You probably rush the rookie, just by saying you wanted 8 units done by 12, you can’t rush a rookie because mistakes will be made
i can blame u Mikey for this one. cant rush a rookie. actually cant rush anyone. personally i hate when anyone rushes me! A MISTAKE WILL BE MADE.
Idk. I see where mikey is coming from but i couldnt work for him😂
8 units in 4 hours is stupid tho. Gotta find tstats etc.....unless they were there together. Couldnt remember if that was in video
8 units in one location possibly I guess. I don't know the scenario
8 units in 4 hours? The poor kid was probably feeling rushed. That would probably be a most of the day job where I work. Curious why he had the wires off the capacitor. Was he trying to test the microfarads with his meter? That sucks that it killed the compressor. Usually those things can cycle the thermal overload plenty of times before they die.
@@nzrmex26 small businesses owners in this field, all got their start from small business employers who pushed their employees because of business expenses. And what happens is that good employees leave and start their own companies and work twice as hard so they can steal a few dollars for themselves. I have been on both sides of the business and we put in to many hrs to enjoy a full and enjoyable life. Service Calls will never end. I had the leave the field in order to enjoy working on calls again. I spend more time on jobs then I should, but it results in less call backs. I still have my business and customers while working as an STW. I work at my own pace. And now much more happier with family and work. Try it yourself. Eric
Why would you send 1 tech to work on 8 systems? I think you need to take some accountability Pal 😂.
As much as it sucks you had to replace the condenser, the customer will appreciate the honesty that it was the companies fault and you made it right on your part.
mike i agree pretty silly mistake, but when i was a tech 8 systems was an ALL DAY call to properly check caps contactors system pressures remove fan covers and wash the coils. We were also required to check filters and fan motor caps, at my company and get a temperature drop measurement for each system as well. Another tech and myself were given all day to check a 16 system house once. but our shop billed an hour per unit so that's what they wanted us to take.
Unfortunately, I have been in Anderson's shoes as well as a new tech. My mess was that I pressurized the system as a new tech while looking for a leak(which I found). What I failed to do was to let out the nitrogen before I turned on the power to the condenser. The sounds the came out of that compressor were hellish indeed. It was a shameful experience, but one I definitely learned from.
You live and you learn.
But damn! 8 System AC maintenance and you want it done by 12?! That’s crazy.
It wasn’t a hard core. Just a light systems check.
My question is why wasn't normal operation confirmed on arrival and how can you confirm operation by only checking the condenser just a question??
Meanwhile I'm driving for 3-5 hours of my day. Lol
@@MikeyPipesUncensoreddon't rush rookies if I was him I would've left you and gave you crap
You NEVER send a rookie to a cash cow customer for a major preventive service call.
Mikey Pipes....i made a major mistake 3 months after i started working for my current boss 7 years ago. It cost him $20k. He was mad. I promised i would never make a mistake like that again and be as thorough as possible. 7 years later, hes given me over $30 in raises, and im the best tech at the company with very few callbacks per year. He claims im one of the best in our area, Northshore MA. My mistake made me a much better tech. And now my boss treats me like his own son.
Should be Zero calls backs. Follow the process and do your checklist
@@georgesummerlin1602 Thats unrealistic
Impossible for no call backs always intermittent problems throughout the year
That is impossible no call back as hvac technician you lower your mistakes
@@georgesummerlin1602that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard literally impossible
I was watching the Father’s Day video that you did and you mentioned that the three wires weren’t connected on one of the call.I was thinking that your company did the servicing and probably one of the ac guy did it accidentally. Lo and behold here’s the proof that he did it and admire you for giving him another chance on his costly mistake. Because the next one there will be no more another chance. I salute you for your honesty because a lot of ac tech or companies will not admit if they have done some damage on the ac that they’re fixing.
The problem is the compressor was probably already defective prior to him getting there and servicing it, but unfortunately, because he wasn’t thorough and diagnosing and servicing, PM in the unit it wasn’t noted so therefore, if there’s a problem, it went unnoticed. It was probably an issue to begin with, highly doubt because the wires were disconnected that caused the compressor to burn out 220 V system
The thermal overload was defective.
Mikey keepin it real! I am so impressed that you always step up to the plate and make things right with your customers. (And I enjoy your uncensored rants as well.)
I appreciate that!
8 PM's in
Thanks for the video Mikey! I'm getting an education from every video! Keep up the great work with the videos Brother!!!
Thanks for the video. Outstanding!
Suggestions….
1. Have your technicians place a Mikey pipes sticker over the seam on the any access panel after each visit. If the sticker is ripped when you are called back then you know someone else was there.
2. Have your technicians take a short video after the work is completed and before any service covers are put back. If possible….upload the video with your service notes to your billing software.
