- This review benchmarks the EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra Gaming video card, using NVIDIA's Ampere silicon. We've tested the 3080 FTW3 with all 3 VBIOSes, including the XOC VBIOS, for overclocking, thermals, and noise.
Sponsor: Thermaltake Core P3 on Amazon (geni.us/x0H6c)
The EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra Gaming goes up against previous cards we've tested, as we begin to slowly compile a list of the best and worst 3080s. So far, we haven't had any that land in "objectively bad" camp -- but there's time yet. We now have the EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra, the ASUS TUF OC, Gigabyte Eagle, and Founders Edition, and we have a few more to work through in between the other reviews. In this review, we're focusing entirely on thermals, noise, noise-normalized thermals, power-normalized thermals, power, and overclocking, with no focus on gaming. The gaming results are roughly the same as in our RTX 3080 review, plus a couple FPS here and there. It's the quality of life and OC features that really matter for these.

Hi, is Afterburner working for you? I get 22h error code with a 3080 Gaming x Trio. Thank you
I'am running evga xc3 3080 should i flush the 450w ftw3 bios is it safe, can you bench it? I'am in russia and it's very cold already I need more heating :)
3080 FTW3 surprisingly weak result really..
Great professional non-shill production, thank you (except that thermaltake case, but man is that a good native ad... and a nice case)
i wouldn't call this a review exactly it's more like a comprehensive breakdown of the card ..
why don't you add a section where you literally say '' buy it '' or '' don't buy it'' and why
only gripe i got with the channel.
I find it funny how in the US this is one of the most expensive 3080's to get. But where I got it in Australia it was one of the cheapest, almost matching the FE card in for price
Wasn't aware of that! Thanks for the info. It helps a lot to have viewers from other regions fill us in on details like this, since we can't keep our eyes on global pricing. Thanks for sharing!
Yep. 1259 AUD. Absolutely a bargain.
You sure it's actually the Ultra model? They look the same, but there's a very large price difference.
Yeah, FTW models (at least for me) have always been the cheaper option.
@@GamersNexus to add to that, the reason for it is the cards have been universally increased well beyond MSRP. MSRP was 1139 AUD but just about all cards start at 1400. The EVGA FTW3 Ultra is 1260 from a store called PLE. It's 1500 elsewhere. For some odd reason only one retailer sells EVGA at their MSRP and funny enough the other variants at the same stores are well over MSRP same as other stores. Must of had a deal or something. That's the only reason it's "cheap" for us because everything else has been price gouged that bad.
*"fan RPM doesn't mean anything when considered in a vacuum..."*
Right Steve! Because it's very hard for a fan to move air in a vacuum.
Perhaps a vacuum could make for an interesting cooling setup.
@@CaveyMoth Not sure if serious or crazy but vacuums are literally used for insulation ( eg, vacuum flask ) there is near-zero cooling potential in a vacuum.
@@CaveyMoth A vacuum is the best kind insulator, so a horrible cooling setup. In a vacuum you lose two out of four types of heat transfer, you are not able to shed heat by conduction or convection, since phase changes are usually not feasible as well, you're left with only radiation. That's why our main method of insulation is using air, which as a gas is much closer to a vacuum then water. Anything that traps a layer of air, like Styrofoam or dow jackets or double glazed windows will be an excellent insulator, even better if it traps a vacuum.
Bravo sir, bravo!
I guess one could use a vacuum to create a pressure gradient to succ the heat away.
I got my FTW Ultra through their new queue system. HUGE kudos to EVGA for doing something no one else was willing to do. They literally built a queue system out of their notify dates going all the way back to launch and sent e-mails to people in order with links to a GPU only they could buy... EVGA FTW!
I signed up for the queue in Feb 2021 and just got an email that I could buy the 3080 FTW3 today!
@@LLawlietKris8 I got my email today also! This is my 2nd card I got through the que system, first one was the 3060.
@@FunTimeWithSouls Nice!!
@@LLawlietKris8 Had the same thing happen to me. Couldn't get it for myself, but my brother had just ordered a 6600xt for $200 less than the 3080 through evga, so he cancelled that order and used up my queue haha.
@@isaakix12 Glad it worked out! At first I wasn't sure if I'd want to spend the money for the 3080 because I have to pay for the steam deck within the next 3 months so I offered the 3080 to my coworkers first but they didn't need it so I ended up biting the bullet and getting it while I had the chance.
The most important part of buying an EVGA card: the warranty.
Fax
Seems to be the only good thing about the card
I've owned evga cards since the 580s, never had any issues
True, everyone says the tuf cards are the best but Asus has terrible warranty so idk
My Zotac 970 died 6 months after warranty expired. Teaches me to buy shit at launch.
Man, so much respect for the no nonsense format. Tell us the stuff that matters and skips the marketing hype. Top stuff!
