a video and your so informative. I love it. Keep it up. I love your newer videos to! Very nice keep it up.
I've been waiting a long time for this one!
Me too
Picked it up for 250 cant wait for them to get here
Great review! You obviously really know what you're talking about! I'm really glad you came to the conclusion that you did as I've very recently bought these very headphones! Phil-UK.
DEAL ALERT: The AKG K712 Pro is $306 today from Amazon including their 15% off discount! www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/2ope5z/fyi_akg_k712_currently_for_306_with_amazons_15/
Nice review. Fantastic mid-range, good build, great soundstage, accurate as well as comfortable. The only issue I found is with the treble being a bit too upfront at times. Nothing major.
I like the treble boost. Really makes sibilant vocals stand out. I almost never end up with harsh mixes using these.
Great review. I own many headphones, also AKG. I recently bought the AKG K92 on Amazon. The price of this headphone is very low (I paid €41 for it) so I didn’t expect too much. Two days later, it was delivered. I tried it out with a variety of music in different genres. I’m really amazed how these ‘cheap’ AKG sounds. Closed back but still some noise from outside on average volume but these sound really amazing with great transients and a well balanced flat frequency response. I can really recommend these. You won’t regret buying one. I own headphones that are far more expensive but the AKG K92 holds up very well!
excellent review my man, subscribed.
Nice review, I couldn't help but notice you have the Queen of drum and bass at the center of your monitor
07:42 K712 sound!
I auditioned both of these and I definitely agree that the K712 has that more lower mid to mid bass emphasis that sounds generally warmer than the K612. That was immediately evident to me as soon as I switched between them. But maybe its just because I haven't had as much time on the 712 as the 612, or just because it's hard to match volume with the 712 having much lower impedance, but I couldn't really tell that the 712 had more detail or sound stage. The price difference, with the 712 costing more than twice the 612 where I live, may have had a role to play in slanting my assessment since the difference just didn't seem to be worth twice the money. So in the end, I took the 612 because I really couldn't tell that the 712 was that much more detailed, if at all, and just preferred the leaner analytical sound with more treble emphasis on the 612. I'm quite happy with the 612 now, and your reviews on both, along with other competitors, really helped narrow down that decision. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!
Welcome back, man :)
I rock the AKG K141 MK II's mostly at work. I alternate between those and my CIEMs :) great review dude!
Love this dude's channel.
even though this was posted some years back. Love your review!
I paid $250USD for this recently (in Hong Kong). REALLY nice headphones.
My review of the lovely AKG K712 Pro! For another good comparison (with a focus on gaming), why not check out Mad Lust Envy 's awesome gaming headphone roundup which also compares the K712, K612 and MA900! www.head-fi.org/t/534479/mad-lust-envys-headphone-gaming-guide-update-10-15-2014-beyerdynamic-t51i-added
Will you be trying out the bose ie2 any time soon?
lonegamer1717 I'm going to try out the Bose SoundTrue in-ear when I get the chance.
Congrats on finding a new favorite. As you've probably guessed I'm a bit of an AKG fan myself. After seeing your review I'm wondering what would have happen if i was so swap out my Q701 pads for the K712s. Have you tried going the tube route with the K712 yet? When I went to tubes I found it gave my Q701 some much needed life and took care of some of the sibilance depending on the tube I used.
He's the reason I decided to get the 712s. Love the soundstage =)
Well guys, I saw the K712 on sale on Amazon and bit the bullet. If all goes well I should have them just before xmas. I foresee a Q701 vs K712 shootout in the near future.
Very nice review, I am a fan of your reviews!! May I ask if the height of my ear is nearly 7cm, will my ears fit comfortably inside the ear cups? I remember the HD598s fit my ears well, but the ATH MSR7 cups are too small for me. Thank you!
