      That is the best way, although it is time intensive, but if you go through everything, one bit at a time, it can give you a much better performance rating from your PC, and the sim of your choice.

      if you are using OpenXR, you need the openxr tool kit and you can access the performance meter from inside the menu system.
      If you are not using Open XR, you need to open the Oculus debug tool, which is in the oculus instal folder, run that, and at the bottom, turn on the setting to display the HUD Performance option. This will overlay inside your headset.

      I have tried these settings at 120, and yes, it does work, but the USB-C socket on my mainboard. that I have connected to my Quest via a 4 meter cable, will only deliver enough power to slow the discharge of the Q3 battery during racing at 90Hz, which is okay, because it still gives me at least 4 hours of racing.
      However, at 120Hz, I see a larger discharge rate. Not tested how long the Q3 can last at 120Hz, possibly something I should test, but from my brief observations, it's going to be much less than when I am at 90Hz.

Got my ram from 3200MHz up to 3800MHz and my i9 9900KF stable at 5GHz, i did everything i can to beef up my rtx2080super but after changing every thermal pad and paste it wasn't enough. Hi,
      yes, the optimisation of a PC can really be an addictive hobby. I was doing this ALL the time, up until a few years ago, and kind stopped as the programs I was using were not stressing my system.
      And then I stepped into the land of sim racing with VR and .... well, I am now where I am :)
      The 50 series does look interesting, but I shudder to think how much they will cost. Every year it's like an extra 200 for another 10 fps.
      Anyway, best of luck with the 3080ti, that's an awesome card, just make sure you have enough airflow inside your case.

    Nice roundup, thanks! Just bought a 4070 super yesterday (comming from a 1070) and using a quest2. My problem now is the "R" in the iRacing monitor, rendering, but if I understand it correctly that is my CPU throtteling. Can't really decide if I want to go full out VR or not. My three issues with VR is that I have a hard time getting a nice and clear focus on more then just the center of the view, the smallish FoV in the Quest 2 and finally that it's more of a hazzle starting things up if I only want to run a few laps. Plus I get so much in my own bubble that it gets a bit weird since I have kids.. I prefer to have some sort of perception of what's happening around me if I'm not alone in the house. But the immersion and how cool it is is great!

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 4 měsíci

      The R value is the time it takes for iRacing to render a full frame, according to the write up, a full bar is one second. you can find the full documentation here:
      support.iracing.com/support/solutions/articles/31000133494-meter-box-f-key-in-game-
      Having said that, I have seen that activating some settings can cause this R value to display some weird results. My answer was to drop everything to zero, then bring things in one at a time, taking that one value all the way up to max, to see the effect it had.
      Then I put it back to zero again and tried a different setting. Be aware though, some settings need you to reboot iRacing to take effect, even though they are not in orange or with any indication that you need to do this. Some don't, like pretty much all the settings on the far left.
      The Quest 2 does have a small FOV that is in focus, I noticed this straight away when I moved to the Quest 3, which can make sim racing harder. I can understand that in your circumstances VR may not be the perfect choice, and I am the wrong one to ask about that as I have only ever raced in VR, although I hope to install a 4k TV to my rig and some point in the coming weeks.
      If you didn't know, I have a discord channel up and running (new this week), lots of knowledgeable minds there if you want to jump over and ask a few questions. discord.gg/vnVxQj3Wqb

    I have a question though: have you tried your settings in two iRacing scenarios I have found to be really hard on performance in VR:
    1. rain - obviously a lot of particles and reflections
    2. dirt road races on stadiums: a lot of particles and smoke/dust, plus quick sliding turns on a stadium mean that a complex background (grandstands) is moving very quickly relative to the line of view. I found this very taxing on my current VR system

      1 - I would say that mostly, the performance sucks in the rain, dropping down to 72Hz will help, using openxr toolkit will help a bit more, but don't expect the same performance in the wet as you get in the dry.
      2 - I have very limited experience in dirt road races, but from what I have tried, it seemed to be fine. Better at any rate than when in the rain.
      if you want a longer conversation about this, can I suggest the older gamers discord channel? Lots of sim racers there, so you are bound to find someone who has an answer to a specific question.