3. Create a clone of yourself and hire him.
4) check operations AFTER doing your PM (as well as before to know if you caused an issue or was there an issue to begin with)
being the stand up guy you seem to be, you're probably going to eat this cost, but as my dad used to say "unless the kid burns his hand on the stove, he'll never learn not to touch"
And that’s why he took the door today voluntarily
@@MikeyPipesUncensored That uncomfortable smile from both of ya'll at 14:45 is when I knew it was a wrap.. When Mikey saw that smirk.. he probably punched a wall shortly after.. You can't afford to have that level of incompetence so early on..
@@MikeyPipesUncensoreddamn he quit??
I thought you said definition of a Saturday is repeating yourself over and over. LOL, made sense.
Another great video, there does not seem to be any good techs out there anymore that are proud of their work, sorry it cost you but at least you did right by your customer so you will not loose the customer.
How da phuk you expect 8 tune-ups before noon?
You're not treating your customer or your employee fairly.
You got what you deserved on this call.
Mistakes are the best teachers on how not to do things.. as long as he learns from it and grows as a technician... As far as you as a employer and business owner, I find no faults in you bro. I wish more boss's were like you. If you ever open a company in South Florida, I'm signing up...
Great point! And then I gave him the option. Is this mistake ever gonna happen again and should I keep you or should you leave and I’ll let you decide what you think he did as a decision follow up in tomorrow’s video
Anderson probably feels like shit about his mistake, call it a learning experience and keep moving forward.
This is why you have to have a sign off supervisor. Two-step process, especially with new hires. Someone to swing by before power is turned on and verify all is well and sign off. I liked it when I was training in the field cause I learned so much from the old cats.
So you sent a rookie tech to do an 8 system maintenance, told him to be done by 12.. idk what time he started..assuming 8-9 so 3-4 hrs to get the job done. He made a mistake while feeling rushed and under pressure… BIG SURPRISE there… and now he’s to blame? That system was 7 years old still under warranty if registered and idk your business practices if you handle that on your end or leave it up to the customer.. but if it was your talking an hours worth of labor cost to replace that compressor if you took accountability and responsibility to go back and do it yourself rather than making a video bitching about one of YOUR employees on CZcams. This is the type of guy that no one should want to work for. Educate your crew and help him grow past this rather than blasting the guy on social media like he’s a chump. You should have fired him or helped him learn from this. And realistically.. like no bullshit, if you’re running a successful business $1000 plus tax is nothing to bitch about. Fix it and move on.
Always finish the maintenance on each system with the system running last thing is to unhook the gages and that way you know everything is hooked up and running.
Shit happens but on the bright side the customer is happy and you’re making it wright . You have integrity and stand by work the good bad and the ugly .
Absolutely
An extra step could be added to your procedure (protocol) - to engage/push contactor manually (of course with an insulated screwdriver) to make sure both compressor and fan are starting. I am learning so much from you every day.
Leaving an observing family w/o AC in Primary (formerly Master) BR on shabbat was no good. The Taj Mahal needs a redundant system, perhaps.
My complements Mike, you handled that perfectly. I’m sorry it cost you a s-load for a new condenser and labor, however you can hold your head high and proud as the business owner. Anderson seems like a good man. He’s fortunate to have a boss willing to allow one expensive mistake. But I wouldn’t count on that happening two times. 😅
😂 I’m absolutely loving the uncensored!! Fuck yeah!!
Thanks for the feedback. Make sure you share with others and if you haven’t done already subscribe.
Because of that, we now make our guys record operation before and after service and maintenance
Start 1 system and finish 1 system and watch it run / turn back on before you move on to the next
It would take hours to match the systems and thermostats. I haven't noticed obvious like stickers / sharpie notes on each unit. Hope they are there. If not, Whoever installed /maintained prior as guilty as the next new guy
@@cincydreamhomes I agree, unless there’s good pictures or notes it can take a long time just to make sure you’re working on the right one. But my first step would be to shut all the thermostats off then turn on one by one lol cause I’ve been there
Props for standing behind your work and making it right for the customer. Another take away is that you should make sure the system works before you start the PM. It is never fool proof as the next start for a system can be the undoing of any compressor. AC never seems to fail except on the hottest day....
Let's hope that the new guy learns from his mistake and becomes your next star employee.
Bro we had installer install a 15 ton tru unit building 480v and it was 208/230 3 phase that was costly mistake. Bigger the job bigger the f up keep rolling bro I have learn to take one task at a time
Glad you’re not too hard on him, guarantee it’s one he won’t fuck up again
went to a popular dollar type store a few weeks ago. leaking water behind the coolers on the floor. coolers working, drain pans doing their jobs. humidity 95% in store. warehouse 95 degrees and glanced over at walk in freezer and it was at 2Degrees. Manager told me warehouse and freezer had been like that for over a year. on the roof, there is a YORK 4 stage. Only 2 compressors working. used my pen to move some wires to take a picture of the board and the whole system kicked in. A 24 volt Y wire not secure. Tightened it up, all 4 compressors kicked on. Humidity went away, warehouse dropped to 74, no more condensation and freezer dropped to -8 all in an hour or so. easiest 1500 I have ever made. In 30 minutes solved 4 problems. Hack make us stacks
Facts! Great job!
