    Can this software and lasers be run from a tablet? I plan on engraving knife blades and scales. I have not started a business yet, but already i have two Tormek T8 and a 2 x 42 belt grinder. I am retiring from my 37 year career in Aerospace next year and have been sharpening for friends and co-workers for a couple years. I really enjoy sharpening and collecting knives...trying to keep enjoying myself with a hobby / small businees after retirement. Great videos!

There are other less expensive options but if it's in your budget this one is the very best for small business and knife engravings. Super fast nice deep engravings. www.xtool.com/products/xtool-f1-ultra-20w-fiber-diode-dual-laser-engraver?ref=j27a8sy1&

    I just received my Toolcker to find that the platen is almost non-magnetic! So trying to attach the buckle guide on with rare earth magnets will not hold very well. Must be some form of stainless steel. I’ll try some type of double sided tape and see how it holds up. My fear is that the heat of the belt will cause the adhesive to lose its tack hold. I could try and replace the platen with a mild steel version.

    So when it comes down to it , which knives do you only sharpen on stones ? Thanks.

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN Před dnem

      So we are on the same page when you say stones because we refer to many things in sharpening as stones, do you mean actual stones? like flat sharpening stones , or are we including wheels that are stone? I am going to assume you are meaning Flat Stones used for hand sharpening. For me I mostly use flat stones to finish Japanese chisel grind knives to remove the final burr as a final step. I use multiple methods and sharpeners to sharpen them but will often use a flat very high grit stone on the flat side to remove the final burr but when it comes to sharpening I use mostly guided sharpening systems. I do almost no free hand sharpening. My main sharpeners are 1x30s ,2x42, Tormek T8s and TSPROF and I use what I feel is best for each. Since my sharpeners I own can do many different grinds so often the type of grind like ,Hollow grinds, flat, convex, scandi will often determine what sharpener I pick to use.

    hoping you do a you tube video on some of these higher end tougher knives to sharpen. I learn something pretty well from every one of your videos. I appreciate your comments on this video. After 33 years in LE I retired from it 13 years ago and started to be serious about sharpening. My test several years ago was to do a bunch of family members knives for free (and practice) and invite them to return them to me for sharpening anytime they want, of course no cost to them. Results, hardly ever had any of them take me up on the offer. Kind of blew away my confidence. But I've continued to sharpen and try to perfect my skills. Your videos and encouragement may finally get me to dive in and just go for it.

  • @thechumpsbeendumped.7797

    I asked a question on the livestream but now it's over I can't see it or whether you answered it. I use a non-Tormek machine that with a wheel cost less than just a replacement wheel and I'm getting results that appear to be on par with tormek. What I wanted to know is have you ever used off-brand Whetstone wheels to compare the results? The replacement wheels for my machine are £23 for 200mm and £25 for a 250mm wheel and they're gradable with diamond plates in the same way as the Tormek. The 1x30 is very useful for axes, machetes etc and great for getting rid of chips quickly, I also use it for extremely dull knives to put a basic edge on a knife then finish it on the Wheteston grinder.

    • @ALXSHARPEN

    I will add one more thing to this. I had a failed update, to the point that the software could not see the S1 via usb. Dozens of attempts, rolling back to an older version of XCS, multiple restarts and reboots of the machine and computer did not solve the problem, and I was done. I thought I had bricked the laser and was about to contact customer support when on a whim I pulled out the security usb dongle on the back of the machine. Kaboom!! The update sailed through without issue, and I was back in business. If removing the security dongle is a required step I sure cannot find that spelled out anywhere. At any rate, I am now good on the S1 and I hope y'all get your problems solved.

      @@johnhise4225great information to add sometimes it’s the craziest of things that solves it. But pulling out the dongle and putting back in is a pretty easy fix to bad you had to go through hell to find it

    Amazing video!! And great advice!! I’m fairly new and always turn down high end knives. I actually have a little deal with another local sharpener that is much more skilled and send those high end knives his way and he tosses me a couple dollars for the referrals.

    I was considering a tsprof as well. I went with a worksharp because tsprof is made in Russia.

      I try to keep politics out of sharpening. WS stuff is good I don't love their lack of stone options but I have no issue saying I have never seen a sharpener as well made as TSPROF they are in my opinion the very best manual sharpener in the world. The people I have dealt with at the company have been fantastic. IMO most of the sharpening community around the world are great people and something we all have in common is enjoying having sharp knives and tools.The company has business relations in the USA in fact they just moved to an east coast location. So I try not to judge by what a government does as most of us have very little to do with that stuff as I am sure is the case with the workers at TSPROF they clearly have a passion for making fantastic sharpeners.

    Hi Paul, this comment is totally unrelated to the user engraver. However as a sharpener I have a super important question to ask you. I finally purchased the FoxTrop grinder, reversed it and equipped with a leather strop and a paper wheel. So far so good then I realized that I have no idea with what to load those wheels with. Can you let me know this info please I would be so appreciative. Thank you for taking some time out of your busy schedule. Claude M.
