- Shchedryk / Щедрик. Carol of the Bells. Original Ukrainian Version with English and Ukrainian Lyrics
✽ “Shchedryk” (the original “Carol of the Bells”) with lyrics I’ve translated from Ukrainian into English, as well as with original lyrics in Ukrainian.
“Shchedryk” was arranged by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych at the beginning of the 20th century. The song is based on the traditional Ukrainian folk chant welcoming the New Year (“shchedrivka”). In 1921, the Ukrainian National Chorus sung the song in the United States to a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall. Later, Peter J. Wilhousky rearranged the melody for orchestra and wrote the new lyrics in English thus creating “Carol of the Bells”. The original “Shchedryk” by Leontovych was intended to be sung a cappella by mixed four-voice choir.

♫ Lyrics in English:
Shchedryk, shchedryk, shchedrivochka
Here flew the swallow from afar
Started to sing lively and loud
Asking the master to come out
Come here, oh come, master - it’s time
In the sheepfold wonders to find
Your lovely sheep have given birth
To little lambs of great worth
All of your wares are very fine
Coin you will have in a big pile
All of your wares are very fine
Coin you will have in a big pile
You have a wife
Fair as a dove
If not the coin, then the chaff
You have a wife fair as a dove

One fact that Leontovych (the original songwriter) was killed by russians because they don't like the idea of spreading Ukrainian culture over the world. Also thanks for reaction 🤗
Yeah, 1919 -1923 another war for independence with bolsheviks after collapse of russian empire. Took them more than 1 million troops and 4 years to take us alone.
wow, this song is more than just a song, it carries so much weight
@@UNCLEMOMO indeed, here is a short documentary (11:34 min length) about this specific subject, for anyone who is interested. There are also answers where you might've heard this song before )

Thank YOU! I send greeting back: wishing for Peace!
In Ukraine, children sometimes still go from house to house and sing this song. In return, the owners must give them money or sweets.
And not only kids) adults used to go from house to house in special costumes, with big star and singing these kind of songs
Yesss!!!
Yeah, adults do that as well 😊😊
@@sweetcherrybloom Yes!
this song is from my small homeland - Podillia! it is sung by carolers on Christmas holidays, like many others. It is still pre-Christian, so it is not Christmas, but New Year's. Moreover, in those days, the ancestors of Ukrainians celebrated the New Year in the spring, which is why the song mentions a swallow that flew in.
Thank you so much for this reaction, Uncle Momo! You always bring a smile to my face! :) And also, thank you so much for your support of Ukraine. This really means A LOT!
It’s easy to see that you have my heart…but I need it back one in a while ❤️ I know you’ll take great care of it Eileen
Like, this is probably the most famous Ukrainian song in the world, but not everyone knows its origin
it's amazing that they do not

Thanks for the wonderful reaction. This is one of the most ancient Ukrainian folk songs because it was written during the pagan celebration of the new year in the spring.
it a lovely song that many have heard but wouldn't know it's origins
Always feel proud of our culture in moments like this.
Momo, thank you for your kindness.
The song goes back to those times (or maybe even earlier) when Rus' was not yet baptized. From ancient pre-Christian era. For the population of Ruthenia (Rus', Ukraine) at that time, the new year began in the spring, that is, when all nature woke up and when the peasants began their year of growing various grains. ( and such kind of songs called vesnyanky, special, ceremonial spring songs which were performed at the beginning of field work). So that's why in the original text we could hear such words like "Shchedryk, shchedryk, shchedrivochka" - shchedryk is such a bird, which flies in the end of the March, same with words "прилетіла ластівочка" what means "a swallow flew in" - because it also came in the beginning of the spring. Leontovych found this song in Ukrainian folklore and created an awesome arrangement for it.
Personally for me it is very powerful thing cause song that is more than 1000 years old still sounds in our country and around the world.
Thank you Momo for your support! Thank you for your reactions to songs by Ukrainian artists!
1000 years old wow and still standing strong with the younger generations keeping it alive
I was just going to mention how really ancient the song is, you were quicker - thanks 🙏

