    I’m 32 and have never done hurdles before...We just moved recently and the high school has an open track that I get to use while my kids are practicing softball and baseball. I attempted to do one of the low hurdles and I kept getting scared right before it mainly because I didn’t know the mechanics of doing a hurdle and didn’t want to hurt myself. I’m definitely going to work on these drills every time I go to the track now to build up to it. Thank you so much!

    This was a great demonstration for drills and learning how to hurdle ! I've been hurdling since 7th grade and I'm currently a sophomore now. Everyone tells me I have the speed for a great hurdler but the only problem I have is getting that form down! It seems my problem is snapping my trail leg down , it just seems that I'm gliding is what they describe it as, and the other problem I have is , my arm doesn't exactly cross over my body but goes out instead, all season I've been working on it but the arms fall into place after I go over the hurdle but once I'm in motion going over the hurdle they are both out, almost like a bird lol. Do you have any tips to help with my arms ? Thank you!

    • @coachwelly
      @coachwelly  Před 6 lety +4

      If you take the race as a sprint and not "hurdles" per se that will help. You are a sprinter with obstacles in your way. If you glide over the hurdles its because you are probably jumping and allowing your arms to move when they want. You have to sprint through, and off each hurdle with your arms. When you start next season's training, and you start hurdling, focus on keeping your arms quick, and tight to your body, so that it translate over when the hurdles are correct height. Make sense?

      Nelson Gonzales look at the intermediate video. there is a drill called 15, 18, 21, etc. start the kid off with the 15 foot drill. once they become more technically sound and start running more, increases to 18, and carry that out until they are actually doing this at the correct distance

      @@coachwelly sorry. But this a race. It is timed. Speed is the #1 factor. 2nd is flexibility. 3rd is body balance. 4th is endurance. I see these hurdlers getting tired in races. Their tall and trying to use their height as an advantage by compromising speed. Too tall is as much a disadvantage as being to short in this race. For it is a race of speed first and last. The first thing that should be taught is speed. Today tall slow runners attempt the hurdles, only to find they must develop speed. So they sacrifice the speed and attempt to use their height as an advantage, only to learn later its not an advantage if their slow. All those movements you posted were and are useless..! Hip socket flexing is all they need. Those movements you posted are time and energy consuming. A good hurdler must also be a good sprinter..! Good luck.

Thats why if you look at the title, it is for people that are learning the foundation of hurdles. Yes all hurdlers must have speed first, but if they dont have a foundation, it will be ugly.