EVGA's support has been awesome for me on the very few occasions where I have any issue with their gear. I've only been building computers a few years, but they are BY FAR the best manufacturer in terms of support in my opinion.
I have this GPU and an EVGA 1200w Plat PSU. I'm very happy.
Thankyou for uploading this, been waiting for a good video of the EVGA card! 🙏
I was planning on getting the TUF since I'm not going to overclock, but my local Microcenter restocked and only had the Strix and FTW3, so I ended up going with the EVGA. It's a bit overkill since I'm running everything at factory clock settings, but I did get an 850w 80+ gold psu, so I might try my hand at some overclocking once the weather cools down in Texas so my room doesn't become an oven.
Would the increased frequency stability improve 1% and 0.1% lows?
The analytical breakdown and walk through of the cards are so helpful. Thank you!
Been waiting for this!! Thank you guys!
Is there a noticeable difference in liquid metal application with uneven die height versus something else with a more flat die? Such as with the Asus TUF card versus the EVGA 3080 card?
4:46 This bug seem to appear with EVGA Flow Control as well, when it sometimes shows my CPU temps skyrocketing off the charts for one frame or so.
I can't believe they still haven't fixed that bug, it makes setting a custom fan curve impossible because the fans will randomly speed up to 100%, good thing I gave up and just left it on auto lol
Love your vids dude. Appreciate you lots and have been waiting for this review. Thanks!
love your vids, been watching them since i've started learning about computers
I get the reasons why, but still a little disappointed a few benchmarks weren't included..
Mainly because nobody else ensures data accuracy like you guys, it's always good to have a reliable references point.
Yes, I'm very disappointed that I watched the whole thing without seeing the tests I wanted to see. I could care less about half of the tests here. I just want a reliable source for gaming performance on newest firmware updates.
Even if the Tuf is better in some objective sense, in Australia it costs about $200 more than the FTW3, so it's a tuf sell.
another awesome vid! very informational, I always love watching your vids and will always come back for more!
Just got my one delivered this morning. It's like this video was made for me
Bought this card, it's a beast! The optional 450watt bios was a huge, huge boost if you overclock.
I have an 850W powersupply, am I good to run that optional bios?
Yes
2:07 two wizards looking at their creation lmao
I don’t know of the right one is Adanos or Inos follower but the left one is definitely sided with Beliar.
Awesome review. Very excited to receive mine from EVGA tomorrow. Praise be (insert preference) for the EVGA queue!
Amazing review. All the technical information you would want and more.
Just got one of these used in late 2022 for about 580 USD (equivalent). That transferable warranty is a very nice feature, especially for prospective second-hand buyers.
Same here. Just ordered one for the same price (after tax). Should be arriving in a couple days. Can't wait! I think the warranty is 3 years on these.
@@eamontanner6778 I just got one off ebay, and its a product number ending in -rx, or B-stock. I'd double check when you get your card because those only come with a 1 year warranty.
12:09 looks like Spain and Portugal for the contact mapping.
The one we have waiting for yes :)
Been waiting for this review
This is the card I've been eyeing the most for my first liquid cooled build.
So for overclocking, without XOC, LN2 or Water-cooling etc, which 3080 is the best for just getting the highest clocks on the stock cooler by just cranking sliders?
Watching all these reviews of a card I'll never be able to get a hold of until 2021.
Until the end of Q2 2021 if you're lucky
Thanks for the video, managed to get one for MSRP yesterday !
Omgosh where!!???
I come for info on tech, but I love the shenanigans like the thumbnails and at 18:48
I swear with every generation I feel like EVGA does a controversial color design for more attention lol. All of them should include googly eyes for the lipstick red.
Some of them in Korea actually do have googly eyes. (They shipped with, attachment is optional)
With the LED off I think the silver look is MUCH better
Ima firin mah lazor
*_Joker LIPS_*
@Bobby Frags I mean there are people who don’t care, but just why this color? Just don’t add any accent colors for god sale. Adding RGB and then having a bold red outline is pointless.
Interesting how the different versions/partners doesn't really matter with the 3080, it was not like that with the 1080's you could get ~10% difference in performance depending on the card...
Omg core P3 advert wow, glad to see TT still trying, I love my P3, thought the P3 was long forgotten
Checked the review as EVGA notified me I could buy one signed up on the 18th .
Like how homeboy grabbed that card and dashed out the door.
