      I want the alternate universe where we learn Samus's backstory through a decent movie instead of a horrible game, lmao. So strange Nintendo was so hesitant to pull the trigger when they had all this talent at their doorstep waiting for the greenlight, but are perfectly fine with Sakamoto running wild with Other M and trashing almost everything people liked about the story and Samus's character.

    • @Xfushion2
      @Xfushion2 Před 2 lety +18

      Because Samus was never supposed to be a _standarized_ character, part of the core of the series is that each player over the years has stablished an interpretation of Samus's personality due of how vague the games are with the setting, sure it may have started that way because NES limitations but now it's part of the series gameplay (isolation, heavy focus on environmental exploration/storytelling, etc.)
      And the fact that the majority of people didn't liked other M is proof that a Metroid movie would have never worked. They tried to standardize Samus and remove all things that made Metroid fun (the investigantion/speculation) and look how it turned up.
      It's like when people ask for a Zelda movie, realizing that also the moment Link opens his mouth is the moment the character is ruinned.

    • @Deadflower20xx
      @Deadflower20xx Před 2 lety +10

      @@Xfushion2 I dunno, I definitely think it's possible. There are so many sci-fi movies that work beautifully where the main character barely talks that much, Blade Runner comes to mind (at least the final cut). There's an entire beautifully done scene that's like 7 minutes long where he is just analyzing photo evidence with sci-fi tech while creepy music plays. By the end of the story there's still so much of the world and its story to speculate on, including the origins of the main character.
      It's a quiet, atmospheric, dark movie with small peaks of action and plot progression when needed, then at the end it leaves you wondering about a million things without seeming like it was sloppily put together. It was made as a huge world that respects the viewer enough to speculate about it. I think that's what a top tier Metroid movie would be like.

    Funny. If you read the metroid manga, you know she's basically OG Mandalorian as far as backstory goes. Look at his (Din Djarin) origins and then back at samus origins and you'll see the very obvious parallels. Many match up perfectly, like both adopting a "baby".

      I don't know much about the Mandalorian as I haven't watched it, but you're not wrong. Considering Metroid is a series inspired directly by the Aliens franchise, I feel like it'd make sense for Samus to have a keen interest in xeno-biology, a curiosity instilled in her from a young age when she was raised by her surrogate guardians, the Chozo. After all, she does seem to have some fond memories of the creatures of Zebes that helped her learn some crucial skills (one game-breaking, even X3), so maybe she's an animal lover? I know it might sound cliche or predictable to say, but considering the parallels, I could totally see Samus Aran being voiced by Sigourney Weaver...hell, in my head, that's her canon voice. X3

    • @mattwo7
      @mattwo7 Před 2 lety +16

      @@bluestreaker9242 The Mandolorian is a space western about a Mandolorian bounty hunter from a fringe cult of Mandolorians who don't live on Mandolore who is ordered to retrieve a baby from Yoda's species (who the internet incorrectly dubbed "Baby Yoda", though his actual name has since been revealed) from remnants of the Galactic Empire (well before the First Order became a thing). However, he grows attached to the baby (then simply known as "The Child" even though he's fifty years old, as his species ages far slower) and decides to rescue him and get him back to its own people.
      It's sort of like how Samus grows attached to the baby metroid in Metroid II/Samus Returns lol.
      It's a really good show from the creators of the hit cartoons Star Wars: The Clone Wars (not to be confused with Star Wars: Clone Wars by Genndy Tartakovsky of Samurai Jack fame) and Star Wars Rebels, I highly recommend it.

    The majority of the comments point out how difficult it is to make a main character who is mostly silent. There is one franchise that manages to do a lot with a little and that Mad Max. He's literally a side character in most of his movies. That might be one way to keep the "undevelopedness" of the character's backstory from showing thin. Same thing happened with the Man With No Name movies. Of course it's entirely possible I don't know what I'm talking about.

    • @NoeLPZC
      @NoeLPZC Před 2 lety +3

      I immediately thought of Mad Max too, but the difference is that Max has a host of other characters to carry the plot forward for him. When a large part of your movie is likely to be Samus by herself, writing a compelling "undeveloped" character is much trickier.
      I think borrowing from Aliens/Prime 2/Other M (or even Rambo (i.e. Rambo 4) now I think of it) where she's the expert/muscle among a platoon would do a lot to relieve some of that burden. Then for at least the last third of the movie, after she's been established, she's on her own (again, like Aliens, but drawn out to deliver true-to-game isolation). The tricky part, when comparing to Aliens and Rambo, is that they both had at least an entire movie to establish the protagonists as experts. We understand Ripley's fear of the xenomorph and her frustrations with the marines' underestimation because we've seen Alien. Without that she'd just come across as a paranoid worry-wart. So you'd have to devote 15-20 minutes upfront to establish Samus as an expert and the Metroids as a real threat, plus that half an hour at the end to deliver isolation, and you're not left with a ton of time in the middle to establish a compelling story. If it was pushed out to 2+hours in length it could be done though.