Awesome reviews! So hoping you may be able to help. My go to home headphones were a pair of AKG 501’s but recently broke, in addition to the cable coming apart, years and years old. I used to be a huge headphonephile. I had some Grado SR80s (crushed in the move to Oz) Currently using Sony MDR-1000x which replaced my QC35s, which I just didn’t care for after a year with them (preferred the QC25 sonically) However I find that BT obviously do not have anywhere near the sonic power as “home” headphones. The Sonys are great for travelling and overall very decent sonically. So my question is would you suggest getting an Astell & Kern or Sony Digital Walkman to use with the MDR1000’s or suggest perhaps these newer AKGs? I’m considering Focals, AKG, Audio Technica, OPPO PM3, and Sony’s (under a grand) Could you give a recommendation for a pair of “home” cans (happy to get an amp as well). It’s just I’ve been so out of the audio word for over a decade. My home system I still have a pair of (vintage by now) B&W 601’s lol. If you have time to give some advice that would be awesome! I know you are busy!! Keep it up mate!
signed. a grower. replaces my Beyerdynamic 770pro for everyday use more and more. especially good for mixing. I've had shootouts with over 10 popular/more high end headphones on Prism Sound & RME interfaces so I could compare them side by side. this one came out on top
Hello, can you please do the Sennheiser IE80? I really want to hear your opinion for that. Thank you for always making great reviews and videos!!
How does the K712 compare to the Fedilio X2?
just ordered a K712 and been hearing a lot of good things about the Fedilio and wonder if superior.
Hey lachlan you videos are amazing, they have influenced me to buy many products. What would be the best headphone (open or closed back, preferably open) for treble under $200, in the AKG series or any other company??? Thanks
Hi. Awesome reviews. Love the channel. Right now i am between AKG 712 pro and the HD 650. I use the headphones mainly for music and gaming. Do you have any extra advice between those 2 headphones? anyone can help me in this decision? Thanks!!
I would love to see the RHA MA-750. Also, I wonder, what do you think are the best 300-500 dollar earphones? Yeah I get that there isn't to much point in dishing up that much cash when you could get 2 or 3 different sounding 100 dollar earphones, but I got the Sennheiser IE80 as a christmas present a while back, and I'm pretty impressed.
Love your work Lachlan!! How did k712 compare to the dt880? in your opinion which ones are more detailed/neutral?
Interestingly enough, the K-612 is the nicest looking of the bunch. Wish they'd tried a little harder with the 712. Just looks like an orange version of the Q701, which I would recommend to you. I bet you'd like it.
will you be looking into the k7xx? it would be interesting to hear your take on it once it's available
is AKG K712 Pro good for mixing and mastering ? can i get a good result with it , thank you so much for the video
Hi, Thanks for the immensely informative review! You wrote in one of your replies that the bass on the 612's & 712's are "SIMILAR", meaning "almost alike but not exactly alike". Could you please expound on that and give a more detailed description of how they differ from one another? Thanks again! :)
diegito1030 The K712 has more lower mid-bass, whereas the K612 feels like it's more sub-bass and not much warmth in the mid-bass. That means that the K712 is a bit more rounded sounding for things like electronic synths etc. They both have good bass, so it really depends on whether you want a dryer, more V-shaped sound like the K612, or more of a musical, easy going sound like the K712.
Another great review, well done!
I've noticed you haven't reviewed any planar magnetic headphones. Would we see anything from say HiFiMan or Audeze in the future?
I always want to buy a planar, but the weight holds me back. With the new lighter planars coming out I'm definitely curious but want to have a listen before I do a blind buy!
There's a guy named Lucas who follows you on FB. He lives in your area and I think he has a pretty good repertoire of gear. You could hook up with him for some auditioning. He's a cool guy. I bought the Havi B3s from him after he lend them to me to try.
***** I know there are a bunch of peeps around my area, I have to find the time to actually meet up with 'em -___-
Got a AKG K712pro in July 2013 and now after about 18 months and approx 100 hours of use it seems like the headset starts to sound better. I’d like your opinion about what some call a ’settle in’ period. As in… it takes a while for the coils to warm up or something.
