Sharpening Serrated Knives on the Tormek

  • In October the NEW*** MB 102*** will be available in the USA that is both a Front Vertical Base for sharpening edge trailing and also will be great for grinding on the flat side of wheels. This will be like getting two products in one as I had to buy an MB100 and a separate Front vertical base from another maker

    Hey Paul thanks for the great video, I received my front vertical base today and do appreciate all the informative videos you produce! My tormek would still be in the corner not being used I love all the tips and tricks you show us.

    Great video. Schleifjunkies also sells CBN rods in 6, 8, and 10 mm diameter and 400, 800, 1200 grit that can easily be used on Hapstone R1 and R2 jigs, and probably other fixed angle jigs too. Slower than the method you show, but can be very precise.

    Hey Paul, TORMEK just came out with a new MB-102 jig that converts the front horizontal mounts to vertical, just like the jig you got from Schleifjunkies. The MB-102 also has a side mounted extension pivot that allows you to grind off the side of diamond wheels or the Tornado wheel from WoodTurners.

    Aloha from Hawaii. I’m a beginner sharper and love your videos. Detailed and very informative.
    I was wondering, when sharpening a serrated knife, will the serrated point lessen. That’s just from an experience of letting one of my friends sharpen my Benchmade half serrated blade EDC. Half of it was gone after he sharpened it even if I told him to not touch the serrated area.

      He probably tried to hit it from the front serrated side like a regular blade common mistake. Going at the flat side at an almost zero angle will pull the point back up on many serrated knives. Often stropping edge trailing the flat side brings rolled teeth back to life on Serrated EDCs some times if the are really warm you do have to cut new scallops. That can be a huge pain in the ass

    Mdf wheels are pretty popular diy solution. It seems to me it would be fairly easy to knock it down so there would be a 1/8 or so larger edge to it. I wonder how well that would hold up to honing inside serrations. Also wondering how a circle out of perhaps luan would do, or many sandwiching 1 or 2 pieces of slightly larger diameter cardboard between mdf would hold up. Just wondering out loud on diy solutions.

      MDF may be a little to hard for serrations and it helps for it to have a little give- paper has worked well and leather I think MDF may give you to much chatter but if you try it let me know how it goes

    What is the reasoning for the nearly flat angle on the flat side vs a more traditional 17-20 deg?

      the goal is to raise a new burr inside the scallop but you don't want it to be a really strong burr because serrated knives are the hardest burr to remove so the steeper the angle you will raise a bigger burr and also wear out the scallop over time by going zero to flat you don't wear out the scallop. If you watch my video on my 1x30 method for serrated knives I also take a very close to zero angle for the same reason and It's easier on the 1x30 than the Tormek but both work.

    You got that guy's name wrong. That was the late Dr. Vadim Kraichuk at Knifegrinders who sold the first front vertical base. I also tried to order the FVB from Knifegrinders and was also given a refund.

    I’m new to this but it seems this process would kind of smooth out the scallops to making them start to disappear. Am I completely wrong here?

      david nevins - you are right. these knives should be sharpened on the scalloped side.

      @@user-nx2dh5bx5n no incorrect we raise the bur on the flat side then remove it from the scallop side but this is my least favorite way to do serrated knives I show it for those who only have Tormek and no other options

      Yes because the sharpening is done on the flat side to raise the a new burr inside the scallop then we knock off the burr

      @ALXSHARPEN you mentioned you have other favorite ways to sharpen serrated knives - what are they? I would agree if you only have a Tormek (or similiar machine) the only way to sharpen serrated knives is the way you showed - grind the flat side raising burr that must be removed from the scalloped side. each time you do it this way you are shortening the scallop depth so eventually the scallop disappears (a long time down the road). But if you only have a Tormek this is all you can do.

      All I did was hone them for a quick pass the paper wheel is a little more aggressive than the leather it’s good for stubborn burrs

    so you're grinding on the straight side, not actually getting into the scallops. Eventually, the scallops will disappear. I was taught not to grind on the straight side.

      It’s at almost a zero angle so it’s purpose is to raise a new burr go watch it and look close I have tested this many times it’s far superior to every method and we are often taught things that are wrong. Today I posted a video on lawn blades yesterday I saw a guy teaching to balance them on a nail on CZcams- so just because you were taught it doesn’t make it correct today. I put my method for serrated knives up against anything out there and you can do the scalloped side too but it usual takes away from the look. How I do very warn serrated knives is different this is for just dull not ones that have almost no scallopes left.

      How many people have been taught they can’t be sharpened? Thousands and it’s simply not true. I have people say it all the time i didn’t think they could be sharpened it’s simply not correct.

      @ALXSHARPEN talking about superior ways - checkout Curry Custom Sharpening youtube videos on sharpening serrated knives. he uses either a belt or some radius wheels to sharpen serrated knives.

      I was trying to perfect that even before Clif I tried the Jade Carver wheels for months almost 3 years ago on just about everything you can imagine . I could not get them to run well. They wobble to much and you can't see the serration to line it up well. I know several who have tried it and are also having the same difficulty today. Any time you have to use an arbor coupling you sometimes have those issues and this is also why I say what works for some may not work for all. Cliff seems to like what he's doing and that's fine. I like how I do them the video even says there is what No Shortage of ways to do them." Find what works for you. Cliff is great we are friends if you want to follow what he says then go for it. We do almost everything the same but we do a few things differently This is one that we do differently. I will just say that many have wrote and also commented that my method works great for them. So use it or don't it doesn't mean Cliffs right and I'm wrong or vise versa. We are just giving you options. Go look at my short video from a day ago I show how you can do the scallop side by turning the belt inside out. That way you can also see it. Also making the belt splitter is really cheap and a great use for your old belts @@user-nx2dh5bx5n

      Well if you want to come be the camera man your welcome to. Most of my followers I believe are more interested in seeing what I am doing more so than seeing me. But when you are a one man show and filming on a tripod you do the best you can. I try to get you the best angles to see the work being done but I also have to work around the gear sometimes so trust me it’s not as easy as many people think so yes I could shoot super wide but I don’t think that’s really helpful to someone who’s really trying to see exactly what I am doing. In fact I plan to shoot some more things even closer up as it’s the really small details when sharpening that make a big difference but are not always easy to capture on camera
