Those were great narrative shows with actual story lines back then. They were SO
much more interesting than watching today's boring "short attention span"
reality TV showing people hang around their house or going shopping
and getting angry with each other. Hollywood has really gone down the

that is so so so true and that is why i prefer me-tv, antenna tv, and get tv and what i can get on you tube.
Wish i could get METV etc. So i rely on youtube. So agree today tv sucks

Can't blame Hollywood, they make what their target audience want, and that is young adults.
ALL OF THESE VARIOUS OLDER CLASSIC TV EPISODES ARE REALLY GREAT TO SEE ONCE AGAIN SO MANY YEARS AFTER THE DAYS OF OUR YOUTH WITH MANY NOW VERY WELL KNOWN ACTORS BEFORE THEY REACHED THEIR ULTIMATE FAME -

This is one of the better episodes. I do question sending a spotter plane up at night with WW2 technology...not to mention Binghamton sending the 73 out without a mechanic. But if you pick nits you miss how great this episode is!
Actually this is really tame and less action-oriented than most other eps!
Joe Flynn was a good actor, he passed away young in a swimming pool accident.

The hoisting of the signal flags at the intro confused me at four years of age. I served from 78 to 82 as a signalman on the U.S.S. Independence (CV-62). Too bad it wasn't in color. "I even burn Corn Flakes!"
Filmed at Universal studios which still had the wharf for McHale 's base still up (like the Green Hornet set at 20th Century Fox studios).
"Carpenter, make a note. First thing in the morning, check out all of our chipped beef, have it shipped to McHale's Island." Bwahaaha!
I left the Navy years ago, and, still to this day I cannot eat "chipped beef on toast". Just looking at it makes me nauseous.
This has to be one of the best Episodes since I started watching these. Maybe the 10th or so!
