  • Just like stropping has tuns of way to do go about doing it sharpening serrations has no shortage of ways to do it. I have tried many methods and tools but this method I have developed has given me the very best results. I have listed many of the things needed below but also be sure to visit my "For Sharpeners" section on my website I have 95% off all the things I use in my shop in one place easy for you to find and I add to it regularly so you don't have to search through videos to look for most things. Here is the link

    ***Sorry his website is down *** Not sure why ***** I would consider this it looks like it may even work better for making custom sizes AND FAR LESS MONEY I see no reason this would not work great amzn.to/3I6Ytno I have ordered one to test if you want to wait for my review
    **I will leave his link up for now incase it comes back alive***
    Here is the belt splitter I use it's from Hardcore Products the cost $160 I made my own jig insert to help split the belts down to really small size. I can make them around 3mm having belts of any custom size has been really great for many projects in my shop. hardcoregrinders.com/product/...
    NOT SURE WHY HARDCORE LINK ISN'T WORKING BUT THIS LOOKS LIKE A GREAT ALTERNATIVE AT 1/3 the price It's for leather but I am sure it will work amzn.to/3I6Ytno
    Here is a Basic 2" to 1" splitter that's very affordable $69 but if you have a 3D printer or laser like me you could cut your own inserts or even make out of wood something to help make small belts easier. amzn.to/3ucGPL5
    If you can't buy either you can also cut them with scissors. They don't come out as nice and perfect but I did this for a long time until I found the belt splitter above and saved ups to get it. Be sure to take note of the blade styles as they are different on different splitters.

    Just a warning to those folks that aren't familiar with the Dremel wire wheels. Always wear eye protection when using them. They WILL start throwing the wires off after some use, especially at higher speeds. They end up in your forehead, your hands, your hair, your clothes, and potentially in your eyes. Tho' he is using slow speeds here, still be careful.

      Many thanks! I really wanted to show it the best I could because when sharpening serrated knives it's important to really know what to do so you get great results. There are plenty of other methods, but some are really difficult to get consistent great results. I have tried Jade Carver radial wheels and continue to try them but have not found a good system to grind with them on. IMO they need a good guided sharpener guide so you can constantly hit the scallop just right, but doing that has been a big challenge. I have a buddy across the River Matt who runs Potomac Sharpening who has been working on making better arbor adapters for the Jade Carver wheels thats a move in the right direction. The arbor adapters I have tired had to much play but what would be best would be a wheel IMO CBN that needed no arbor adapter and a arm like a Twice as sharp machine would be awesome but you also need to see where its going to hit exactly for this to work well. But what I showed here has worked very well for me and I have had very happy customers so to make a long comment even longer. Yes I still want to create the ultimate serration sharpening machine but I accept that this may be the holly grail search for sharpeners.

    As always great and informative presentation. Back, years ago, when I sharpened commercially, my wife bought me a Mini Rx Hone honing machine. This little machine held a selection of ceramic stones of varying shapes and worked then in a reciprocating motion... very fast. That little puppy was perfect for serrated blades. I looked them up to see if they still existed and they do but they are terribly expensive. Back in the 1980's they were about $150.00. Stones were about $10.00 each. I do see that there are a couple of used ones on eBay for under $200.00. They are a great option for serrated blades if one can still get the stones.

    At school we were taught that that shiny overturned burr was called the white line, easier to see on wood chisels and planer blades and what to look for on scraper blades. For serrated knives I have a tapered diamond stone that works quite well, once you have the inward burr drag it very lightly through the serrations each one in turn.(its a pity nothing like that is ever taught in high school classes any more, the basics of looking after tools)

      @@ALXSHARPENIt is very sad. Not that long ago I met 4 young over 20 (under 30) youngsters just staring at a car parked with a flat tire. They had no idea how to fix it and were trying to figure out if they had enough to call a tow truck for help. Without touching anything I talked them through the whole process of how to get the jack, how to loosen the lug nuts, and how to swap the flat for the spare, etc. I learned 2 of them were college grads and 1 of them was still going. It kind of freaked me out. In America these kids had grown up without ever once having a parent or a shop teacher or someone teach them how to change a flat tire. We had some good talks as they took turns at the different steps. They were actually initially of the mind that the flat tire and wheel should go in a narby trash dumpster and they would buy a new one. Corrected that. Told them it was stupid (politely) and explained. Told them of an open shop nearby that plugs tires and explained the process. Also pointed out a new wheel for their 12 year old car would cost more than a new tire. They were pretty grateful afterwards and we parted with me utterly amazed at the less than 3rd world education the kids here today are getting.
      I say bring back the shop classes and the home economics classes. I have met many 40ish and younger women who have zero idea how to run a sewing machine. And no, they can't even make a cherry pie. Unheard of to my generation, I am a senior citizen. I took the male classes as a kid, but even I know how to run a sewing machine, 'cause Momma did her job as a parent and taught me how to run hers. I say don't worry about gender, if the girl wants to take wood shop classes or learn how to weld and fix a 2 cycle engine or a boy wants to learn how to cook and sew, let them encourage it. Teach them something, not nothing useful, which is where we are now. Totally scary to think how utterly useless and helpless the next generation will be when none of them know how to do anything themselves.

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Not sure what part you mean the highest grit belt I tend to use is 1200 - for serrations I like 1,200 or 800 grit Trizact belts but keep in mind they are called A15 (1200) and A30 (800) that's just an equivalent comparison to abrasives that use grit as a measurement. Now if we are talking Diamond Sprays or 3m Radial polishing discs. They go by microns just another form of abrasive measurement scale. So 1 micron to keep it in a form most americans are use to I will often say the grit equivalent. So 14,000 grit is around 1 micron. 3 micron is around 8000-9000 grit. So the diamond sprays I put on my stropps are 14,000 grit so that may be the 14,000 you heard me say. There are micron grit converters on the internet and charts that will often help people understand it. There are actually several abrasive measurement scales even beyond microns and grit and the A15, A30 system we see on Trizact belts so countries have their own so you will see some from Russia that are different. I use to have a cool chart off all of the different ones I will see if i can find it. There is a lot and some use the same but depending on the country don't mean the same just adding to the confusion.

      @@Goochgravysuppliers not really in my experience , but if that works for you enjoy or make a video on your sharpening channel and share what works for you but like I said my channel isn't for the common person it's for people who want to sharpen as a business or for themselves and a sandpaper and a dowel isn't really a good option for me. But when you do you fist video showing how well your method works let me know so I can go watch it.

      @ALXSHARPEN tried to respond to Ron, lol. I haven't sharpened any bread knives, so I was just going off of a guy I watch alot. Curry Custom Cutlery. I see no reason why it wouldn't work, but I don't see it being able to get anywhere near what you got that one to unless it's a cheap steel with low abrasive resistant.
