    Wow. Another older gamer here! 😉. Excellent video. I got an i7 9700/RTX3060Ti 32Gb RAM. Quest 3 (with water in the USB C port, as Meta report every time I use the headset). Now I’m using my Q2. My fps are 89 most of the time. It drops in the finish straight and in the parade lap. Rain it’s a fantastic add on for iRacing. I’m happy.

      Hi, thank you for the support, much appreciated.
      I think the water in port thing is due to charging with the cable attached to the PC? I don't do that, but I have heard of plenty of people that it effects. If you can run your Q3 without having to charge it while it's connected to the PC, this may solve your issue.
      The warm up lap does tend to be an FPS killer. Could be that you need to turn down spectators? Set it to low if you haven't already.

    Great summary. In addition, I’ve found its track specific. Example I can run full SSR in rain at Fuji or Brands and it runs perfectly. Same settings for Sebring and it’s a drop of 20%. So there’s that factor. I test this with GT3’s and 20 cars, running Pimax Crystal at native resolution 90hz. SSR is beautiful, but for me it depends on track.

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 6 měsíci

      Thank you for the feedback, yes, I can believe that. I have often seen that some tracks are much better optimised than others, and some of the newer ones are a nightmare to optimise in VR.
      Did I get an email from you today about Crystal settings? I haven't had chance to respond, but I will do soon.

    Have you messed with Nvidia Reflex in iRacing at all?
    I have an RTX 4080 (paired with a 5800X3D) and Reverb G2 and have done loads of tweaking, watching countless videos and reading the iRacing forum VR guide PDF in its entirety and spending a couple days solely to test settings. Your video regarding 90hz settings was very well put together and I shall compare your settings with mine.
    I noticed a significant smoothness with Reflex + boost, I’m assuming due to the lesser input lag. I tried all 3 combinations and just with my perception and the OpenXR toolkit frame times, I just found Reflex + boost to work best. I believe the iRacing guide PDF recommended it as well.

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 2 měsíci

      I have actually been using it since Season 3 started and I was encountering some issues on the grid with more than 35 cars. Someone suggested turning it on and it does seem to have helped with this issue. I too am using Reflex + Boost.
      However, some users have encountered issues with this setting, causing lots of frame drops, so it does seem to work for some systems, but not for others.

    Amazing video. Im in the process of planning my next desktop for VR and was trying to discover the best option within my budget. I was afraid anything less than the 4070ti super would not be able to deal with the Meta Quest 3 at good resolution and you just proved that is not the case. In using an i5!

      I am so glad you found this video helpful. Don't forget that VR is a sum of all it's parts, so connection to the PC via a cable is probably best, and for that you will need a decent port on your mainboard, preferably USB C.
      But yes, the i5 will do the job and the 4070Super continues to amaze me with it's performance potential .

      @@OlderGamersPerspective Yeah im currently using a cable over regular 3.0 USB connector. Probably gonna migrate to the USB-C one on the new motherboard.
      I found your video very, very helpful. I would sub twice if I could. And like it 10 times.
      There are good videos about CPU benchmarking on vr out there, but almost every video uses 4080 - 4090 GPUs. This is not viable for me in the country I currently live in, the prices really skyrocket due to taxes.
      Just know the impact of your content: due to your considerations I've just changed my plans. I'll get a DDR-5 compatible mobo, and I'll be going with the i5 13600 which is pretty affordable here comparing to other options. Now im not afraid of settling for the 4070 super. This gives me room to upgrade down the road, and thanks to your work I know I won't be bottlenecked right at the start.

      @@shockinho That all sounds like an excellent plan, and thank you for the feedback, please be aware, this really does help me when considering what videos to make.
      And yes, the amount of youtube videos which feature 4090's is a massive frustration to me, it's like, if I could afford that, my problems would probably ALL be solved, but the 4070Super was really at the edge of my budget, and only really possibly because I could make some of the money back selling the 3070.
      DDR5 ram was on my wish list, but when I built this system, all the way back in 2023 (lol), it was just to rare and cost too much, plus the mainboards that could handle DDR5 were too much, but thankfully that has all changed now, so you should have a really rocking system.
      I have to say, since upgrading to 4070Super, on my i5 13600, iRacing has looked like a new game, and some of the track details I now see, on tracks I have used for years, suddenly stand out to me so much, I often feel like I am sightseeing rather than racing.
      Good luck with the new build and let me know how it goes.