Or… is this all ’between the ears’ psychologically speaking. ;)
cheers
Thank you very much for the detailed review of these headphones. It seems as though many people use headphones such as these for casual listening. However they are really designed to have a flat frequency response in order to obtain a true picture of an audio sample. I have been considering a pair for my recording studio as another reference source. The goal is to be able to go back and forth from the headphones to my monitors to ensure I am not coloring a mix towards one frequency or another. If I am interpreting your explanation of their sound correctly, you say they seem very flat and accurate across the entire frequency domain? Thanks!
They are pretty balanced, but seem tuned to give slightly more emphasis to vocals. It's hard to say if this is more 'flat' than the K612 but I'd feel good about monitoring with either. :)

i wonder how many syllable does your name consist... Good description on headphone review :)
Hi Lachlan,
I bought the HD600 but wasnt realy happy with them.
the sound was great.
but lacks in the bass and the highs where sometimes a little to hard.
and the soundstage was quit small.
I wonder if these are the more proper ones for me.
mainly the bass with more punch that goes deeper and the better soundstage+imaging.
I know you did not review the hd600 but i think you get enough experiance with the hd650 witch has a little more bass as u probable knoews.
thanking you in advance.
Micha
I really like your detailed and technical explanation, it gives me imagery that help me deciding, that is what most video on CZcams doesn't talk about.
Which would you recommend, the AKG K712, Sennheiser HD600 or a Hifiman HE400S? I listen to a lot of pop, jazz and classical. Thanks.
lachlanlikesathing, do you recommend K712 for home studio? Mix, master etc.
Did you get the Akg k7xx from massdrop?
I am wondering which open headphone fits me the best. my current audio equiement is a se215, used a UE600 before the wire broke. budget under $250?
Totally agree ,,, good headphone
Could you please do the sennheiser momentum in-ear?
Im testing the Philips Fidelio X2 now. But i would be nice to test ut the AKG K712 Pro.
I´m testing my AKG K712 and K702 and still cant decide which i should use later. Hip Hop and Metal sounds more fun on the K712. For the Vocals i think i lean more towards the K702. When I compare them in gaming (like CSGO, Pubg, BF1) i think the positional audio and Soundstage are a little bit better on the K702 and gives me a bit of an advantage but thats just me. Currently im running them from my onboard soundcard. My DAC/AMP (AUNE X1S) should arrive next week. If someone had experience with both of them pls let me know, i still want to know.
I have to admit that i got the K712 on sale for 165€ where i still bought the K702 for 142€ to know how they sound.
Hi TURBO_DamnYes..!!!myself being new to the audiophile headphones.., I really got stuck up now between k702 and k712.. My music is composed of all genre, (little more on concerts) and mostly movies too. Does 712 are really better than 702 and worth that extra price?? Kindly share ur experience..!!! Thanks at lot..
Do you have any surround sound headphone good for watching movie to recommend?
Hi! I saw than two sides of the headphone got the stretch ropes for adjusting with head. How can I get one for replacement if they are broken?
Hey lachlan. Did you manage to grab one of the 7XX massdrop units?
Great review! Personally i like the mic you use for talking as opposed to the one you use during the design section of the review. Still my favorite reviewer :D
It's actually the same mic, it's just that the difference I sit from it changes the sound :) I didn't get the 7xx since I didn't think it would be all that different from what I currently have. But I'm definitely curious.
Whoa I had no idea. They sound completely different. When you're farther away it gives it a much more personal feel which I think suits your style more.
They'll be coming for me around christmas. Can't wait :D
PhearzMeh I think it might be also that when I do voice overs they are usually a little more scripted since I can easily have notes in front of me. It's always a tricky balance. Let us know how you like your K7xx :3
***** It might be just you changing the way you're talking. The cut is very drastic from your intro to your design section.
Yea for sure! :D If it's anything like these i'm sure i'll be really happy. What a steal for 200
I'd like to see a comparison of the K712 vs the MDR-Z7.
lachlan what do you think of the mdr-z7?
Hi Lachlan! Are the K712s still made in Austria? I know that the K701 was made in Austria but the production was later moved to China. Thanks!