50 years in this business and I feel for you. I commend you for showing mistakes on youtube. No sugar coating it. Would love to meet up with you someday in FL to shake your hand.
Deal!
Did you try to disconnect the compressor and see if it still tripped the breaker? You checked the windings and we’re good and no shorts to ground
But 8 systems by 12 o'clock though?
ahh, watched the other videos first, then came here to see the black mark on capacitor bracket, from the compressor start wire. so what happened is power going in the "run" and back out the "start" to grounded case. with contactor pulled in, that makes 120V continuous power through the compressor windings in series to ground and the thermal overload cannot stop that, since it opens the "common" terminal, which hooks to the where both windings are directly connected together.
from the time power got turned on with contactor pulled in it was cooking itself. it likely started in short bursts with very high current draw and hard running until opening the overload. but again, it would just keep cooking itself with the 120v to ground through both windings in series, so it may or may not have cycled the overload very many times, as the 120v through would keep the whole thing "hot and cooking"
Thanks for the detailed analysis
Everything funny until someone loses a eye
Exactly
The wires from the cap were probably touching ground. I've shorted out blower motors by not plugging the cap back in. The start wires were touching ground and that motor never turned back on after that.
I knew this was coming when i saw the wires not on the Cap that Hell was coming
8 systems in 4 hours and you wonder why he's rushing lol
I have been in residential hvac for 5 years as a service tech and started working for a new company they have been very happy with me but mistakes happen i didnt connect the blower motors capacitor after testing it.. 10 minutes later that motor lost its smoke and i then had to replace the motor. Boss man was understanding yet i did tell him pull it out of my pay( im hard on myself and dont like making mistakes) boss man didnt pull it out of my pay. Not as expensive of a mistake but hey ahit happens.
It is what it is man, shit happens.
Even experienced guys make mistakes… you and I both do and you know that. It’s life.
Chill.. he learned from it. That’s a win
Don’t teach them to rush, work at a pace that they are able to focus and get things done efficiently and effectively and it will save you on call backs and fixing broken shit.
It will cost you a little more on labor but it’s an insignificant compared to throwing out hundreds or thousands of dollars for an unnecessary repair at your liability and expense.
I know because I’ve done the same thing.. I’ve pushed my guys to work too hard or too quickly and I had to learn from that the same way he just learned from his mistake.
Who are you angrier at? Your employee or the lady with her hazards on?
The insane lunatic with the hazards
lmao!
Had guys put 410 in a 22 system yesterday.....oh my aching head
We had a similar thing happen at my parent’s house. The tech replaced a capacitor on the downstairs unit, a day later no compressor. It was determined to be dead by the company because of the work they did, but they wouldn’t pay for a new condenser and only refunded the service visit. We switched companies after that, I won’t hire people that don’t stand behind their work. Sounds like you do!
Huge props for taking responsibility for this. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Compressor was probably already going out. That’s a pretty fast turn around to kill a compressor.
800 Amp Service for Smelting Ore in the garage out back.
400 Amps just for the vibrator in the master bedroom!
I had a brand new carrier ac wire was loose on capacitor from factory was tripping breaker instantly luckily I caught it a was able to repair common wire
You should always see the system running before you leave. COME ON ANDERSON!! On the master system no less lol
Based on the Dr.'s responses, Anderson was to check capacitors and clean outside units. He, probably, wasn't supposed to go inside. The Dr. already changed filters inside. So how Anderson was supposed to call for cool on thermostat.
That is a good question
Wow Mike good for you to swallow that! I've only fucked up that bad once. Well not including damaging customers property accidentally and not owning up to it. Those are my biggest fuck up's as a technician. I'm still no super tech I still get lost on diagnosis. And I still get nervous on major repairs. Anyway love the videos Mike! 👍🏻
WOW!!! just WOW!!!! I have no words
How come the compressor not shut off via thermal switch? Was it defective
Absolutely was defective
@@MikeyPipesUncensored Compressor overloads should have tripped out. Circuit breaker should be changed. It appears it did not trip normally causing an extended amount of time before tripping.. Some forensics should be done to verify.
Expensive mistake, but the customer is happy. I have been out of the HVAC field for over 20 years. Your ohm readings seemed about right for a compressor. Was there some kind of mechanical failure of the compressor? I was thinking start winding failed, but the readings were good.