      A side note: I should have watched more of your videos before I set up my Quest 3; though I figured out everything (Link app, void app, hands, controllers, mouse) by myself, the process would have been easier. I will definitely watch your rain optimization video, announced in the "connecting" video, before I dare to try rain in my VR headset.
      I thought I could tell you a few things I found out while setting up my Quest 3. Maybe you know them, but if not, you might find them worth including in your future videos.
      1. my motherboard has a USB-C port but it provides only minimal power, so I would be limited to Quest's battery life if I used a regular cable. I considered a powered USB hub, but then I found a neater solution: a USB-A (computer side) to USB-C (headset side) cable that also has an additional USB-C socket. That socket accepts the USB-C power cable from the Quest's power supply, allowing the headset to be powered/charged from that power supply also when playing. On top of that, the cable is much cheaper than the original quest cable, and tests give me 2.4 - 2.5 Gbps. I actually run my headset at 750 Mbps (set in Oculus diagnostic tool). The cable I am using is the one that GamerMuscle recommended, and I can also give you the Amazon link if you are interested.
      2. a small thing I found extremely useful if I put my headset on when not in the rig, or when looking to the side at a critical moment: when in the void, pressing the Meta button on the right controller centers the void interface.
      3. having the controllers handy is important also in the Quest app. Yes it detect hands gestures, but if I am in my rig, it often displays messages, specifically one that suggests reconnecting to the void, inside my steering wheel, where my finger obviously cannot reach. Shooting the button with the controller solves the problem!

Most of my videos are this sort of 'journey-man' experience, where I just document the sort of stuff that I had to go through in order for things to work as expected, in the hope that my experiences will help out others in a similar situation.
      The link cable I use, is I think no longer available in the same specs. The company did bring out a longer version, but that got poor reviews, so I think the rule of thumb here would be to only buy a cable from a company that offers a good returns policy as you will have to try it on your system to figure out if it offers any actual benefit.

    I think you are testing on the wrong tracks. I always thought Charlotte was very taxing on GPU, but turns out, Long Beach is even worse.
    With similar settings to yours (at Long Beach) and SSA High always on I get 70-75 FPS even on dry :D But if I turn SSA off I get 90 easy with around 40% headroom. I use Pico 4 now instead of HP Reverb G2 ;)

      For me, most versions of Charlotte are okay and never give me any issues, but I guess it will also be down to how many cars are on the track at any one time.
      Not sure I've ever raced at Long Beach, but I will put it on my list of tracks to test. For me the two that always gave me issues with the 3070, were Okayama, and Virginia International. But now, on the 4070Super, with these settings, they look stunning, and are largely free from performance issues (internet connection issues aside).

    I was following your other guides and since I like to have it look and with as much as possible effects etc I was testing AC and I noticed that thing where it drops to 45FPS which was really bad... SO what I actually did is 120 at 1.7 in AC then adjusted gradually setting till I was at around no headroom. Why? Well it was running at 120 and regularly dropping to circa 100 here and there on track which I have notices only with performance HUD and didn't felt it at all with my eyes. MOST IMPORTANTLY when it was dropping to the point where that settings Asynchronous thing was kicking in no matter if disabled or not it was dropping to 60FPS and not 45 FPS!!! which was also not noticeable tbh and I didn't have that motion problem at all, where when it was dropping to 45 from 90 it was instand eye torture and my stomach would go WTF is this LOL soooo moral of the story is to max out game at 120 and have it at least 50% of the time at this and when and if it drops it will not affect you experience like 45 would since72,80 and 90 all drops to 45 unfortunately and 120 drops to 60FPS which is great really. Also means that this way we could get actually 60 FPS with maxing setting out so that it can not render at 120 and is automatically dropped to 60FPS hihih :D

      Interesting, I will have to try this.
      I don't race on a regular basis at 120hz as my computer can only supply a trickle charge down the connection cable, meaning that it slows the discharge down enough to get several hours of sim racing at 90Hz, but at 120Hz, that time is much reduced.
      I could get an additional PSU for the cable, but at the moment, most things work fine (iRacing problems aside), so I am going to stick with what I have for the timebeing.
      But thank you for sharing your findings. I will look deeper into this.

    Could you do another benchmark with and without OC? I'm wondering if the boost came from all various changes you made or if most of it was from the OC alone as 10% is quite a lot for just that.

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I believe it was a combination of the two, some tweaks, some boosting. The OC probably gave me something like 7%, and the rest was from performance boosts, but.... I think also it's a greater understanding of what each of the settings in iRacing actually do. Once you know what will tank your performance and what will not, and that you have to close down and run the app again to see any change, you can start to make an informed choice.
      So it's a combination of performance boosts and knowledge.
      Also, the new driver from Nvidia and the clean install I think really made a difference.
      Once I get the 120Hz testing underway, I will look at this again and run the tests again, with and without OC.