If you don't mind me asking, how in the hell do you get your screen recordings of VR to look so damn smooth! I am running on a 4070TI so I know I can get mine to look like that as well! Are you using Oculus Mirror and then using OBS to capture the mirror?

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 6 měsíci

      Hi, thank you for the congrats, to be honest, it's still sinking in. When I started last year, I had no idea that I would get this far, or how much fun I would have doing so. I think the first video I did took about 3 months to finish, the next one a month, and so on, gradually getting quicker.
      For the screen recordings, it depends which ones you are talking about. Some of them are indeed OBS, with me using the replay feature in iRacing to display the image on the monitor and I capture it there. For the recordings you see that show the Performance headroom tool (the ugly thing in the middle of the screen with the wiggly line), I use the record function inside the headset.
      Basically, once I am set up and ready to race, I do a double tap on my headset, to exit the PCVR space (temporarily) and this takes me back to the Quest area, where I can see a splash screen telling me the Oculus Link is active.
      On this splash screen, at the bottom, are some icons, and one (second one in maybe?) will start the headset in video record mode. I don't check the option to record the mic, as this puts the audio out of sync, but the game audio will still be captured. Just not my mutterings, which is probably for the best.
      The headset is set to record in widescreen, with motion compensation set to minimal, the frame rate and data rate at the highest settings.
      When I have finished recording, I use the USB Detected option in the notifications of the quest headset to get my PC to recognise the Quest 3 as a USB device that can transfer files. I then transfer the video to my PC.
      From there, I use Premiere Pro to edit the video (mostly chopping top and tail), and then render that to a new file on my PC. The split screen videos are all created in Premiere Pro, but the final timeline is completes using Camtasia.
      I hope this helps.

      Thank you for the feedback.
      I can understand why you are hesitant, it is an on going investment, and also, if you start to do well, you will need to start buying tracks, all of which goes away if you don't keep paying your subscription.
      The way I look at it is; I have played loads of online games where I needed to pay a subscription to play, and if I stopped paying, then I couldn't access the content or the game. But, as with most online games, if I decided to come back, then the content, and my characters (cars and tracks in iRacing's case) were still waiting for me.
      So, the subscription side of it doesn't matter to me. What I am really after is the ability to race, anytime I like, and find a decent number of players on the tracks where I want to race, using the car I want to race with. And for the most part, iRacing delivers. I have found that the further up you go, in licence class, the less populated the races become, but I have only reached C class, so I don't know what it's like at the top.
      Racing the rookies can be an exercise in frustration, but as you get better, you will start to move up the Splits and face better, cleaner racers. But it takes time and effort to get there.
      I would say, if you do go for it, get one of the special offer memberships and go for something like 6 months or a year (you save a lot like that), and then dip in and out, don't race if it's getting on your nerves, and don't race on tracks where you are not able to get the best from the car, as this also leads to frustration, and don't expect to do very well, very soon.
      If you have the gear, the wheel and the pedals, and maybe a rig, then iRacing is probably one of the better sim racing experiences out there for online races.
      I'll stop now, because I am starting to sound like an advert... Talk to me again when I have been wiped out on T1 in a rookie race :)

    What about cropping the vertical FoV? i drive mostly cars with roof and have the tangent multiplier on 0.4 because why should i waste CPU and GPU power on rendering the car roof and the driver legs and feets. its more like wearing a helmet. only time i watch the roof or legs is before the start. And it saves massive Power. Power that you can use with SSR (7800X3D. RTX4070 here)

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 6 měsíci

      Yep, I mention that in the Conclusion, that you can get more performance either using the FOV tangent multiplier in ODT or the Foveated rendering option in OpenXR toolkit.
      For me personally, I get on better with the OpenXR toolkit option, as the FOV setting can cause some me some VR sickness when the black bar intersects about the image. But this is a personal thing, and I know lots of people love the helmet look that you recommend. It sounds like a cool option, it just doesn't work for me.
      With the OpenXR toolkit, setting the Foveated rendering as I showed in the video, I can get SSR to play nicely with my system, but the performance headroom still isn't great, and I am not sure what it will look like on a crowded grid. I am guessing, not pretty.