Nice review.. but PLEASE do one for the MSI Gaming X Trio. I can't decide if I want to pre-order that one or the Asus TUF..... :(
Tuf is better
They aren't supposed to do reviews if we can't buy them. Don't you internet?? ;)
@@riba2233 At the same price there is a debate (im referring to TUF OC). TUF has a few more power phases but there are other factors
@@IronGolem2009 tuf is much better, for many reasons. Build quality, thermals, dual bios, better price etc
@@riba2233 TUF OC and Gaming X Trio are the same price (750 USD). Never before on a GPU release (or mb release for that matter) have we made judgements based off which product has dual bios. Personally I’d rather take TUF OC but remember for the same price the Trio has the same noise normalized thermals (according to other reviewers, I want to see what Steve reveals), and has some of the best out of the box boost clocks and acoustics. Just sayin I think there is a debate there and am interested in Steve’s analysis.
And yes I understand the TUF OC has a beefier power delivery system. But again that doesn’t make MSI’s inadequate. MSI’s past Trios have always been pretty standard in VRM quality but have still been very popular. Just throws another factor into the decision-making. Interested to see what Steve says :)
Hi Steve , another video with the numbers and data your following is looking for. Great to see, it keeps us coming back. I was hoping to see a build with all Gen 4 parts if possible. I'm contemplating building around the x570 when the the new Ryzen 5000 series CPUs arrive. As far as I have seen, no one has put a video out of a build with all Gen 4 components. ( 3000 series graphic card, gen 4 M.2, Ryzen CPU ) and the proper speed ram to take advantage of it all. I would love to know if I build my new PC around all Gen 4 , will it be worth it?
Love the content as always. Can't wait for the Lian Li Galahad review and also the 3080 Strix review.
Pretty excited to be getting my FTW3 in tomorrow. Why did I go with it? It was the first one available for me to purchase given the current stock situation. Kudos to EVGA for their queue system btw, worked like a charm.
Sick
Enjoy it man! Just got mine last week and am loving it!
When did you put your email in for notifications and how long did it take for your order to be go through?
It really does work. I had a chance to buy this card in the video but decided to wait. Maybe you ended up with it instead:)
EVGA's queue system really shows that they care about getting these cards in their customer's hands
Just bought the 12gb FTW 3 Ultra from Micro Center in NY for $999 and the extended warranty which gets me the 3090 up to a Ti just paying the difference. Putting it through It’s paces and so far it’s Stellar! Need some Ray Tracing enabled games now to see how good it is. Xbox GamePass and Steam are going to give it a workout.
How are you enjoying it dude? Just ordered mine and it comes today!
I was lucky enough to pick up the FTW 3080. Super happy with it.
After watching the downhill mountain biking nvidia cap controversy commentary I got inspired and decided I wanted to try it out. Today I bought a new bike and went for a ride to try it out. Thanks for the inspiration Steve!
So happy I was able to snag one of these from EVGA's step-up program. Bought a 2080 Super in the summer and my step up expired one day after the launch of the 3080 so I got really lucky
The one we’ve all been waiting for lol
Speak for yourself.
I own one and I was waiting for this
For real right, finally!
Technically we've all been waiting for all of em.
@Jacob its a big price drop from the 2080ti with a huge performance upgrade, in no way is this over priced.
I absolutely love the way you don't gloss over the aberrant data, but explain it instead. 👍
Do a video where you recomend the best 3080 for stock use and which for OC. And divide them into categories like overall, thermals, power, acoustics etc
Holy crap, the contact pressure graph actually looks like a square for once.
Gotta be honest, EVGA really got my tinker/DIY/tuner itch going with those temp sensors and software GUI... Well played, EVGA lol and great vid as always GN!
I just bought a core P3 and transplanted my system to it back on Friday. It comes unassembled, good and bad as you can set it up as desired, but it's definitely a project.
I'm totally waiting to see what yeston does with their shroud. Cutepet big navi, yes please!
This is gonna be very useful in a year or so when we can buy them :p
By then there will be a whole new line of 7nm 3080s ........
When you can buy them you won't want to!
Let the scalpers keep them. Muahaha!
@@RobBCactive lol very true! AMD will come out with big Navi then nvidia will try to beat the value.. then its buy time!
This one has a queue system.
Just need to see the Strix and I can decide between the ftw, TUF, or strix.
Steve, because it's not a big increase in gaming compared to stock 3080 and no slides. Is it not worth to overclock the card then? Specifically in a gaming only scenario.
Does anyone else find the noise normalized thermal tests in these kinds of segments absolutely hilarious? You guys should start doing noise normalized tests for LN overclocking too.
who else needs this to play osrs?
Gotta prepare for osrs HD with RTX on
Getting 99 Firemaking with RTX ON!!!
Somebody added that big red clown smile to the end and thought, "Perfect."
I crammed one in a corsair 220T so you can't even see it. Ha!
Good news!!! The new version if this card its black. Can confirm since i own this card and they fixed that
i liked red lips
In November/Dezember they changed it to a Black one.
@@RusticShine i hope so I just got my 3080 today from mirco center, if its a red lip i might return mine or sell it
Thanks for the daily content.
