    Ben Wright appears here as Sir Percy and his accent is terrific. He was actually born in England to an American father and English mother. He appeared in lots of films and television shows in those years, including Hogan's Heroes where he does a pretty good German accent too! I thought he did a really nice job in this episode and it just goes to show you how much an impact can be made by a guest star who is on screen for less than a minute or two.

  • @parrot849
    @parrot849 Před 3 lety +9

    The Tim Conway-Joe Flynn comedy duo was one of the all time, hands down, funniest teams that was ever in show business.
    The only flaws I ever saw in the “Ensign Parker” comic character was on the part of lazy program writing when they’d tend to repeat the same gag line over multiple episodes, for example:
    Parker: ... “Hey! Bandit at 10 O’clock!! Or is it ten thirty? No, maybe ten fifteen....!”
    Or that one where the script line calls for someone to generally ask in a crisis moment:“...anybody got a prayer about now?!”; they’d always have Conway go with that exact same, “...Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the lord..., etc. etc.”, again and again over multiple episodes.
    That’s just lazy script submission, not anything to do with Tim Conway’s talent genius....

    • @Too_reel
      @Too_reel Před 2 lety +1

      That “flaw” of “lazy writing “ is probably because when this was written, they never even thought that the episodes would be put at the fingertips to be able to stream on demand.

    • @parrot849
      @parrot849 Před 2 lety +2

      @@Too_reel - What you say is certainly true enough. But also, I think if you were an avid viewer of the series when it was actually aired on prime time television back in the 60’s, a fan of the show would have been sufficiently adroit to have noticed the same repeated gag used in subsequent multiple episodes just as they can be seen now archived on platforms such as CZcams and be able to draw similar conclusions regarding the “possibility” of lazy writing. I can understand that occurring given the deadline writers were under with an average of 36 episodes a season to create.

      it's no so much that he overacts but that he is stuck in a moronic, wino character. I think the series would have been better without him. He is acting like a 7 year old boy in the body of a 35 year old man. It is annoying to watch. But Captain Binghamton (Joe Flynn) and his brillantly acting assistant carries this comedy on their shoulder.

      @@nelsonporter8387 He is terrible. If i wanted to watch a character with exagerated facial expression and acting like a 7 year old, then i would watch a Tex Avery cartoon not a comedy. Tim Conway does not belong to this more theatrical comedy, he is a slapstick actor in the moronic stooges way.

  • @Wotdermatter
    @Wotdermatter Před 5 lety +5

    I know this supposed to be supposed to be a comedy but what is portrayed here is absurd, to say the least. Nobody in the RN is allowed to wear just a moustache. If anything it is full beard and moustache, nothing less. There would be no such thing as an Honour Guard for a mere Lt. Cdr. and never with bagpipes and the Guard marching in such a sloppy manner with arms swinging everywhere. The whole squad would not salute only the ranking officer or rating appointed to do so. Incorrect salute from the rating and the "RN Officer" and as he is only a Lt. he should not have returned it as he was not the senior ranking officer. The ranking officer should have been called by his rank, Lt. Cdr., not as CDR., which is one rank higher. Gruber was wearing the incorrect insignia for his assignment as a Petty Officer. There should be no "leaves" around the anchor. Admirals both wearing incorrect stripes on shoulders. nothing really positive to say about this episode, except it should be scrapped altogether, due to the number of errors which did not make it funny. Even the mockup/model of the PT boat has been incorrect all the way through these episodes with the wrong design and positioning of the torpedo tubes pointing straight forward into the fore of the boat not out to sea and covered. Most MTB and PT boats did not have covers over the front of their torpedo tubes.
    The whole thing was below being even a farce.

      You are ramming into an open door. Of course it is a grotesque farce. I never took it for much more. Your putting all that effort in a detailed criticism let me thinks you first considered this more highly than i ever did. To me all this Hollywood play is below middle school immaturity level and that is no hyperbole, i mean it quite literally (not american middle school, mind you). Some of this might be caricatured but it still holds some truth about the US army around WWII. Especially propaganda around american icons : "cinema", "cigarets", "jazz music", "Broadway shows", "american big boy attitude", "pornography" all these things for the better or for the worse exported to all the world because of WWII. Here they take a piss at the british royal navy. Not sure what triggered that episode but i'd agree they went further than what i expected. Still, you have to remember that this is Hollywood and it represents the scriptwriters and producers which you might be aware tended to all have the same background and values or lack thereof.

      "I know this is supposed to be supposed to be a comedy..." [sic] and then proceeds to pick it apart like it was a blockbuster budget documentary. Talk about missing the f'ing POINT!
      Bside: didn't Lead Bottom lose that ship's chrono off his desk to a destroyer captain in the Dead-Eye Parker episode back when his toady Carpie was a LtCdr of a rival P. T. Boat? Don't go pulling strings, just enjoy.