So I sent the homeowner an email following up with today’s service asking if the air conditioning is working properly and I get a reply a few minutes ago that it is freezing thank you very much and I replied with. It’s been my pleasure. Have a great night.
gotta double check your work. why i change my own oil.
I did in home sales for kitchens. One of 1st jobs it was 4 xs cost it was a super tall bank of cabinets in an old victorian, I only did it 2xs.. What an ouch that was from thousands of a comission to hundreds. lesson never forgotten
I remember one time this tow truck came in for a fuel leak at the carburetor it was the inlet on a 4 barrel were the fuel filter goes the piece threads into it . I told the service mtr that they needed a new carburetor he was like they have self tapping ones that will work I was like it's going to leak and I don't want to be responsible for burning this customers tow truck to the ground. He said o yes you are going to install this or your getting fired. So I did I tighten it up nice and dry no leaks. Went on vacation came back and the owner of the dealership pulled me into the office to inform me I had no job. So I asked him why he informed me the tow truck I worked on burned to the ground I told him service manager told me to do it the service manager denied it that prick so I found another job a real valuable life lesson I should of packed my tools and left he had it in for me.
This is how every guy working for Mike gets treated
I saw someone on youtube installing a 1200A service to a “single family home”. apparently that took some ‘splainin to the utility.
@MikeyPipesUncensored, Help me to understand what Anderson was doing. Was he removing the fans from the unit ? If he was just checking the capacitors and wiping down the units, why disconnect the cap ? , I thought you trained all of your techs to test them under load using the HVAC School app to help. It a much more reliable method and no wires are disconnected.
Praise in public; reprimand in private.......
It is what it is. I keep it publicly real.
I have seen compressors so hot that would damn near burn your hand and not burn out. Ya I'm sure it took some years off the life expectancy
Maybe he thought you said make sure you get a call
Imagine that.
Cycle unit before and after
So he forgot to hook up the capacitor after servicing the unit which killed the compressor?
Hey Mikey , We've all made mistakes ,But great job on letting the tech know in a kind of kidding way. You can't just blow it off, ,but I think you made your point ... You probably put the fear of god in him not to screw up again..
I think you did right giving him another chance. I think he will learn from it. He was rushing and I'm sure a bit nervous. Bright side is that you probably have that customer for life.
Are you able to write that off in taxes somehow? I’m clueless on that so just a question…..

And even though he may not be able to afford it. You need some skin in the game.
I guess it got so hot without the fan running that it blew out and popped the breaker.

If he was there to clean condensors, change filters, check pressures (or look for a sweating suction line), and check contactors; why did he take the wires off the capacitor?? He may be one of those guys that it's hard to gt them to say what you want to hear.

The biggest lesson in this is to test after test and dubble check his own work and know him self what he did because i don't think even with those wires unplugged it would have ruined a compressor as long as they didn't close the circuit im willing to bet that compressor went bad by chance and the customer messed with it after but because you have had so many bad techs and he doesn't have enough integrity to stop and say this is not they way I left it

Mikey fucking pipes!!!
👋
You jinxed the poor guy lol. Damn though, even when i was a rookie i never killed a perfectly good compressor. A cap or 2 or 3 probably lol.
Yeah, there really isn’t an excuse for this.
When I was doing an MVAC service at the shop I used to work at years ago we had one of those AC service machine carts, you know, all gauges and tanks and stuff in one unit. My boss was insufferable. Always yelling and rushing us. I hate that. It makes me stressed out to the point where I make mistakes. I recharged the system as intended with both valves opened for a full weight-based charge after vacuuming. Then, moving too fast because of this dickhead yelling at me to hurry up, I jumped into the car and started it without closing the valves. The compressor blasted a few hundred PSI into the low side and popped an O-ring in the charge cylinder. The boss watched as the low side gauge flew fully clockwise until it hit "retard" and he lost his mind. I lost mine too. I apologized but I told him I wouldn't work like this with him rushing us all the time. He actually surprised me and apologized as well, which was out of character. Still one of the more embarassing mistakes I've made over the years but "rush anxiety" causes this to happen to human beings. I would not have normally done that if I was taking my time and thinking logically through each step. My 2 cents is to think about what it would take you, the experienced master technician, to do a job and then double it for a new rookie so they don't feel panic and miss stupid stuff like this. If they prove themselves to be more capable, great! You learn that over time about your people. If this isn't something you're willing to do, put the guy on less arduous and high-risk jobs first or hire more experienced techs at the cost of higher hourly rates. Those are really the only 2 solutions I can see.
How many amps do you have going into your mini Taj Mahal?
I have 300.
so my 400 isn’t too bad then 😂
I foresee a new mikey pipes policy new hires must take photos of work and add to work order upon completion.