Great vid.
Do you use an amp with the MA900? or straight from the iMac?
I use my O2!
Great review, figured the k712 would perform as such versus the k612.
Lachlan I'm guessing that you use the k612 with 1x gain on the o2/odac? Or does the k612 need more gain?
Yep, 1x gain :)
***** Thanks!
The guy's in love with the K612
I would like to use my headphones for gaming, movies & music listening. I have used the HD 650 and immediately fell in love with it's sound signature. Yet I recently tried out the Q701 and found them to be much richer in detail.
With the K712, can I expect the same overall sound signature of the HD 650 (dark/warm), with the wider soundstage and detail of the Q701?
+TurboPummel Hi, your question interest me. If you can tell me if you got this headphone and how it end up :)
(good or bad and if you needed a amp). Best regard and merry christmas
jjjdgd5 | I stuck with the HD 650 and an ASUS Essence STX II.
I extensively tested 10 different cans, the HD 650 were the only one that delivered HiFi sound for me. Love them and will never give them away. Amplifier is a must though. (STX II already has one onboard).
Not sure if you're still curious, but K712's aren't necessarily dark, but they are supposed to have more bass than Q701's (I haven't tried Q701's) and they still have a really nice soundstage, and really good detail.
Which game specifically? If it is rainbow 6 siege, Q701 beats K712 hands down imo. To me sound in r6 siege is more spacious and accurate, like where and how are the enemies moving in or away. Even tho just a bit but that makes a whole lot of difference in games where sound analyze is so important.
Q701 when listening to music does not have the bass like k712. There is a video of bass mod on youtube, however. I have not tried the mod tho. People said Q701's bass are almost identical to K712 after the mod. (be aware 712 are not bassy itself)
If your game is not cs go or r6 siege. Like for example CoD, or any open world games where sounds are everywhere. K712 actually sounds better.
This is just my personal preference. Sound reproduction to ears is really personal :-)
I'd go with Beyerdynamic DT990 pro 250 ohm all the way, it's perfect for gaming, movies and music, and perform well even without an amp/dac, running almost flawless with any cellphone(at max volume) and with the opportunity to pair with an amp later, it's very good.
Audio-Technica MSR7 for closed back model(haven't tested Beyers Dt770 yet...) but it need dac/proper EQ to fix some weirdness in the frequency...
Could you review the alpine headphones.
Are these the same sound quality as the K702? :) The K702 on amazon does not see mto have the bumps on the headband.
Hi guys are these good for gaming?, Ben using gaming headphones for years but my friend has reccomended trying out these types of headphones for a more immersive natural sound, how would these sound for fps and games like witcher 3 etc?
Would the Dragonfly Black a decent amp for the Akg k712pro?
Wonder how it sounds compared to 701? Which sound very bright. I prefer K273 Pro, which is much more neutral but not as comfy.
do you use dac or amp? you should check out fiio x1
Can you make a video about K3003, please?
hey what do u think about Focal spirit professional ??
用什么推的?
Great videos! I'm in the process of trying to buy home audio headphones. I'll be using the headphones for watching TV & Movies, CD's, vinyl records, and computer use (youtube, spotify, etc) and want to know what is your opinion that'ill work best for me. I listen to music from hard rock, metal, punk, roots reggae, dub reggae, jazz, and hawaiian. I'm also thinking of combinding my headphones (been thinking about the Grado Prestige Series SR80e) with a headphone Amp (Thinking about the Bravo Audio V2 Class A 12AU7 Tube Multi-Hybrid). My budget is from $100 - $150 for the headphones. Can you help me decide? Thank you in advance.
what are the difference between AKG k712 vs k702 vs k612 ??.
Just out of curiosity does you hear touch the driver? Are not too shallow ear cups like the K550 or the K551?