      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 6 měsíci

      I did have a look at FXAA, but I found that it caused a performance drop on my system for very little visual gain. In fact it seemed to make things less sharp.
      Anisotropic filtering, in the NVidia control panel I have set to Application controlled, as this is what has been recommended by those more knowledgeable than me on the iRacing VR forums.

      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yes, that's been my experience. I was racing the other day, admiring how smooth it all was, then noticed the FPS was 72 and realised I had forgotten to reset it back to 90Hz after my testing. So, yeah, a blind test is an important one, and I agree, it often reveals little difference between the refresh rates.

      Would be interesting to see you do some SSR testing at 72Hz instead to see what the performance looks like. I imagine it should be a considerable difference.@@OlderGamersPerspective

    4080 super is a beast so is the 13700k.

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 5 měsíci

      Little confused. Which bit am I wrong about? Are you getting the fps you want or are you seeing drops at 90hz?
      I haven't really noticed any gain in visual quality when going about 500 in the ODT, but it did cause a lot of audio breaks, which I found off putting. To be honest, I have not seen a big difference between 500 and 300.
      Just out of interest... VR or triples? Which do you think are the better racing experience?

Sooooo, don't quote me on this, but it has been rumoured that iRacing are aware of some performance, issues and are working on a fix. In the meantime, do you have the option to lower your refresh rate to 72hz?

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 6 měsíci

      When you say you can only join test drive, do you mean the test session when the servers are down or the Test Lap? Also, can you start an Ai session and race that?
      I have seen that the new Ai has some problems. Sometimes it becomes unclickable, and I have to shut it down and start it again to get into the menu system. I also had to uninstall mine and reinstall it as the update kept failing.
      let me know the answer to my first two questions, and then we can see if there is anything that can be done for you, but you might find a lot of problems go away when the system moves onto Season 2 tomorrow, and probably also gets a patch before the season goes live.

      The 5% loading issue can happen when the iRacing Anticheat software does not install properly after an update. All you need to do is stop the iRacing service and manually reinstall the Anticheat software from the iRacing folder.

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 5 měsíci

      Excellent tip, thank you for posting. The VR Sim racing community rocks :) Just to note that when you stop the iRacing service, it needs to be restarted again. If you can't figure out how to do that, you can simply reboot the computer and that normally will do it for you.

      Are you using a Quest 2 or 3? This is for Quest 3, although I seem to remember it was for the 2 as well.
      Sometimes, I have found, the Oculus app doesn't update particularly well, and in those case I have found a complete uninstall of the app, then a fresh download of the recent app, and a fresh install is the only solution.
      You could try that, but I can't guarantee it will work.

      Yes it is. You open the Oculus Debug tool and there is a setting at the bottom that needs to be set to Performance (its a drop down menu choice). There are a lot of factors in play here, including how you would connect to your PC, Link cable (in which case the cable and the USB port are important), or airlink or Virtual Desktop (in which case the speed of your router is important).
      In the benchmarks tests that I have seen online, your CPU is about 27% slower than mine, and your graphics card is about 50% slower than mine.
      So I can't say for sure, but it does look as though you would have a bit of a struggle to get the Quest 3 to run with most sim software, at fairly decent settings.
      I hope this helps.

    • @88Renix

      Looking at the hierarchy charts a 3090ti (which I am currently running) performance wise slots between a 4070 super and a 4070 ti at higher resolutions.
      A vanilla 3080 will be a fair bit below that.
      At this point in the game if you spend your money buying a 3080 you are starting out pretty deep in the hole performance wise as compared to the current 40 series.
      Not to mention the 5080 and 5090 will be launching in the not so distant future.
      It is even possible that the 4090 right before the 50 series launch may be able to be had at a decent price depending on how many are in the pipeline they need to get rid of at that time.
      I got my 3090ti which had released at $2000 a few months earlier brand new for $1100 in that type of scenario and have never regretted that purchase at all.
      I am planning on upgrading to either a 5080 or 5090 depending on performance specs and pricing when they launch.

  • @Kultivater

    The only reason you don't notice much of a performance hit is because of your headset. Oculus headsets have low resolutions. Try running my headset with those settings(the HP Reverb G2). You'll be dropping to about 40 or less fps with that setup, and thats if you're using FSR in the vrperfkit.