'Shchedryk' has been performed millions of times, as a Ukrainian Christmas carol became a classic worldwide over the last hundred years. Now it is widely known as 'Carol of the Bells'
Author of "Carol of the Bells" was assasinated by Soviet agents just few years later, as they hated that Ukrainian culture is spreading (as they tried to erase it in USSR).
Thank you ♥️
it is used as a Christmas song now. But originally it is a new year song. And the reason the birds return during the new year (as they sing in this song) is because during the pre-Christian time, our ancestors celebrated the new year in spring. So potentially, these lyrics (or more original variations) might be older than Christianity in Ukraine.
Wow
Dear Uncle Momo, thank you! It is good surprise, that you find this song now! But it is so nice, that your reaction to this song was not lost in the past! Might be you know, that concert of 100-hundred years of "Shchedryk" was in Carnegie Hall last week! The event was co-hosted by Martin Scorsese and Ukrainian-American actress Vera Farmiga. This song is in movies: Die Hard 2: Die Harder, Garry Potter, Alone Home... might be more, but I found these. Actually, "shchedrivkies" are spesial songs, which we sing on New Year to call success and rishness to all homes. We have "koliadkies" - Christmas songs (to glory God) and "shchedrivkies" (shchedrik-sccedrik-shchedrivochka). I am not sure, that I could explane, but we selebrate Bounteous Evening on the night 13-th to 14-th January. We go to freinds homes to sow wheat (or other corns), whishing that new year to be rich. 😍❤🌻
like you said it's been in so many film and the fact that this is still living in this day and age. speaks volumes
@@UNCLEMOMO Also, they forgot to mention that lyrics about spring comming is not surprising, because when Schedryk was created - New Year was celebrated at the 1st of March and only later moved to winter (which is now "Old New Year" and 13-14th January)..

Thanks man! This song is amazing! Glory to Ukraine!
thanks for all your lovely words and support! you are the best!!! The antiquity of this song can be understood from the lyrics.. once upon a time, the New Year came with the arrival of spring - March 1!!! The swallow is the harbinger of the New Year and congratulates the owner!!
You're the best!
Thank you so much for your reaction and support!🤗
my pleasure Natalia hope your staying safe
I think this is the best translation of the original Ukrainan lyrics. BTW the word "Shedryk" comes from "shedryj', which means "generous'. So this song is literally about wishing wellfare to a good master or rather farmer. In Ukraine the second name of Christmas is "Generous evening" and it comes from pre-chistian times. But if you analize the original lyrics you'll find that they are actually about... spring :) Kinda interesting thing telling us about the ancient traitions of Ukrainians.
PS Even though i do love Eileen's voice and appearance, i like the rock version of this song more:

Some of the lyrics go as follows:
A dream passes by
"where shall we sleep tonight?".
"In a warm cottage, where there's a small baby, there we shall go..."
The question "Where shall we sleep", "a warm cottage", "a dream"... Sad words in today's context of war.
very true. the word relate into today's time
I was hoping that someone will write about this 🙂

And frankly, this is legitly the best arrangement of this song I've ever heard. Eileen did a tremendous job translating and performing "Shchedryk". You can hear “swallow flew in” in the lyrics because the song goes deep to the paganizm period and the celebration was early spring. the tradition is to get dressed in the strict traditional costumes (several rolles for the groop), go to neibouhood houses sing the carolls (several stages: to call homeowners, to greet, to with smth to each family member), spray some seeds, get some treat (candies, fruits, cackes, money as well))
We do it for Xmas and NY nowadays)

Thank you for your attention to our culture and songs.
It is very pleasant and important for Ukraine!
To put things into perspective this is indeed an old folk song celebrating the new year from the time when the new year began in spring, not in winter. Hence the references to the swallows and other spring references. The song was then adopted to celebrate the new year in winter. And when it made its way into the US it was adopted for the Christmas season. The original Ukrainian version has no mention of Christmas, bells or carols... And for those who like complexities, in Ukraine this song is not sung on Dec 31 or Jan 1, but on Jan 13, i.e. the date of the new year as per the old Julian calendar.
thank you Roma for educating my channel

Ah, finally, you drew attention to "Shchedryk" of Eileen - I once became a her admirer because of this work. And yes, this is the music we are proud of, because it brought us up, and this is who we are. My grandfather taught conservatory disciplines, and I remember with what delight he appreciated this masterpiece of choral polyphony. He called "Shchedryk" of Leontovych an absolute model of the score. Even though he was faithful to Bach.