Would you recommend sennhiesser gsx 1000 with akg712 pro?
can you use it without a amp
Here in Germany I can currently pick up a K712 pro or HD 650 for US-$ 300 each. Which headphone is superior in terms of it's technicial capabilities? Which one has the better price-performance ratio at this point? I usually got problems with harsh treble on headphones. For instance the HD 700 and DT 990 pro were unbearable for me. As someone liking the HD 650's sound signature, will I run into problems with the K712 pro in terms of harsh peaks?
I hope you can give some information on this Lachlan. Thank you in advance!
TurboPummel I'm probably totally too late, hd600 and the hd650 is considered quite laid back, so no treble issues. I can't say anything about k712.
Does anyone know the size of the driver that this headphone uses? 40mm or 50mm?
Just curious to know if anyone has ever used this for gaming as well, heard studio headphones can be amazing for gaming as well especially if I could use these for music moves and gaming :)
hello, is a fiio e10k sufficient to drive this?
***** Heres an idea for a video, grab all the IEMs you've reviewed since you went the crowd sourcing route and do a large overall comparison/slash buyers guide. Have it up before say Xmas or the end of the year. The end of the year might be best, maybe title it Lachlans Year 2014 In Review.
I'll back that idea!
That's actually the one thing I was pretty much planning to do! I've just been thinking about how to structure it.
***** excited about this!
lachlanlikesathing Tell me more about your objective 2 and where to buy it.
I´m really undecided between these and the Sennheiser´s HD 600 and HD650. Which one is more detailed, more neutral, better bass and better soundstage?
Don't get either. Have them both coupled with the schiit bifrost and asgard 2. Sounds great... after a couple hours especially with glasses.. my god. It's raping my fucking face!
can you put other pads on them?
I'm in the same situation. From what I understand k712pro is better for gaming out of the 3 of them, and since Im gonna use them alot for gaming that's what Im gonna go for.
K712 is somehow neutral and warm at the same time, they sound so so so sweet, and detail, fuck, the detail!, Amazeballs
How do these compare to the k702 65th anniversary edition? Thanks.
A quick glance and I thought that Hideo Kojima was reviewing the new headphones I bought but no, you are a lot younger haha.
I have the K701, would the K712Pro be a big upgrade ?
AKG K545? Its quite a bit different in terms of sound signature and size compared to the K550, and quite frankly I prefer its tight bass and lively highs to the Momentum and NAD Viso while trying them at the local headphone store
What headphone would u recommend for $300 usd max? Preferably bright one.
How does this compare to the Hd600?
What is the diameter of the ear cups
Lachlan, what type of music do you use to test headphones in general?
Parco Fung I just listen to music. But I made this playlist that gives you some idea of some of my favourite tracks for specific testing. czcams.com/play/PLDp6fyvziq0jIFlKRxhZJW7E2sZpXW1Wr.html
Any better options for a $250 open-back reference neutral-sounding headphones in 2022?
Never had AKG headphones but those I bought and can only hope that they gonna deliver. I'm curious how they will react for my tube amp
Great headphones. Had mine for 7 years. The stock cable gave out a few months back so I bought an aftermarket replacement. Tip from a long term user, DONT hang them by the leather band. Hang them by the orange band. The suspension system they use will wear out much much much quicker if you hang them by the leather band.
nice review Lach, I was waiting for this review for a long time. very intimidating to get 712pro after this ,but I don't think that sound signature is for me since I'm a neutral fan. I have few questions for you, do you think 712pro has excellent bass extension like 612pro ? does 712 pro has that V shaped sound signature with little recessed midrange compared to 612pro? is it mellow sounding ? since I'm a neutral fan what might be the better recommendation for me since I already own 612 ? what do you think about dt880? btw I don't think hd600 gonna work out for me since I found it more mellow and laid back sounding.
and for the upcoming reviews, if you can review Soundmagic hp150/200, that would be great since they are little underrated. and may be if you can review Yamaha MT220, I'd really appreciate that. thanks :)
The AKG K712 Pro is supposed to be pretty neutral since it was designed for studio use. I'm a fan of neutral sound signatures myself, and I would have no qualms about buying the K712. As for the Beyerdyamic DT880, Lachlan did a video way back when that you can check out to get his thoughts on it.