    • @mrgreatbigmoose
      @mrgreatbigmoose Před 2 lety +2

      @@NoeLPZC, excellent! Now that's what I'm talking about! Rambo is a good template, where most of the time you watch the bad guys and establish just how good the Hero actually is at what they do. I'd even venture to guess that the movie shouldn't start on Zebes, but during a bounty mission.
      And some character growth for Samus would be underestimating the Metroids. When the Greatest has a twinkle of fear in her eye you can make the goal of the movie to overcome that fear.

      I've seen a few arthouse-ish movies that are only mostly about one character, don't have much dialogue, and are done well. The only one that comes to me right now is eraserhead. The thing is, I assume nintendo would want to market this movie to as many people as possible, of all ages, and those types of movies definitely aren't for everyone. Also those movies tend to run on their atmosphere and the implications of what they do and the world they're in, and I tend to think that those movies are harder to make well rather than an average blockbuster.

    • @johnleonard9102
      @johnleonard9102 Před 2 lety +6

      @@tellurianapostle You've got a point in the shackling thing.
      Fusion starts with Samus being the weakest she's been in her entire career. Notice how Fusion is the only game where she places her left hand under her arm cannon while all the other have her left hand on top. On top is to control recoil; under is to help lift it. Gameplay also has you take massive damage from enemies, which is why you get like 20 energy tanks in that one. Also, it used to be a big point that Samus could ledge hang due to her suit being so light in Fusion, but SR and Dread kinda retconned that cuz seriously, the SR suit was huge.
      Samus knows that she's been stripped of her former power, and the Federation is what saved her. The Federation had to save her with the vaccine, the Federation had to replace her ship, and now she's part dangerous parasite. The Galactic Federation Civilization absolutely fears Metroids, so she couldn't go to the people for bounty work.
      With all these factors, she knew that the Federation were the only ones she could turn to, so she kind of begrudgingly submitted to do their work. In Fusion she even had to rely on the Federation to send weapons data for her.
      The events of Fusion made her powerful again, and she learned about the Federation Illuminati trying to clone Metroids, so that's when she grasped her independence again. One thing I would have changed is when Samus is locked in the comms room, they should have made a way for you to escape without needing to convince the Adam ai. This would have showed Samus has truly become independent again, ignoring Federation orders so she can do what she thinks is right. Once you get to the station control room, that's where Samus could have shown the Adam ai that she was doing the right thing.
      Come Dread, she's independent again, and she kept Adam along for companionship; I think Samus wants friends, but everything and everyone she knows keeps dying around her, and she probably blames herself for some of them. So the best companionship she can have is a computer cuz it can't really die lol.
      But at this point, she's not taking orders from anyone but herself. She's back to being a bounty hunter, and she understands that's some jobs can be accomplished only by her, like anything to do with the X since she's the only being that can't be infected.

    Than build a movie that emulates the attitude of the game. Focus on the exploration of the planet. Start with Samus landing, then go chronologically through that, like John Wick 1 and Drive, only more creepy. Focus on exploring the planet alone, then pepper it with flashbacks to reveal Samus' character as she faces more adversity as she inches deeper into the planet. Focus on a simple planet-wide premise, then use that as a springboard to expend Samus as a character. It's exactly what Adi Shankar said. The smaller scale, the better. Isolationist, survivalist, and alien.

    Honesty the backstory excuse sounds like that, an excuse. We've had plenty of movies where we don't have a novel worth of backstory to the character. Rambo was a homeless vet wandering around and only halfway to we find out oh He's half Native American from Arizona, was special forces, and a medal of honor winner. The only real past we get is his breakdown in the police station and Him retelling the shoe shine box story. Die Hard We know Mcclane is an NYPD officer who hates flying and his marriage is on the rocks hence why he made the trip to LA. Ellen Ripley was some senior Tech and deck officer working for Weyland-Yetani. We don't find out she has/had a daughter until the sequel.
    Samus is an orphaned human, altered by the Chicken people after Her colony was destroyed by Pirates, and she is now basically a Supersoldier even outside the suit. Nintendo established all that well before 2005 when Woo got the rights. She's a bounty hunter because pirates killed her family and the Federation ties itself up in red tape and regulations. She's basically in a revenge arc and has to learn to be better, not just to stop the Metroids but to not become a monster like Ripley. Both figuratively and literally given third act, to stop Samus from destroying Motherbrain who's been mindfucking him nearly the whole movie, He drinks the Chozo-Metroid juice and becomes a literal monster as he mutates.

