In this Pro Tips 4U sports training video, Dominique Arnold, who holds the fourth-fastest all-time performance in the 110-meter hurdles, goes over How to Approach the First Hurdle. Learn the proper form and execution as you approach the first hurdle. What putting on the brake and gas means, why you want to keep your stride underneath you and not out in front. Why you need a high hip position and why you want to punch the knee over instead of kicking with your foot. Dominique also talks about being patient and running off the hurdle.
Dominique Arnold holds the fourth-fastest all-time performance in the 110 meter hurdles, with a time of 12.90 seconds. In competition, he finished fourth at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics and took Bronze in the 60 meter hurdles at the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Athletics. He also took Bronze at the 2001 IAAF Grand Prix Final and Silver at the 2005 World Athletics Final.
Dominique's instructional videos for Pro Tips 4U focus on hurdling and include tips on approaching the first hurdle, race strategy and what to do if you hit a hurdle.

Well I ran hurdles and coached a few young athletes. This presentation, while substantively good is presented in such a discombobulated manner that it is difficult to follow.I always tried to emphasize keeping the crotch above the level of the hurdle and having an "attack" posture/attitude with that last step before the first barrier.Above all feel balanced.Having said that, the best instructional book ever written on hurdling is "The Hurdlers Bible" by the excellent Wlibur Ross (now deceased). The books are hard to find(think Amazon)and expensive but worth the cost. One other thing..if the athlete is capable, going from an eight step to a seven step approach makes a world of difference. This guy never even mentioned the number of steps to the first hurdle.

Kept getting a three step in practice BEFORE a meet (literally ten minutes before my race) this is because my legs are fresh and during practice I only get to work on hurdles AFTER a sprint workout and have little energy to attack. Once I get into my race my body takes me back to a four step so the entire race I'm fighting with myself to get a 3 step. I have 2 races left this season, let's hope I can get in the rhythm.

Thank you so much Dominique. I was a 220 female hurdler for 4 years in high school. I was a natural. My son is a 310 hurdler (way taller than I was), and he is having problems as a freshman. It's good for him to see that what I show him is what a professional like yourself is also showing him. I can't wait for him to get home so I can show him this video about brakes and gas because I keep telling him that he's sitting in the hurdles. His coach is a good one, and telling him he doesn't have to "jump" over the hurdles just glide like I tell him because of his height. I was only 5'4, and he's somewhere like 5'10-5'11. He does a lot of "up downs" like in basketball and that severely slows his time. So thank you.

Thanks so much for this video! I have a really big problem with taking a giant step just before the hurdle, which makes me "put on the brakes," lean back, and drive my knee up instead of forward. I have to run both 110m and 300m tomorrow, so I hope I can make at least a few adjustments tonight.

One of THE BEST sprint hurdle technique tips I have ever seen. He hit it 100% out of the park. So many kids want to put the foot in front and “long jump” over the first hurdle. It ruins the rest of the race. That is why they are slow - even if they are capable of running FAST. Thank you for such excellent advice!

It's sad on how I just sprained my ankle, while practicing on the hurdles at school for PE and a main reason why could be that they just told us to start off with or dominant leg and jump. I'm looking at these videos now and majority of the girls did it wrong. One girl was just swinging both feet over. I came to this realization after I come home to a sprained ankle and then being told by a track person herself, that we were doing it all wrong and if you don't do it right you can get seriously injured. Well this video helps.

You can do it. This video is gold! The key becomes leaning from the waist and staying tall. I am 5' 8", and consistently dropped mid 14s in the highs throughout high school with terrible training. Granted, my legs were extremely powerful and I had an awful lot of speed.

+kitkat warrior pony It's really gonna depend on your height. High school height (in open field races) are 39." If your hips can't quite clear that, you're likely to have to get up higher than you would like to. I found that if you're aggressive enough.....attack that hurdle...you're still better off than at least half the field.