The 712 Pro fills in the area in the midrange where the 612 is recessed, so it sounds a bit more mellow. In terms of bass they are similar, but the 712 has more treble clarity. The DT880 is a great headphone, but it should have a very strong upper treble spike and a stronger bass response than the K612 (more v-shaped). I'm afraid I can't really think of a direct upgrade over the K612. But if you love neutral, maybe save up to get the Sennheiser HD800 one day? :3
*****
I heard hd800 is extremely bright. didn't you find it bright ? honestly very bright signatures are not my preference either since I didn't like the Q701 too.
adminmovie The HD800 didn't sound very bright to me, at least not compared to things like the Audio Technica AD series or Sony's older full size headphones. I haven't heard the Q701 but I'm surprised that you would like the K612 and not the Q701.
+lachlanlikesathing
I'm ready to buy a pair of these but I've noticed that some stores offer an "X" model (2458X00140 ) and other stores a "Z" model (2458Z00140). What is the difference?
Hey Lachlan, For the O2/ODAC combo, what is the typical volume range you use on the 1x gain (like xx o'clock to xx o'clock)? I'm thinking of acquiring the combo and got a K702 (more or less same internals as these K712's), and trying to get a good grasp of the range of the 1x gain setting. My tracks are mostly modern recordings which I don't think I will have a problem with, but I also do have some classical and lower volume mastered tracks and I'm not sure how they'd do with them. A used one I'm looking at is 1x gain and 5x gain, and I am sure 5x is not practical for most headphones with ODAC as source... so just want to make sure if 1x gain would be enough for my needs. Thanks!
Typical is 9 to 12 o clock I find with almost everything I own that isn't above 100 ohms. 1x is actually too high for some IEMs. Go figure!
***** Wow, even with the K712's the max you go to is 12 o clock (even on quiet tracks?) on 1x gain? That's surprising, I thought you may need more volume range for these on unity gain! I got a MA900, Creative Aurvana Live and the K702's currently, so I guess the 1x gain would be enough... too bad there is a wasted gain setting at x5 (no idea why they have that setting on a desktop version) but maybe I'll have a weaker source I may want to use it with later.
Hi, could do a review for hd598? I want to know how hd598 compare to ma900. thx~
Which company distributed your Objective2?
hd600 or akg 712 pro?
K712s or Sennheiser HD 650?? please help.
Would you reccomend these AKG headphones or the Grado 325e? I listen to mainly rock and metal genre of music and heard great reviews about both of these headphones. Just wanting to get an opinion.
I've read on Forums about how amazing the AKG K712 Pro is for mostly all metal genres. For that reason alone, I'm buying them.
Hi lachlan! Planning to get these headphones but I am not sure what amp I should buy to drive these. Any recommendations for a amp that gives me the biggest bang for my buck? Wallet is a little light after getting these headphones but I want to be able to do these headphones justice with a proper amp.
Same Question Here
Best budget amp would be JDSlabs Atom, that thing is incredible. Amp/dac combo I'd go with massdrop NuForce uDAC-5, but I'm not too sure if that unit is that good as massdrop don't send to my country, oh well, worth trying.
Are 250 usd a good price for them?
If you can, try the HiFiman He-400i. They've replaced my K712 :p
k712 or ath-r70x?
***** Thanks for the amazing review.
I'm planning to buy this headphone & I was wondering how it would sound with a Fiio X5 + Fiio E12 combo?
Rupam Shyamal should sound just fine I'd imagine, no first hand experience myself
*****
okay. & how do this headphone sound in games & movies ? :)
Rupam Shyamal Great, though sometimes it might be just a bit aggressive in the mids / highs.
*****
Great. and what about the bass punch?
Rupam Shyamal www.massdrop.com/buy/akg-k181-dj-ue-reference-class-headphones really cheap here atm
my k712pro right side has a anoying rattle when bassy sound is playing how do i fix it
I can get the k712 pro for €180 and the HD 600 for €280.
Should I go for Sennheiser?