    Hello, my iRacing in VR was running perfectly thanks to you and this video, I was able to play at 120hz on the quest3 with openxr toolkit with turbo mode on, but as you know the meta update messed up everything, openxr toolkit stopped working, I had to disable it and went back to 90hz, but I’m getting fps drops to 60hz pretty much in every race; have you found any solution to at least keep it stable at 90hz? It’s hard to race like this and it could be months until meta fixed this issue

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před měsícem +1

      Hi, yes, I feel your pain. Season 3 of iRacing appears to have add a lot of issues to performance, and sadly iRacing don't seem to be too motivated in fixing it, or even acknowledging that broke anything.
      The Older gamer discord channel is full of such woe ( discord.gg/DHeRxWEY )
      The open XR bug introduced by Meta should be fixed soon, they have at least acknowledged there is an issue, and are saying they will fix it soon. BUT, be aware the person who developed the OpenXR tool kit doesn't want to take the project forward, and it has become abandon ware, which will mean, unless someone takes it on, or comes up with something new, then at some point, OpenXR Toolkit will not work with future apps or OS's.
      The solution to trying to keep things stable, with the performance problems in iRacing, is first to see if there is a problem. It varies from track to track. I have had great performance at Oschersleben with 40 cars, and very bad performance at Navarra with just 12 cars, so it really is down to how well, or badly a track is optimised.
      iRacing is very inconsistent with it's track optimisations. Some are cool, others are just plain awful, and again, there seems little enthusiasm from the iRacing devs to address these issues.
      So at 90Hz, test the track in a practice session, and then a race (risky I know) and if you see performance issues for that track, drop your headset to 72Hz and try again.
      From the stuff I have read in most places, adjusting in sim settings doesn't do make much difference, but you can try this, perhaps dropping Particles down to low or even off.
      Hope this helps.

      I have been back and forth with this, and used it in ODT and then turned it off.

    Another question, in your honest view.. did you notice (graphic wise inside the headset) difference between 72hz and 90hz? I can’t seem to see a jump

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I set the quest link software to 72Hz the other day to do some benchmark testing, and forgot I had done this, then later in the week I was racing along, without a care in the world, and when I looked at the fps counter, I realised it was displaying 72fps, and of course at that point I remembered that I had failed to change the PC app back to the 90Hz setting.
      So, for me, I can't see a difference. When I was at 72hz, I thought I was at 90, because that's usually what I race at, but I wasn't. Night before last I came second in a formula Vee race while at 72Hz, so I don't think it influences my driving in anyway, but I am old, so if you are younger, it might be that you will benefit from a higher refresh rate.
      That being said, I do tend to gravitate towards 90Hz, and therefore 90fps, mostly because I can, but if I am in a situation where I need more performance, crowded grid for example, I will flick back to 72fps.
      I never really bother with 80hz, but your milage may vary.
      Hope this helps.

    have you tuned up to 120hz? how does the gpu perform?

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I have dabbled with 120hz, but at the moment iRacing seems to be suffering some performance issues since season 3, in particular with VR, so I have been sticking with 90. But from what I remember, the recharge rate was a lot worse at 120Hz, through the USB cable, but the display was smoother for not too much of a hit on the GPU. Some hit, of course, but not radical.
      But those tests were made before Season 3 hit.

      @@OlderGamersPerspective Do you still find your setup performs adequately @ 90hz after the season 3 update?

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  Před měsícem

      @@stevej2344 Short answer; No! Long answer, it depends on the track, the amount of drivers, the types of cars and the weather. But mostly I have found the performance of iRacing has dropped dramatically after the season 3 update, and worse still, no one at iRacing seems to either be doing anything to solve the issue, or even acknowledge there is a problem.
      New tracks like Navarra often offer very poor performance, with track details popping in and dropping FPS even if it's just a rookie race with 12 cars. It is all very disappointing.
      I've managed to get some performance back using OpenXR, but on the horizon is an update to the Meta PC link app which could break the usage of OpenXR, and if that happens, I will probably have to revert to 72Hz.
      If that doesn't work, me and iRacing may have to part ways.
      Sorry for the rant, I hope this answers your question.

      Just so you are aware, 6 days ago, the meta app updated and now the maximum most people can set 90Hz to is 1.5x. At 72hz it's now 1.3x and at 120Hz it's 1.7x.
      This various from user to user, so possibly not everyone has seen the update yet. Or possibly their system reacts differently. This change is too new to be able to tell for sure either way just yet.
