Master of the safety squint!
Not to mention no safety guard on the angle grinder, looks where his wrist is.......... amputee anyone??
You had full trust in your welding skills. If that nut had broken off @2:13 you might have stumbled right into that glowing hot bearing.
Den Kannibalen aus der Nachbarschaft hätte es gefreut Er hätte nicht extra den Grill anzünden müssen 🤣
I like the use of the “safety squint” throughout the build. I use them all the time. Almost works every time.
It works great when welding too
LOL h😂😂😂😂😂😂 .so dangerous
The tang is tooo short

That was hard to watch him running that grinder. Discs don't care what you aren't wearing when they break or shed. He doesn't care for gloves either.
@@Einwetok My thoughts exactly. In the pulp mill I used to manage, guards were mandatory on all grinders.

How do you dare to call this a katana ?!

@@MrPetrion Consider the many master-smiths who dedicated their life to make the katana one of the finest swords of the world. Respect, please.
+1. This isn't a katana in any sense of the word.
True, this is more like a tantô, used only for suicide.
.... If it's because it's a short blade why you two don't consider it a katana .... Then you're right .... The proper name is a wakizashi .... Or short blade katana .... Was worn in tandem with the actual katana at the hip .... Sooooo yes ....
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has used a drill bit as a router.
You have a option to cut bearing easily...but you take harder way

Was looking forward to see you use the whole bearing
Странно ,у него до сих пор все пальцы на руках!
Точно. ТБ у музчины прямо сказать, на высоте.
That's a pretty short/narrow tang for that blade length
@@jtroh8195yeah, the lack of a pin (or any mechanical fastening) tells me this is a show piece rather than a functional tool.
@Tenchigumi not really much to show, though. This thing is blocky as hell, like a cartoon version of a katana
Nice job Safety glass is always good idea👍👍👍 Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇧🇩
How did you make a mistake in the way of cutting at the beginning? There should be a safety for the cutting machine. I hope you hear my advice.❤
Beau travail !!!
Glad to see that he’s finally using an actual welding helmet instead Oxy Acetylene Goggles to stick weld being safer but then get disappointed when I see him working that 52100 WAY TOO COLD even flattening out the back 2/3 of the bearing race at Black Heat taking it from round to flat at black heat for most of the length of the material, it’s likely got micro cracks in the blade because of that

More like a tanto

I have just watched the process of making a Damascus knife in one of the South Korean factories, which is repeating the iron very many times, then twisting it, then repeatedly folding the iron, and in the end the result is a high-quality Damascus knife that can easily cut the iron without being affected.

While this is a good build, the weapon is NOT a katana and only barely falls under the description of a "shirasaya wakizashi" due to its final appearance.
If you want to make a true oriental style blade, please look up more realistic representatives online to see what I (and others) mean. 👍
@@mariomoyano692 Oh I have no problem with the sword friend.
I actually like it, it looks good and is functional, I'm just particular about labelling tools/swords correctly.
yes, using the proper terms for things is important, this could be called a tanto sense that seems to often apply to the tip style, but defiantly not a katana because the handle/guard and length are wrong.
@@FUBuddy I don't mind the final appearance of the handle and guard since, as I mentioned above, they fall under the shirasaya style of oriental blades (basic wood hilt with little to no guard),
In my mind, the shorter length looked to be closer to that of a wakizashi rather than the much shorter tanto, but thats just my opinion. 😁

Man I'm surprised this guy still has his vision and still has fingers, the level of unsafe practice in this video is phenomenal.
Use eye protection, and ffs use the right tools for the job
Bonus points: airborne fine particles and chemical fume inhalation ftw!
So because you wouldn't feel safe with the tools he uses you feel the need to harass him with your meaningless comments. The man is old school and feels safe with how he does things leave him be. If it bothers you so much don't watch
@@huffmanjustin87 ^ this comment. I would never have the balls to do what this smith does. I wear all kinds of protective clothing and wouldn't even touch some of his machines, but just because I wouldn't do it doesn't mean I don't respect his process. I wouldn't even think of harassing him for his choices. He does what he knows and creates beautiful one off pieces from it. I'll still watch, but I'll also admit he has more testicular fortiitude when it comes to machines than I ever had or ever will.
@@Moondog-wc4vm not using protective glasses and many times not even wearing gloves is not "having balls" , it's plain stupid. Old school or not, it's not bravery to risk your eyes or other injuries when you can simply protect yourself.

How did you get Damascus steel from a bearing race?
He adds other thin steel to the billet at 5min15sec into the video. Not sure what the thinner steel is , he does not mention.
@@HoutmeyersP any other steel would make a different color, bearing steel has many alloying elements that change how it etches
That isn’t Damascus steel, it is pattern welded steel.
Damascus steel is a mono steel with carbides precipitated out of the matrix of the steel in patterns. It’s a specific recipient of steel. You can’t just take random steels, layer them and call them Damascus.
With bearing steel, you are better off not pattern welding. It makes for a pretty blade, but it introduces flaws and weaknesses in the blade. With a Japanese blade shape, that isn’t so bad because they are designed to compensate for that weakness. If he had a mono steel, he could make a thinner and more flexible blade. More like a falchion or a gross messer.
@@ihcterra4625 You could be correct. But these day's if metalsmiths talk about Damascus steel its for sure layers of different steels combined or pattern welded into a solid piece of steel. Perhaps its not what originally was called damascus steel.....but its the common name that is used today for a combination of different steels forged into a blade or object. Search for damascus blade and you will find a few 1000 photo's of pattern welded steel....what you will not find is the steel that you describe as " real damascus".
@@ihcterra4625 lmao no, for hundreds of years, pattern welded steel has been called damascus. Nowadays, we would call it wootz. Pattern welded steel is damascus.
Sounds like you've watched 3 or 4 videos on swords, and now are starting to give lessons, but that's sadly not enough. Pattern welded bearing steel is fine. If the weld is good, it won't have any strength problem compared to a mono steel.
Amazing