      The problem with Other M story is that it's at the end of the timeline, but they treat the character as if she were the inexperienced newbie from the beginning of her story, probably to introduce the character to a new audience
      Samus at this point had killed Ridley countless times, defeated Dark Samus and wiped out the Metroids, she would be a colder veteran lone wolf soldier hardened by so many battles and losses, basically a female Solid Snake
      It doesn't help that Other M as a game is also flawed, with the story taking the lead and restricting the gameplay, making it extremely linear and removing most of what makes a good Metroidvania.

      It makes sense why Samus would suffer from PTSD, espcially towards Ridley. Snake didn't have his parent's skull's crushed to bits right in front of him when he was 3 while the murderer cackled wildly.
      And of course it would be towards Ridley in that game, she thought she had finally killed him for good after Super Metroid (the previous game timeline-wise), only for him to come back. How would you feel in that situation. Not only that, but Samus has constantly shown she isn't immune to emotional trauma, as shown by how she felt and reacted towards having to fight and kill her fellow bounty hunters in Corruption.
      I'm not gonna argue that Other M is a perfect game, far from it, but a lot of people seem to think it's a good, if not pretty good Metroid game.

      @@primrosevale1995 "She's not portrayed as a newbie, she's portrayed as both someone who's dealing with PTSD and someone who has caused the Galactic Federation a lot of trouble."
      Not really. There is no actual dealing with her PTSD in the game, just a few lines in some cutscenes. I would have loved to see a game where it actually plays an important part, where it is an obstacle to overcome and where we get an arc with a resolution.
      "Snake didn't have his parent's skull's crushed to bits right in front of him when he was 3 while the murderer cackled wildly."
      It is not outright stated (that I know of) that Solid Snake had PTSD, but it is implied he suffered it after Outer Heaven. Naked Snake suffered from PTSD after operation Snake Eater.
      "Samus has constantly shown she isn't immune to emotional trauma"
      I agree. But that isn't what we're being shown in Other M. In that game she is reduced from a complex character to a simple trope. Instead of her trauma being something the story builds on, it becomes formulaic and shallow.
      "but a lot of people seem to think it's a good, if not pretty good Metroid game."
      It's a decent enough game, but it's a crappy Metroid game.

    I really think a movie, or a short series even, could be made now. Just picture this: Samus receives a distress signal from a federation colony under attack by space pirates and Ridley, 2 survivors remain being chased by the pirate army, they catch up to them and in the nick of time Samus arrives on the scene, decimating the entire pirate force pursuing the civilian scientist and his daughter, saving them. But behind her a massive explosion rocks the colony and Ridley climbs the research facility standing atop it as if he's king of the Hellscape he created then narrows his eyes on samus and the civilians jumps down and starts fighting her, then he goes after the child and Samus tries to protect her but is ultimately pierced by his tail, losing most of her abilities due to the suits energy depleting from the hit. The scientist, injured from the pirate attack fires a pistol shot into Ridleys eyes just long enough so all 3 can escape to samus' ship and get first aid. Once at the ship the scientist explains to samus that the colony was researching ancient chozo artifacts on the planet they reside on but could not locate with their technology and what little understanding of the chozo they have. Samus obviously cannot let the pirate assault go unpunished and sets out on the journey to discover the artifacts and perhaps other secrets the federation did not want the public knowing.
    Ik this was long and super fan-fictiony but i really think Metroid has potential as a series and would love to see it get more attention. If anyone read that entire thing...you have lots of patience lol

    If I had the chance to write a Metroid movie, I'd set it before the events of Metroid/Metroid Zero Mission. It would detail Samus's final mission with the Galactic Federation Army.
    It would cover why she chose to leave in favor of going freelance, how she got her power suit, and her first encounter with a metroid creature. This one in particular would have rapid aging, meaning when we first see it; it's in its larva stage. But by the film's climax, it's become an Omega Metroid. The film would start with her being apart of the GFA team to establish the premise and plot, but eventually through a series of major events; the whole team would be separated. And most of the film would be Samus on her own.

    I always thought of thevspace pirates and zebes as having a dark tribal feel. Samus deep in a jungle going up against spiritual monsters. Ridley and Craid had their own temples and Mother Brain was a freaky A.I. which can totally go hand-in-hand with sci fi horror.
