  • When The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came out in 2017, it was a landmark achievement in video game history and created a new standard for open worlds and the action/adventure genre.
Put simply, Breath of the Wild is a game that's all about re-cultivating a decayed landscape and civilization, and saving a world that was once thought to be beyond saving.
Tears of the Kingdom still has those themes, but this time, it has more to say as well.
It's a story about sacrifice, the consequences of freedom, and misinterpretation.
It's about rebuilding the world, sure, but it's asking us to question what it is we are rebuilding? Why we want to return to the ordered world? Won't it simply collapse again?
Like, seriously, isn't Ganondorf just gonna return in some new form in a few years anyway?
Why should people- why should Link and Zelda, need to fight through the tears and forge on in spite of immense destruction?
This is what Tears of the Kingdom asks us, and the answers it provides, can only be described, as worthy of the legend.

A Zelda game that has the message of "Do not fear ruin" is bold and ambitious, but still hard to accept in these dicey times we live in.

TOTK is my second favorite Zelda game that I've played, but it wasn't because of the story it was only because of the freedom of gameplay and puzzle solving.

Yeah the puzzle solving and overall gameplay freedom is unparalleled

Yeah, I’m playing through it for the first time currently, I’ve almost beat the story and it’s probably tied with BotW.

@@PadawanBricks7212 Yeah BOTW and TOTK are pretty much the perfect Nintendo Switch "Double Feature" of games.

amazing video! just finished main story and finally watching the things i was avoiding due to spoilers, i feel like this video does a really good job of encapsulating the message the game is trying to send. made me realise a couple of things about the game i havent even thought about, criminally underrated!

You bet. Splatoon, Pikmin, Kirby, Zelda and I'm sure even more Nintendo games I'm not aware of are all implied to take place within a post apocalyptic earth/scenario, possibly even the same earth for Pikmin, Splatoon and Kirby(?)

@@UltraInstinctLinkIt's an interesting take on apocalypse settings. Trying to have some fun no matter what happens to the world.

I still feel a lot of the criticism I've seen online for TOTK is justified. Though this is a good analysis nonetheless.

Can't say I've heard anyone pronouce Sonia as "Son-eye-uh" until now and I actually love it. New headcanon confirmed.

@@anotherblowncartridge I hope that's not the case, I'm not finished watching just yet but I am really enjoying your perspective. This is also just my own perspective but hearing the words Sun and Eye enunciated the way you have actually works for what I think Nintendo wanted us to associate with Sonias character, referencing the Light and the Third Eye themes symbolized throughout the series. It may be a bit on the nose, but every name has to have its origins. So for me, it really works well. No offense was intended so I hope you didn't take my comment to be sarcastic or negative in any way. I appreciate all time and effort you've put into this - now back to watching!
      Cheers 🍻

@@UltraInstinctLink Never thought of that meaning arising from my butchering of Sonia's name lol. But that's actually a really interesting point. Glad you're enjoying the video so far, I'd love to read your full thoughts once you finish it.

@@anotherblowncartridgeSo, I should address my personal bias first, which is that I really enjoyed TotK for what it is albeit with some complaints regarding the presentation of the story/cutscenes(they should not have been accessible randomly in my opinion as the game literally spoils itself if you get certain memories before others, where in BotW it didn't matter because you were told what happened in the past from the beginning, the memories just provided more insight into the lives of the people involved with trying to stop the Calamity 100 years prior, their relationships and conversations at the time. Where TotK will show you who and how the Light Dragon is and came to be if you go to that glyph first, if it wasn't obvious to new or younger players already, thereby spoiling what should have been a climactic near end-game reveal.) Also I was and do activity look for content like this, that being videos from people who see the positives both within TotK as a game and also what the future has in store for The Legend of Zelda as a franchise. It isn't hard to find, but there are certainly an equal amount if not more videos discussing the disappointments people have with TotK, which arguably do attract more viewers - some of which I can understand and agree with their sentiments regarding the storytelling, as a frequently used example. There are games, books, movies, comics, etc that have more cohesive and compelling writing. That's a fair critique. There are those however who also join the bandwagon for reasons that vary too much to quantify, and their views and comments will add to the numbers, pushing YT to push that type of content and others similar to it, thereby increasing the likelihood of those outside the Zelda fanbase to see, consume, and assume that is the perspective the majority of people have, so they should think that way as well without having played the game to form their own opinions. Having said that you can probably guess that I agree with just about everything you've said here, nothing popped out to me that made my brain go "Nope! I disagree entirely." In fact the point I agree with most and can all but confirm with hard data is the reception to the various Zelda games over the years going up and down and then up again within a few years after their respective release dates. I haven't owned every last Zelda ever made, just all the home console games from OoT through TotK. I've watched all but the first 3 games release to excitement and critical acclaim, then fall into a state of controversy, then fall into a nostalgic era where people go back to the game and decide it was an achievement of it's time, even if it's not perfect gameplay or a cohesive timeline. There are certain messages that I've always taken away from Zelda games going back to my first introduction to the series with OoT, they're the things I want and expect from these games. Simple things like be brave, think before you act, be thoughtful, kind and helpful towards others, remain hopeful, never give up, and also go outside on an adventure and get some fresh air every now and then 😂
TotK and Zelda as a franchise still remind me of all of those things and I know the next installment in the series will as well, because they always do. There's a movie on the way, Nintendo straight up came out to say there's no DLC for TotK because they're focusing on the future of the series, and any time I look for others who are as positive and hopeful about the future of Zelda as I am, I find them. The future remains bright 🌞