Didn't think I would be seeing an ad for the Core P3 in 2020
This is the one i ended up with. I just wanted a TUF but came across one of these and rolled the dice on it. Unnecessary for me to pay the premium, but whatever. Maybe I'll care to overclock one day, but for now I'm undervolting to run cool at the cost of just a couple frames.
Soooo with normal VBIOS i was idling anywhere from 45-55C with ambient temp being between 21-22C...
After switching to the OC VBIOS I'm now idling at 34-37C with current ambient at 21C... I may never have thought to make that change for improving idle temps without your testing...
Thank you Tech-Jesus and Tech-Apostles for your enlightenment.
Hey, im actually getting this card tomorrow. I currently have the 3080 ventus OC, do i need to download anything in prep for the evga card or can i plug it in and im set? Then i can download the vbios after?
Makes sense. The OC BIOS has a more aggressive fan curve. Jacob said thats the only difference
@@ASTRALEGION did you pay a scalper?
@@tiefighter5159 nope, i got my first 3080 from microcenter then i got another from signing up for EVGAs notify me thing. Contrary to popular memes, these cards are available albeit slightly.

I like how you reviewed this card over a month ago, and its still no avilable.
I got this card shortly after the Auto Notify, queue system. Working great so far. Got a nice OC on it as well.
I got the XC3 Ultra as I managed to snag one off Amazon early October and the card is booty cheeks. Its extremely hot even for 330W limit and loud during gaming. I'm getting 80c at 80%+ fan speed. And yes my case it very well cooled in a 70C environment. Had 2080 Gaming X Trio in same system and it was 72C at 50% fan speed during load. I am doing step up for just an extra $40 for that FTW3 version. What are the temps when gaming? How loud is it? What's the fan speed % when gaming? During gaming whats max core clock / memory you can get?

How long did it take between signing up for notifications and buying the card?
I'd like to say "ASUS TUF wins, better cooler for less", but the "less" part would make no sense as both cards are unobtainium.
I have resigned to waiting till the Spring before getting something because they were retards that decided to launch without stock - All those brilliant minds yet they didn't learn from 1000 series release.
Guess I am waiting and hoping AMD 5800x and Asus X570 Dark has enough stock for that upgrade.
@@nocturnal101ravenous6 lmao at thinking AMD is going to have stock for more than a minute
@@seen3804 For a CPU..........yeah no problem, there won't be near the demand a lot of people are on Zen 2 and already on X570, you would be stupid to immediately upgrade and not wait till fall next year for AM5.
Personally I don't like AMD/ATI GPUS every one I had, I had major issues with either driver wise or hardware parts burning out faster than they should have because they decided to emulate 200-400 series Nvidia GPUs.
Never had issues getting a CPU on launch for builds with the exception of 9000 and 10000 series Intel parts maybe 1 or 2 lines way back of AMD where I had to wait 2 weeks from launch for middlemen suppliers to get the stock in as it was delayed and OEMs hogged the supply. That's was before E-tailors were even a thing though.
I got one. XD. Through cyberpower pc.
@@nocturnal101ravenous6 calling people stupid for not waiting another yr is stupid in itself man. Also nobody cares about the new cpu launches unless youre into workstations. Any cpu on the market now is great for gaming. looks like there was a lot more care and attention to the guts of this card compared to what's out there now. solid choice!
The TUF has a new VBIOS that allows the card to reach 375 W now. The power limit fix isn't listed in the description of the new VBIOS (thoughts that Asus is trying to keep the mistake quiet).
would be great to know how the air cooling compares with water cooling these 3000 series cards
So, the bottom-line here is to get the one with the best noise/power normalized temps.

Why don't you guys do an undervolting a 3080 tutorial. I've seen it on other channels and it look like you can drop about 100W without losing any performance.
I'm running my Aorus master at 935mV 2055MHz. 58 - 60 degrees on load.
This is an OC enthusiast card, and we didn't see any frequency OCing results. For instance, people have supposedly been getting over 2100mhz on the Strix models with the 450W bios that is stock on them, but the FTW3 doesn't appear to get anywhere close to that despite the vbios with the increased power limit. Yet you were able to set your world record with one of these cards. Something isn't adding up here, and we should really see frequency maximus at max fans, etc.... To make a more informed decision for those of us who ARE interested in OCing our cards.
I can get 2115 on my ftw3 ultra
I can get stable 2100 on my ftw3
I'm stable at +165 Core and +600 Memory on my FTW3 Ultra. Benchmark Core clock is recorded at 2160MHz, with a 2130MHz average clock. Average temp was 58 °C. I run a more modest +135/+400 for daily use to keep temps down.
Benchmark is with GPU fans at 100% in a Corsair 465x case with all panels on. Case and CPU fans set at default curves. Stock 10850K CPU.
